Dodger is only 4 months, and the doctor did say he's a little too young for a definate answer yet, and that we need to keep an eye on things and see what happens in the coming months. I guess what I'm asking is, what do I look for? I know some of you on here have dogs with allergies, what have you done to soothe your pups? I know the questions are a little vague, but basically, if your dog has allergies, what's your story? How did you figure it out and what do you do to help? |

Hi Alison and Dodger,
I have a OES dog at home who had an allergie, he was scratching all day long, as Eukanuba breeders we were able to become a food called sensative skin, this has worked wonders and has stopped this scratching. As far as the colouring is concerned if the pup is licking his legs then the colouring could be coming from saliva. Hugs from all at Tikki-ti-boo www.ticky-ti-boo.de |
He does seem rather young to be having allergies. Could it be contact dermatitis?
Quote: Lesions generally occur on the areas of skin that are sparsely haired and directly exposed to the offending molecules. This often means the back of the paws, abdomen, muzzle, and lips. The affected areas are very red, have small bumps or vesicles (blister-like lesions), and itch. In irritant contact dermatitis ulcers may appear. Source: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm ... icleid=508 You might try to eliminate things in his environment to see if they trigger the itching... maybe start with where he sleeps. Laundry detergents and softeners can also cause problems... even some materials. My sister's dog had a bad reaction to dry, powder-type carpet deodorizer that you sprinkle on... once the carpet was professionally cleaned, her dog's skin cleared up. Quote: Substances, which can cause allergic contact dermatitis include certain antibiotics applied to the skin; metals such as nickel; materials such as rubber or wool; and chemicals such as dyes and carpet deodorizers.
I think we've talked before and we live pretty close? I believe you'll find a solution but if you exhaust all the conventional medical methods and still find no relief for your little guy, you might consider an appointment with Dr. Lynch in Grawn... he's an holistic vet. This past allergy season was the easiest my Darby has had so far... but she has severe seasonal allergies. Best wishes to you and Dodger~ |
Thanks dairymaid and Jaci,
I agree that he's a little young for all of this, and like I said, it's kind of wait and see. I just want to make sure that I know what I'm dealing with when I go to the vet. After growing up with bichons that had curious maladies (licking till there were horrible hot spots in one case, and pancreantitis in another) I'm admittedly a little over protective. I'm not sure if it's the contact dermatitis. It might be, but it's mainly under one ear, his chin (that one has cleared up as of late) and under one armpit. We thought it was mites, but he's been on Revolution for 3 months now, and that should have cleared the mites up. (If that was the problem I guess.) His little sores are just little scabs, maybe like the ulcers they describe on the page. No puss, no blood, just scabs, from the size of the head of a pin to at worst a pencil eraser. I'll have to try and clean his bedding with some natural detergent that I have that was meant for babies. (Why is it that the simplest solution is the one you don't think of?) I don't use that carpet sprinkle stuff, it sends me into allergic fits!! I can only imagine how it might irritate a dog. We did move into this house back in July, so maybe the previous owner used something? The house was spotless when we moved in, but who knows what got it that way. Thanks for the suggestion of the vet. I do live pretty close, in Bellaire. I know that there is another holistic vet up near Petoskey as well. It's something to keep in the back of my mind as we keep trying to figure this out. |
You might try keeping him in a tiled area for a week or so... off the carpets... to see if there's any lessening of the itch. It can be a process of elimination if it's allergies or contact dermatitis.
Quote: I don't use that carpet sprinkle stuff, it sends me into allergic fits!! I can only imagine how it might irritate a dog. The vet diagnosed a serious immune issue and recommended the dog be euthanized. It was during a time when my sister's 4 year old was diagnosed with terminal leukemia and she just couldn't bring herself to have the kids face another heartache so she couldn't do it. It turned out to be the carpet powder (my nephew is 17 now). Quote: I know that there is another holistic vet up near Petoskey as well.
That's good to know there's another holistic vet in northern Michigan! There aren't too many in our neck of the woods. Please keep us posted on how your little one is doing. |
Hi, If you are not sure another reason could be his bedding, if you have a coloured blanket it is possibly too harsh for him, unfortunately washing will not help, best of luck |
