lethargic or lazy? Whats the difference?

Okay I noticed that most any problem a dog has medically has the symptom of the dog being lethargic. And it is usually one of the first questions out of a vets mouth when addressing an issue. Now I know what this word means:

Lethargic: deficient in alertness or activity;drowsy; sluggish.

Well my dog can be lazy at times (normally he is off the walls) and I have seen him sleep for hours in the middle of the day. He also will get into anything he can.

How do you determine if a dog is lethargic or just tired and moody? Is there a time frame? What if you think you have a problem at night when he should be sleeping in the first place?

An example of this....we thought Chewy might have gotten into something because he seemed a little down (kept trying to lay right next to me - not his norm) and he did not seem to interested in food or play. We noticed this around 6 pm and went on til about 1 am (I called the emergency hospital during this time). Now we let him go through the night because he had not thrown up or anything and the next morning he was right as rain.

Not an expert here, but if it is just an isolated incident, ie--one night seemed "off" but in the morning he's fine.........

maybe he got into something that didn't agree with him in the yard??
Or maybe he picked up a bug?

I would think that if there are more outward signs...vomiting, diarhhea, not drinking at all.... that would cause me concern.

Maybe he was just tired and wanted to "cocoon" with you...

The weather here, in St. Louis has been crazy to say the least...one day chilly...one day sunshine, warm.......next day rain.....cold..........I can't get used to it.........I want to lay around and sleep and connoodle.....
From working at a vet clinic, what I call lethargic is:
- you can tell the pet isnt right, meaning you look at them and they have a sad face and look like they just dont feel well.
- you try to give them a tasty treat and they dont budge
- no tail wags
- usually flat out on their side most of the time and dont move a lot
- and depending on their age you can pretty much judge what they should be acting like and they just arent
- also the owner knows the pet best so if they see them doing this behavior every single day or it isnt a new thing then you could say that the pet my be "lazy" or not.

Personally, my 2 sheepies lay about all day long but I can tell when they arent right or arent themselves. They just act differently and they have the "mom I dont feel good" face about them. That is when I call them lethargic.
