I can not stop weeping.

 My oldest niece's appendix burst a few days ago. They think it might have happened the day before she was taken to the emergency room.

She had not felt well for a few days, but not in that much pain. She went to the doctor the day before she ended up in the emergency room. She thought she had the flu and just could not poop, she has had this problem before. Everyone I know that had this problem talks about how they were in so much that they could not standup. She walked into the hospital. The doctor said the surgery went well, and has said that he is happy with her numbers.

Today after the doctor's visit one of the nurses told her mother that she is in high danger of problems and may never be completely recovered. She talked about infection and organs fusing together, and her body just giving up. They are going to talk to her doctor. We all understand that any procedure is dangerous, but now I can not stop weeping.

I know there are many members who are in the medical field. Is there little hope of ending well?

This is terrible.

I will pray for your niece.
Oh liz I am so sorry to hear what has happened to your niece, stay postive that all will be improving as she recovers.

My mom went through the same thing last year her's burst and straight into the operating theatre, the news was not good. Anyhow after she was still critical, they went back in and found a perferation to the bowel and repaired that and she also had massive infection running through her as well.

Very stressing time it was for our family at the time and the news was not at all good, she was in hospital for a month, hooked up to IV's with massive anitbiotic treatments, being fed through the nasal etc and we thought the worse, she recovered.

So sending prayers for your niece and love to you at this time .

:plead: :ghug:
Sending prayers for your Niece.
SPEAK TO THE DOCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Although in this day and age of HIPPA that might be difficult. But someone needs to talk to the Dr.

A ruptured appendix is certainly a serious problem, which requires a hospitalization that is usually a few days longer than for normal removal. But that is so that the patient can be give IV antibiotics and monitored for infection. Usually it is a good prognosis, and especially in a young healthy person.

SOmething just doesn't sound right about this situation. Either the information has been misunderstood or there is a piece missing to the story. Yes there is hope of this ending well but I think you need to find out exactly what is going on.
My prayers are with your niece Liz and strength to you and your family.
My prayers are with you and your family for your niece's speedy and full recovery.

So sorry to hear of this news. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

I agree--- Good advice.

Hugs and prayers for all!
Your niece is in my prayers, also.
I agree with Ginny, talk to the doctor ASAP. It may be helpful to have more than one person there to catch all the details, when people are upset they often misunderstand things. :ghug:
Ditto Ginny's advice.
A ruptured appendix is a risk, as the bowel matter and infected material all need to be scrupulously cleaned out of the abdominal cavity to prevent further problems. Peritonitis is a risky thing.

Is there a person in your family w/ medical knowledge who can be the one to talk w/ the Drs and relay info to the family? That is usually helpful.

I have a BIL (Todd's next younger brother) who got peritonitis from a leak in his bowels after a kick to the stomach - in tae kwondo class. He was in the army in korea when it happened. It darn near killed him, but he has mostly recovered. Medical care in the military hospital in Seoul was not the best - pretty primitive. He has a 10% disability from the military from it. It happened 23 years ago.

Hugs to you Liz and the rest of the family. Your niece is young and strong - that helps a lot.

:ghug: :hearts:
Liz, I had a ruptured appendix for 4 days before the doctors decided to open me up. That was 30 years ago and I'm still here! I was in the hospital for 10 days on IV antibiotics. As stated, the recovery will be longer but your niece is young and healthy. I will keep her and your family in my prayers.
I'm so sorry!

My younger brother had a situation that sounded similar to your niece's this past spring. He wasn't feeling well, but wasn't in too much pain and started feeling that way early in the work week. Still went to work. Finally on Friday he wasn't able to go to work because he felt so sick. His friend took him to the ER. Burst appendix. They think maybe a day or two before.

They said to be prepared for a long recovery and that infection could happen, but I don't think they ever gave him a potential for not making it. It was a serious situation, but I don't think that was part of it.

Good luck--I hope she heals quickly.
Liz, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers as you face this difficult time. I agree with our most knowledgeable nurses on the forum - talk to the do :ghug: ctor, and now! Please let us know how your niece progresses.
I'm sorry you guys are going through this! :(

Not a fun ordeal, especially right before Christmas. I really hope everything works out and the prognosis comes out healthy and normal! :plead:
Please know that you and your family are in my prayers.
Positive sheepie thoughts go with you.
liz, I'm so sorry :( I'll definitely keep her in my prayers and hope things go for the better. Hang in there and keep us updated. ((((hugs))))
:(

:ghug:

Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
Oh Liz....I thought after talking to you yesterday that she was doing really well! I really hope that when you guys talk to the DR, it will turn out to be a misunderstanding of what the nurse said.

Ms. M is a strong healthy young girl, with attitude to spare....even if it takes a while, she'll kick this things butt

Ill give you a call today....I know the weather/roads suck, but maybe you could come out here and hang with me and the pups? Its hard to weep when sheepies are licking your face.

:ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
I keep hoping for an update :(

Usually news like that comes from the DR not a nurse. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is some kind of miscommunication.
I just spoke to Liz on the phone, and her niece is doing MUCH better! :yay:

Part of it was apparently a miscommunication, but also she is showing lots of improvement this afternoon.
:phew: :phew: :phew: :phew: :phew: :phew: :phew: :phew: :phew:
That is great news.
WHEW!!! Good news!
Great news!
It's like being poisoned...it takes a while to get it out of your system. I have heard it takes a while to recover...but nothing about organs fusing, etc. I am glad she is doing better.
:cheer: She is doing well today. She was awake most of the day, and telling her mother to stop irritating her. That was the sign that it will be ok. Her doctor comes in the evening so we will have to see what he thinks. They did kick a nurse out the room this morning. They told her that the girl was going to throw up and needed a bucket, and the nurse said that she was not going to be sick. Then Monti threw up on the bed. She was a angry young lady. I guess that was bad enough, but then she stood there telling them that most of the time the medication does not make a patient sick. Her parents had to strip the bed while the while the nice lady with bed linen brought more. The nurse that usually works with Monti is very nice, and I suspect has a lot of experience with distrate parents. She is very nice, but firm with everyone. Arre hospitals like weddings, there needs to be one person for everyone to take their anger out on?

Thank you all for support. I guess that yesterday was the first time I gave myself permission to cry about this. Now she is feeling better, she is fair game for teasing again. November is a hard month for my family and makes us a bit jumping. We have four birthdays, but if something horrible is going to happen it will happen in November. I think alot of people that have a time of year that seem harder than other times.
Hope things go well for your niece. :ghug:
Hi Liz,

I'm so glad to hear your neice is doing much better!

This happened to me too at age 17..my apendix ruptured on a 16 hr drive on a Greyhound Bus. I was too shy to tell the driver anything was wrong and it wasn't until I reached my destination did I get rushed to the hospital. Guess that's why I always speak my mind now..learned my lesson! :D

Your neice will need a couple weeks of taking it easy and then be good as new again. As for being grumpy it's understandable ..she's been through a lot and needs to vent.

Hugs to you and your family!
Marianne
Oh Liz,
