If you need information about cargo, that is how Heart arrived. I probably still have information in my emails about how to do it, what websites to view etc. PM me and I'll try to find it....
So excited Denver is going to his forever home!!!! Wish I lived in Denver to help you... |
Val,
There is a direct flight to Hartford CT on Frontier Airlines, and they are th cheapest..... and Frontier is FANTASTIC for animals too...... It isn't a bad flight as I just did it with Carmella a couple of months ago. Ali |
Unless he has someone to travel with him, he needs to fly cargo. That means a different cargo plane not just in the cargo compartment of a passenger plane. |
nope he will actually go on the same plane...... they just take them around as cargo........ (done it)...........
Ali |
Even if he doesn't have a person flying with him? good to know! |
Maybe kajochen knows someone in her airline that will be travelling?
Is this soon? Weather will start to be a big issue shortly. |
Yes soon because I want this to be completed before I travel for Thanksgiving. . . |
Since there is someone dropping him off and picking him up... I really( just me) don't see the need to have someone fly with the dog since he's too heavy to travel above cargo anyway. Even if the flight had a sudden delay, etc, etc, etc... that person wouldn't be able to go fetch their dog in cargo. There are people that take care of the animals if something horrible happens.
...and it is better to do it as early as possible as there are usually temperature restrictions (when it's too cold). I had a hard time getting Yuks from Wisconsin due to time of year. We had to wait for a day it was above a certain temp outside. |
I read that Midwest does about 400 dog in cargo flights a month. (Internet Puppy Buying ) but they've gotten good at handling animals. Last on the plane, first off. They don't put them on the standard cargo ramps either in order not to risk the crate knocking off. Their cargo area is also climate controlled, I believe.... |

I am told it would be significantly cheaper. |
Actually, no it is MUCH Cheaper to fly with the dog! The dog is only 100.00 (Frontier just inceased from 80.) You have to find the right tickets. Unfortunately Denver to the East Coast is not so easy...... i went thru this for about 4 months trying to get dogs back tn here! Mostly the Boston/NH/CT area. I don't know why it's so much. l can actually fly to Europe cheaper!
The United Cargo people are the worst. Sorry but true. Just about everyone that shows and ships dogs will tell you the same. I refuse to fly on them with a dog or ship one thru them! Frontier, American, North West (in this order) are my preferences...... Good Luck.......... and give little Denver a hug goodbye from us here..... Val if something happens and he isn't gone b4 I get home next week we'll see what I can do to help get him back if need be. Ali |

If you need to have him driven (I hope not) I can help with a leg in Kansas to Missouri.
He's a doll. I'm so glad he's got a good home! |
Val, I wish I would have known last week. I just left Denver to visit my folks in Ga. I have cousins in Boston and I am going there this weekend. Would have been glad to have taken the little guy with Obe and myself. |
Val, I flew Barney by himself from San Diego to Richmond (via Dallas). I think it was about $100. He went on American. |
Hi Val,
I just got back from Africa and was reading your post. If you are a little bit flexible on the time, I would be willing to fly out and get Denver and have him fly back east with me. PM me with your telephone number and lets see what we can get done. Hope to hear from you. Kathie |
Thanks Kathie! You are so sweet! Actually, I took Denver to the airport this morning. He is flying Delta on a direct flight from here to Boston. It stops in Cincinnati but he doesn't get off the plane -- if all goes as planned. He looked very excited for the adventure.
I can't wait to hear when he lands safe and sound. I am naturally worried about whether he has enough room, whether his collar will get stuck, etc. I didn't think it would be safe to have him in there naked just on the offchance that he gets out I would not want him running around without a collar and tags. I packed a couple of his new favorite toys to keep him company too. Maggie didn't love them as much as he does. |
Oh Val....
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for fostering this guy and for having his hearing checked and providing a wonderful transition for him It must be SO hard to let that bouncy and playful puppy go -- I'm so happy that you have some video of him playing with Maggie. And thank you for sharing him with us. I hope his new owner will join us here and keep us connected with him. |
Oh Val don't worry I am sure he will be fine.
You were a great foster Mommy to Denver and I can just imagine how hard it was to see him go. Just think because of you he now has a brand new start ...... Antoinette |
Awww Ron - such kind words! It was not hard to have him join us for a brief while but it would be overwhelming to care for a puppy and a senior at the same time.
Still, I am so glad to have had this experience and I really have learned something about resilience and the power of a positive attitude from Denver. Although he has some bad habits from his petstore experience, his personality was not scarred at all. He will make friends whereever he goes. I also hope his new owner will keep us updated with pictures and stories as he grows. I was also really pleased at how well both Chumley and Maggie handled it. Maggie was amazing but Chum was too. She was not nurturing or playful like Maggie but she wasn't too mean either. She set her boundaries firmly but then she was fine with having him around, could walk through doorways together, lay on the carpet near each other, etc. I was relieved that she did not bite him. And there was no fighting over any treats. |
Val......................what a wonderful thing you did.......and Denver has a better chance for a happy healthy life because of you..... |
Thanks Val and Antoinette too! And to everyone else that encouraged and supported us through this little adventure. You guys are so nice! |
val....nice job!! |
Woohoo! Val, that was awesome what you did. |
You go Val!!!!!
I hope we hear more about Denver from his new uprights. Ann |
Aww...you did great Val! It's always so hard to see them go. Even though you're excited for them and their new life, you can't help but miss the little buggers when they're gone. |
I was going to recommend Delta. Nigel flew in on Delta with no problems...from Buffalo, NY to Los Angeles, Ca.
If you had his hearing checked ...is he actually deaf. He looked like he might have some hearing in the videos. |
Denver arrived safe and sound, clean and happy in Boston this afternoon! He travelled on Delta without incident. He was picked up by his new family and, per Massachusetts requirements, was taken to a place for quarantine for the next two days. He will be able to go home on Saturday but he can visitors before then. I was told that he was laying in the back seat of the car happily shredding paper towels like a true sheepie boy.
Wendy, yes, in another thread I confirmed that Denver is only deaf in one ear. It is so great that he can hear all the praise and love that's going to keep coming his way. |
YAY Denver!
Ohhhh I am SOOO jealous of his new family! |
That is soooo great Val!!! I am glad he has his new family. He is definately a cutie. |
Val, you are such an amazing person! I have tears in my eyes when I read about Denver leaving you but I'm also glad he found a forever home!
I just can't imagine how you deal with letting a foster dog go... That must be so hard! |
Happy Ending! |
So glad to hear that sweet Denver made it to Boston ok. I also hope we will get updates on him now and then.
You did a good thing Val....as did his new family by opening thier hearts to him. How lucky they are to be owned by that special sheepie boy!! |
Val---
Hopefully, you will be in contact with Denver's new family... and just maybe we will see them as new members on the OES forum so we can see that sweet boy grow up big and strong....... |
OK OK OK, it's been two days since arriving in Boston.
Has Denver escaped prison yet? I can't wait to get an update!! |
I'm looking forward to Denver's update. What a great story, Val! |
I was looking at the NEOESR site, clicked on recent adoption photos.....who was there??
DENVER!!! He looks great, what a wonderful job you did fostering, Val. |
