What do you think of working for free ?

What do you think of working for free ? :?

What do the rest of you think about the big 'W mart' (I don't know if I can say their name) and their self check out system?

I am getting so frustrated with this self check out stuff .
I think if I am going to now have to check myself out I should be entitled to a employee discount since technically I am now the cashier !

I went in today and had to wait on a line of 5 people who have no idea how to check themselves out (and by rights should not have to know how)so I can give them MY MONEY as I work to pay them . Make sense? Does this sound right ? :lmt:

I CAN understand 1 or 2 registers for people in a rush and can scan their few items and pay and leave but when some elderly lady is trying to figure out how to run a register who has a full cart ,I think that is ridiculous. She should not have to do this herself. :(

I checked the store and there was only 2 registers open with actual employees working them and they were both 10 items or less lanes.

I don't understand how we got to the point that we will pay outrageous prices for stuff from a store (any store) that is making us basically work for them for free!

I would like to here other opinions, thanks.

I think it is terrible................Like you said...one or two self check out lines is OK.......but I don't think I will be going to W...for my Christmas gifts.
AMEN!!!! I have very strong feelings about this.....
Where are the old Texaco men- waiting to wash the windows on our cars and the kid that takes out our groceries. ( I have only HEARD about the Texaco Men- not quite that old)

There aren't even window washing "tools" at the self serve gas stations in many cases- and not only does a bagger not take out our groceries... they don't even bag, cause we are doing it.....

Sign of the times I guess. I hate it.
And here I was thinking you were talking about those crazy people that do rescue.

But seriously, where has good ole customer service gone? In our hurry up world we have let this type of thing become the rule instead of the exception.
In places like that, I prefer the self checkouts because the human customer service is usually so bad and so slow that it's more cost and time efficient for me to just do it myself. It's not that I enjoy doing it, but I've faced up to the fact that most of the people working in those joints just don't care and don't try to give customer service and the stores don't push them because the turnover is so high so they take what they can get. WalMart, in my opinion, hands down wins for worst, most incompetent customer service. No matter what location I've gone to, I've manged to be consistently disappointed. The last (and final) time that I went to WalMart, the cashier did not say a word or look at me through the whole transaction. After she scanned everything, she just stood there so I did, too. There was about 15 seconds of silence while she looked everywhere but at me and then muttered the total.

Ridiculous.
Sheesh, I so agree! I went to a coffee shop the other day where they just handed me a paper cup and told me to pour my own, then when I asked where was the pastry I had ordered, directed me to a glass case with tongs to bag my own, THEN I had to ask where was the cream and sugar, and lids....good grief! By then time I was done I felt like asking for my paycheck! :? All of this, with a prominently displayed tip jar on the counter!

The longer I'm in the work force the lower my expectations of other people has become. The majority of people are working for a paycheck not because they have a passion for what they are doing. Most jobs seem so menial to me now and most people work out of necessity.

Just today I stopped at the book store to pick up the latest Dog Fancy magazine with the sheepie on it. I stood there while two kids were ringing up at the register. Another girl came to ring me up and I hear the lady next to me request gift wrapping. The girl literally said, "Um, they didn't train me on that so I can't do it. Do you really want everything wrapped?". I laughed out loud as she made it sound like such an imposition. I guess her parents or other adults didn't train her well either.
I don't mind some of the self check out. Most people don't want to work at as checkers, or as you pointed out idots. I think I know which place Laurel is refering to, and I don't go anymore. I do not mind doing my groceries, but if I want to get my own meal I would either eat at home or go to a cheeper place.
As a teenager, I was the first female to work at a gas station in our city. The guys thought they were funny when they asked me to check the radiator in their VW. I told them if they could find it first, I'd be gad to check it. Underpaid and overworked.
I like bagging the groceries as I do a much better job than they do.
Ours must be an exception. Our retail places are not that bad! Even the Walmart people are friendly.

Did you grab 50 cents? You earned it!
I have a long-standing hatred for WM in general. I don't go to their supercenters at all, but they still get plenty of my money because we go to Sam's (only because there is no Costco here) and at the Neighborhood Market (because there's no other grocery that is nearby - other than the supercenter.)

That said, if I'm at the Neighborhood Market, I'll pick the self-check out every time because generally, I don't want to deal with the employees with whom I've only ever had experiences that describe them as rude at best. I'd rather pay to NOT deal with them.

Generally, I go to Target. If I am not in a hurry I'll make the trip to Super Target - it's just not very close to me.
I am not a fan of Walmart to begin with. I've only been to one maybe 3 times. I make a point to not shop there. People around here think I'm weird because they've grown up with it--and I've grown up avoiding it!

I don't mind the self checkout option in general. I tend to use it, especially when I'm in a hurry and the store is busy and I only have a few items. But once a person has more than 5 or 10 items, and you can't fit all your items in the little bagging area, then you need to wait in line at the regular registers!

We have a grocery store here, which is the 'nice' grocery store, it's family owned and local, but they have tons of stores, so it's not like a little mom and pop type place...anyways, they have a policy of taking your cart out to your car for you. I hate it. It's supposed to be courtesy I guess, but it just makes me uncomfortable, and they always walk SO slow...and I feel like I have to make small talk, but it's either a 90 year old man or a 14 year old boy...I would rather just take my own groceries...
I was in home depot last week and then had NO ONE working the tills just the self help, But we had six of this and that for plumping (over 300$) the computer stops and a cashier has to come and do it. To easy to not to scan. But she also had to run to the other 5 to help others???? Makes ya not want to go at all, for us back to totem.
I drive out of the way here at my parents and go to Target. I dislike the W and Sams place and refuse to give them any money. Parents think I am crazy I wont go there.

The self check out is ok... only if it works and I dont have to wait for someone who has that deer in the head lights look. You know the one how does this work. Here is a clue "push the start here button and scan item."

How about french fries and you have to ask for condiments. Wait this is even better, do you need napkins? No I'll just use my shirt thanks!

Home Depot- Excuse me I am looking for this should be right in here somewhere. Hang on this is not my department. What are kidding me! Then go to your department and stay there.

Sorry needed to vent.
I like self check-out b/c I find so many people who can't stuff items in a bag correctly. Although if a line w/a person is empty, I'll go there first as it's easier on me w/a kid.

It's just nice to have the option of it since the lines are empty or faster there, and sometimes I don't want to wait.
