Other than the pup coat which he/she will lose they do not shed. Instead they bring everything from the yard in leaves, rocks grass etc. Have a vacuum and broom ready. If you keep them in full coat which I prefer, brushing is a daily to ever other day to keep the mats out. Not hard, I sit and watch T.V. and Obe lays down and I brush him, he usually goes to sleep. He goes to the groomer on average once a month, sometime every other month. Some people bath more often here on the forum others less. Some keep their dogs short as you can see from photos others leave in full coat year around just depends on your preference. They are work, but would not trade it for the world. Are you looking to adopt or getting a puppy? Which ever please do a lot of research and ask questions. The people here can give a world of advice so please listen as they are very friendly and will help in every way possible. |
How long have you been considering it?
From what little I know they are a great breed. (I adore my buddy) Have you been around them? If not I suggest you try and find somebody in your area who has a full grown one you can play with or maybe see if you can visit a rescue to see what there like? I know most OES lovers would love to help you make an informed choice about getting a dog. I keep Chewy in a short coat in the summer right now it is about 2 in. I brush him once a week and it takes very little time. Along with grooming there are health considerations as well. All of that being said sheepdogs stay in a puppy mind frame til about 3 yrs old. They don't shed much (think poodle) Don't know about other dogs but Chewy can be just as happy sleeping as running full tilt. They do seem to get very hot (Chewy does not like to cuddle long) |
