Hi can you give us a little more info on the surgery on the elbow, was it for OCD or Dysplasia?
Cause could be a multitude of things from muscle, ligaments etc, a soft tissue injury if nothing is showing up on the x-ray. Did the vet manipulate the leg and go over it to see if any sore areas were on the leg? Did your boy flinch or show pain to pressure on certain areas around the leg? It is really hard sometimes, sometimes it can be associated with an entirely different area on the body and because they are weight bearing more on one leg that becomes sore then & they limp. So did the vet go over the entire dog or just concentrate on the front leg? I only mention this as with one of mine and the leg she was limping on, turned out to be another area that was the problem and because of the weight bearing (compensating) on the stronger leg that became sore. my boy derby had double elbow surgery 8 weeks ago he was doing fine until he played not ruff with another dog i am back to square one he is back to limping.. i think he always willlimp after heavy walking ..your vet said the same thing mine did when i took him yesteday they told me to give him rest ...they saw nothing in the xrays |
Hi Lisa, he had an op for ocd in his right elbow, and yes our vet went over him with a fine tooth comb and he said nothing, as he is only 5 years old I want to help him as much as I can. If you have any tips I would be grateful. |
I'm no vet but I would suspect maybe a bit of a soft tissue injury, a pull, sprain, something along those lines.
I would have him totally rested, that is total confinement & rest of him for a week,(crating if you have one) use the lead to take him outside to potty etc then back to total rest and see if it settles down. If it does after a week then a slow build up of lead walking only on a soft surface like grass for 10-15 minutes a day and gradually increase that over another 3-4 weeks. If no signs of limping while doing that and after total and semi rest and building up slowly to normal activities then hopefully it has settled down, repaired the problem and no more limping. Did the vet suggest a course of Anti-Inflammentries to maybe help if he did not suspect anything bone wise after the x-rays? Might be a good idea if not to talk to the vet about something like that to help while he is being confined till it settles down if nothing was found with his x-rays to be causing the problem with limping. My bitch was a partial tear to the cruciate ligament and anti-inflams and total rest and slow build up over a period of 6-7 weeks worked wonders to help. Previously I had a bitch that semi-tore a muscle and same treatment till the soreness went away. So if you suspect that it is a soft tissue problem causing the limp then pretty much a standard type of therapy to get them over it and time for it to settle down then slow build up to normal activities so they don't re-injure themselves. The hardest part is confining them as you don't want them running, sharp turning or overdoing it while the leg is sore and it getting worse. Hope this might help a bit and please keep us posted to how it all goes. Wishing you and your lovely boy all the best and we are keeping fingers crossed the limp will settle right down and he will be back to his normal bouncy self real soon. |
Hi Lisa,
thanks for the tips and believe me I will try it out I will confine him and take him out himself without "Misty" I will talk to my vet about your info on Monday. This is a super site to get useful info from other OES lovers. I visited your Website earlier this evening congratulations it is lovely. Have fun in the girls house, I do not have that problem yet but if my girl has nice pups next year then one will definately stay, keep your fingers crossed for me. Bye for now |
HI Lisa,
I was at another vet with my boy at the weekend and she said she thought he had an infection in the leg. He got an injection and I have tablets to give him, plus I have to cool the leg, today he was much better walking nearly normal, although I will follow your tips as well. Hugs from all at Tikki-ti-boo www.ticky-ti-boo.de |
Good news then someone finally found the cause of the limp. YAY now it can get better. Yes still confine him not too much charging around till the infection and soreness settles right down.
At least it wont be as long now with keeping him quiet while it all settles and the infection clears up. |
hope he gets to felling better soon. |
