Wheaten Terriers

Does anyone on here have any knowledge about Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier rescue, or reputable breeders?

My sister in law is searching for one (she's been researching breeds for several months now, and this is the one she's decided on) and asked me to help. Ideally, she'd love to find an adult, male rescue, but is open to other possibilities.

Because she is up here in Alaska (Fairbanks) I know transport will be a big issue, as well as finding a way to do long-distance home visits etc.

As far as puppies go...do any of you know if there is a WT equivalent of the OESCA breeder referral list?

Thanks! :D I'm very excited about Abby and Bert getting a new cousin!

Just contact the national club for a referral. Every breed club has a list.

Cool! Thanx...thats a great place to start! :D
I'd think they probably know the rescue groups, too, Laurel. So, ask about both while you're at it. :D
I was just helping someone else look for reputable breeders of a few different breeds and found the national club sites very helpful so I had that info ready!
Wheaties are a nice down size from an OES. I know several OES people who downsized and are happy.

That was a big part of her attraction to them  She adores my dogs, but would like something a bit smaller. I must confess...I DID show her some current rescue sheepie photos to weaken her resolve! But her house is very small, and she'd like a dog who could travel with her easily.

Little Denver's pics just about did the trick though....it's probably a good thing he has a new home already lined up!
She might even consider a Polish Lowland Sheepdog. They're little OES-like sweeties, too.

Jill it is funny that you bring up the Polish Lowland Sheepdog. Back when Violet was in obediance class, there was a PLS that was always right next to us. He hated Violet and would growl at her through out the whole session. Each week, I would try not to be next to those people, but sure enough, next thing I knew the class started and guess who was right next to us. Anyway, he was a very snippy dog...really didn't like anyone. lol he was a beautiful dog on the outside, but questionable on the inside. lol

Hmmmm...in spite of Violets bad experience....if I run across a rescue PLS who's able to be flown to Alaska, my SIL my have to arm wrestle ME for him!
Naw, just go with a small OES bitch. MO is 60 lbs and fits well, unless she's trying to push me off the bed!

isnt it amazing that those sweet petite sheepdogs can still HOG sooooo much room....and then give YOU attitude about it??

Panda gives me a nasty look...and i simply have to remind her that it is MY bed.....hmmmpp!
You might want to PM Julie L (Forum name). She just got out of Wheatens and back into OES. She showed them for a few years and may still have some contacts.

I looked into them when searching for a dog, and was turned off after going to one of their forums ...which I stayed at for awhile. :( Just seemed there was a lot of aggression ...of course there's bad breeding but they're so rare (hard as hell to find a breeder compared to an OES), and just didn't get along with other animals like OES' did. I would have liked to meet one in person though! Maybe the impression would have been different.
Wheatens are terriers! They are nice dogs, but are a big departure from OES.

(Speaking as someone who now owns a Norfolk Terrier. As much as I love him, he is definitely a different dog in so many ways other than being small. Terriers are a lot more "dog" if that makes any sense at all.)
Here is the Canadian Club website. The breeder list has several in Alberta and BC, which might be easier to deal with, due to locality....But the dollar might be different!!!

Wheaten's are not found in rescue in Canada very often. The Ontario Wheaten Rescue lady in just north of me....BUT....PM me and I can give you an opnion. I amnot sure if she does rescue for all of Canada or not.

My vet called me last week about one of her clients who is going through a domestic situation and was looking for help re-homing her 18 month old male Wheaten. I went to assess him....What a sweetie-pie! She is still considering her options, though....But I told her NOT to let him go to a shelter...He is to come to my house, if it comes to that..
Here's an extensive wheaten rescue site.

They sure are cute.

There's a lot on Petfinder.
The other day at the dog park we met another OES. I (of course) started to talk to his owner and she told me he was actually her parents dog and she loves bobtails too but she lives in a small apartment so she decided to get a "Mini OES". 8O She is looking for a breeder right now.

I've never heard of them....
I've actually run into many people here in anchorage that have them. I also think they're sooooooooo cute. :hearts:

Ive met a number of them at my outdoor show this summer. Bert has distinct, strongly felt "breed preferences", and wheatens are some of his favorites! His other favorite, is oddly enough, chihuahuas :? 8O

There's a sheepie on petfinders that she is checking into also who is VERY small, named Chester. He's all the way down in Florida, though :( .

You haven't heard of them because there's no such thing! Polish Lowland sheepdogs look like little OES and the Coton de Tulear looks like a super small white OES. But, alas, there is no actual mini OES breed.
Well! This went quickly....Randi (my SIL) called day before yesterday to say her new puppy would be flying in next Thursday! 8O

She found the breeder on the SCWTCA referral list. I hope their list is as trustworthy as the OES one. The breeder did sound good from all the questions they asked her, and all the health testing they said they do. She said that the lady seemed reluctant to sell her a puppy, until she mentioned that her brother and sister in law have OES...then the lady warmed up a lot.

The exciting thing for us is....we get to meet him first, since he has a connecting flight in Anchorage before heading the rest of the way North to Fairbanks. We will pick him up Thurs. night, have him overnight, and then put him on his last flight home Friday morning. :D

Any suggestions on how to make that night as easy on him as possible? The breeder is sending some food with him, and we are not going let our dogs interact with him at all (much too overwhelming, I would think). He'll be 9 weeks old, by the way.
Wow, how exciting! :D
Congrats to your SIL!!
Well we picked the little guy up at the airport last night, had him overnight at our house, then put him on his flight to Fairbanks this morning. *yawn* I slept (loosely speaking  ) downstairs with the pup while Scott stayed up in the bedroom with the Sheepies.

Its a good thing he kept me up all night, because if it weren't for the desperate desire for sleep, I might not have been able to bring myself to put that little cutie on the plane!

19 hours of travel to get here, and he popped out of his crate ready to rock & roll!!!! 8O Wow....if thats a WT tired.....holy moly!

Pictures coming soon....now I have to go set up my show booth for this weekend. :twitch: (I could really use a red-eyed blinking emoticon right now :!: )

Thanks Jill! She should have just said she would get a Polish Lowland so I would have known what she was talking about. :? I don't think Coton de Tulear looks like OES...

OES is such a unique breed! 8)
My husband and I and our two Wheaten Terriers have just relocated to Fairbanks, AK for 7 months. Does anyone have a recommendation for a groomer who works on Wheatens? Thanks!

Hi there! Welcome to Alaska! :D

My inlaws (as per the above posts) have a wheaten, and they do take him in regularly to be groomed, so Ill give them a call and ask who they use.

How are you liking Fairbanks?

Feel free to join the forum by the way...not everyone on here has OES. I could use someone else in AK to whine about the weather with me!
