training

We have been wanting to get Jack and Annabelle into an obedience class, unfortunately it seems we have been hit with one thing or another over the last year that it hasn't worked out. We have heard wonderful things about our kennel club here and have had lots of friend take their dogs through this kennel club for obedience with good results. It is quite a few miles from where we live and haven't gave up on the idea, but it will be a few more months until my husband's shoulder is fully healed.
My next part to this is that we do have a petsmart close to us, I haven't really heard much about the training they do or if it would be close to the same results that we get from a kennel club trainer. Have any of you guys used petsmart in training? I could always start out at petsmart and go to the other place when the kids quit getting sick and my hubby quits having all the surgeries. I have my fingers crossed on both. LOL
I think we have done well in training and socializing them, but there are a few area's that I would like to see improvement on. Walking on leash is one. There are some days they and I look like pro's walking down the street, but there are also some days, they pull and take me for the walk. If someone shows interest in seeing them while on the walk they drag me over and bounce around, I can get them to settle and sit, but it is still frustrating at times. I guess the kind of act like a 4 year old that thinks they should be the center of attention.
For those of you that have went through training what things would you still like to see your sheepie improve on? For those of you that have trained on your own, what areas would you like to see improved on?
Thanks, Stormi and co.

Stormi,

My sister brought her Basset Hound to Petsmart and made out fine. They don't have the space to allow for alot of socialization - but alot of places don't have a "play time" for dogs over 1 anyway - so that may not make a difference in your case.

You can also work on some behaviors on your own - but with two the same age - it is very difficult to concentrate (and have them concentrate) so I would recommend doing one on one training with each of them.

Even with a formal training program - you may still have problems! Sydney went through 3 obedience classes and she still jumps on people she's excited to see. It takes a lot of work and patience - take your time and don't give up!

You should get the book The Dog Listener: Learn How to Communicate with Your Dog for Willing Cooperation, by Jan Fennell- it has some great training tips!

Start at PetsMart, at least you and your dogs will be learning how to...learn. You must practice at home every day. If getting to another site is proving to be too much, ask the PetsMart instructor if they do home visits for more instruction.......or find a private instructor who will come to your home. As long as you are willing to do the "homework," private instruction isn't too expensive. It's only when you sluff it off and don't have the dog(s) properly prepared for each new step does it get expensive.
Well y'all we have just started class at Petsmart...Cassie & I have been to one class(first class was just for uprights)...6 in the class & what a rowdy bunch! It seems to be clicker training & basic obedience... it was great for socialization...sooo many smells & lots of shoppers/audience! It is very low key & Cassie seemed to be attentive & confident...rescues need to shed some baggage sometime. Cassie was the most well behaved & was nominated for Homecoming Queen  OK..OK... We will make the best of it & go on to another if needed!
the only thing i can say is it appears petsmart uses the gentle leader a lot to stop pulling. I like the gentle leader and all (have it for my other dog) but I would rather teach a young dog to simply not pull. i dont know for sure that they use this method exclusively, just that every time i walk by a class they all have one on.
