Good thoughts needed for Belle

We went to the cardiologist today and she's got myocardial failure and an enlarged heart due to her past poor nutrition. Her heart is functioning at 18% where normal is 30-40%.

There is hope - with the proper nutrition the damage could be reversed, if it isn't too far gone.

I'm a bundle of tears at one minute thinking that I could lose her before I really get to know her and totally optimistic the next.

Dr. Bill said to feed her as much nutritious food as she wants (Kayli would eat the whole bag if I let her, so I find that somewhat amusing) and get her started on vitamins and a couple other things I can't remember. Naturally, I left all the info at my friend's house tonight! She's also being taken off the Lasix (whew - it's a diuretic) and the Benazepril and being put on safe doses of Enalapril and Digoxin.

Belle is the sweetest dog . . . I am so angry because this should not have happened to her. She deserves another chance at a happy life.

ps - Belle just scarfed down FOUR cups of Prairie Chicken & Rice. She's actually gained 10 pounds since I got her three weeks ago.
Oh, Jil! I will keep Belle in my prayers - she's such a beauty. Looks a lot like my Drezzie. It sounds like she's off to a good start if she's gained 10 pounds in the past few weeks. Hopefully her resolve to survive will get stronger every day, as she bonds with you more and more. Keep the faith! Miracles do still happen.

ohh she really is gorgeous, walter and i are thinking of you and belle.

but by the sound of her appetite and your willingness to help her, i really do think that everything will turn out ok!!
I agree with Heather and Chris, you are off to a great start and Belle will be just fine. You have a lot of people and pups here rooting for you both.
She is absolutely beautiful. What type of dog is Kayli? I have never seen one like her before, she is so cute!
You and Belle will be in our thoughts, please keep us updated.

Thanks folks, we can use all the good thoughts. I just divvied up Belle's meds for the next week and I definitely need to get some fig newtons to hide them in! I'm glad the glucosamine/chondrointin is in treat form; it's their bedtime snack.

This morning she only ate 3 cups of food, which seems more reasonable to me; with the horrible arthritis in her left hip, we don't want her to get too chubby!

Her fur is growing out and she's getting to be extremely cute, but she won't let me take decent pictures of her face. She spends a lot of time looking down, which is something I'd like to change, it just seems so sad somehow.

Kayli Marie is a chow mix I adopted from the MHS 10-1/2 years ago. She's my floofy dog and I adore her, now even more than ever. She has been so fantastic with Belle that I can't even begin to describe it, I start to tear up. I was sort of afraid that Kayli would freak at another dog in the house, but there was only the expected alpha-dog incident when they first met and then just a couple minor food disagreements after that. Kayli is a speed walker, but in the last couple weeks, she's been slowing down and actually making me slow down if Belle is tiring. Kayli definitely has the chow genes, she's very protective of me and the house, yet she hasn't had much issue with Belle getting my attention; pouting is the worst it's been. I am SO proud of Kayli that I could just burst.

Chris, I've been thinking about Drezzie every day and I hope you find a good solution to ease her pain. Give her a smooch for me!

Jil,

I can tell how proud you are of Kayli Marie. SHe is so pretty. I have a big heart for chows. My grandparents raised them, when I was very little and playing with those little balls of fur was heaven. Unfortunately, chows have got a bad rap, and I wanted to make sure that I got the right dog for my children.
Thank you for the picture of Kayli. I am glad she is taking good care of Belle. They will be close friends now forever.
Belle will be in my prayers for a fast recovery. I know since she is with you it won't be long.
Best wishes, Stormi and co.
Yeah, Kayli is not great with kids, so I don't blame you for not wanting a chow. We picked her because she was the only dog not barking at the humane society, she was just sitting there, wanting a home. Now she barks at everything/everyone who may threaten her home or me and is teaching Belle to do the same, although Belle isn't at all threatening, just loud. Kayli is great with me but not very many other people, so I have to be careful. It's weird to now have a dog who is super friendly and harmless. In retrospect, my ex & I were probably too afraid of Kayli's potential behavior when meeting new people and passed that along to her. Still, I love her to death and, as I said, am so darned proud of her behavior around Belle.

Belle's doing okay today, no reactions to the meds and is eating around 3 cups of food at a sitting. I love to hear her growl at Kayli when Kayli tries to horn in on her food (after she's inhaled her own, of course). Serves Kayli right - she'd do the same thing! Tomorrow I'll get Belle's vitamins and add them to the regime. If anyone has helpful tricks for giving large pills I'd apprecate them. All I have in the house is cream cheese and that's working well. The cardiologist suggested fig newtons, so I'll get some today.

Off for walkies - I've got the Indy 500 dog and the snail pace dog and I'm starting to lose weight from all the walks. Some are with both dogs at Belle's pace and some are individual. I'm not complaining, although it's pretty icky out there right now - downright cold and windy and a little rainy.

Jil
Norman takes a couple of pills a day and we give them to him with peanut butter. We take a spoonful of peanut butter and just stick the pills right in there. He laps them up without even noticing.
We used to give him pills inside of cheese and cookies but he would eat the good stuff and then stop, look us dead in the face and spit the pill out. The weasel!
Peanut butter works with Drez, too. And she stands there and watches while we put the pills in it, but she just laps it up anyway!

Thanks for the concern for Drez, Jil. She's holding her own right now, and actually getting a bit stronger with the Motrin and chondroitin. I'm hearing more and more about not giving a dog Motrin, but this is what the vet suggested. Will put it on my list of questions to ask him when we get her arthritis profile back.

Sounds like Belle is getting stronger, too. She is so lucky to have found such a good home with you, and with her new big sister, Kayli!

Chris
Ohh Jil,

I am so sorry to hear about Belle. I am sure that if it is possible to make Belle healthy, your and Kayli the floof dog's love and attention will accomplish it.

You are all in Henry's and my prayers--I am sure that when Henry prays for sunny days to play, soft beds to sleep and yummy food whenever he wants it, he means for all puppies not just himself.
Lennon and Sofa wanted to send a get well card but the didn't know how to write in cursive, so they asked me to send their best wishes to Belle on their behalf.

You'll see that soon she'll be as crazy and energetic as an OES can be.
Running and jumping and barking!!!

Okay, there was a puddle in the kitchen but there was some running and jumping and barking when I let the girls outside when I got home from work!

Running and jumping and barking!!!

Jil
Oh Jill! That is so wonderful! Kepp going! It seems like she is doing great- and how could she not, with such a wonderful home!

My parents female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Julianna also has a heart condition, I beleive it is similar to a doggie heart murmur- but she runs around and plays, and has a great life! I beleive that Belle will too!

My best wishes (with Bell Bell and Iris too!)

Karen :)
I continue to pray for Belle! Keep the faith (and that's coming from a Red Sox fan! )

I'm sure Belle will realize that she's in a wonderful FUREVER home and will soon hold her head high!

Kristen
