What's the proper use of those words. For instance is it Hi Everybody or Hi Everyone? Ok, so I'm not afraid to ask dumb questions.... |
|
According to my American Heritage Dictionary, the two words are identical. They are both pronouns and their definitions are (respectively):
Every person; everyone. AND Every person; everybody. |
I think that the difference may just be level of formality. |
I like "Hi Gang" |
I like to think that "everyone" includes my dog.
I like to think it, but it isn't so. |
hehe...when i hear "hi everybody.." it reminds me of the quack doctor on the Simpsons.... |
Boy this goes a looooong ways back, but a fanatical English teacher said it should be "Everyone" because you are talking with a person, not a body. Don't know if she was right, but it sure stuck with me! Wish a lot more of what she said would have. |

But from that line of reasoning, if you're talking to a person (one) than the term becomes kind of oxymoron since everyone implies more than just one. Plus people have bodies.... |
How about just, "yo!" |
I can't believe that the Southerners haven't chimed in with "y'all" yet!!! |
Good point, Mandy. We just avoid the issue all together and say "Hey Y'all" when we come into a room full of people. |
I was waiting for you, Tammy!!!! I was beginning to worry that you'd gotten lost!!! |
Just wanted to say Hey Ya'll. |
OK, here's the problem.
Any southerner knows that "y'all" is singular, and "all y'all" is plural, so when I enter a room, shouldn't I need to say "Hi all y'all"? |
Hmm, my ex-Step MIL was from West Virginia. She used to say Yuns.
As in, "What are yuns doing?" If she was talking about a group of people she'd say, "What are yuns all doing?" |

Well, I think that explains it... |

Every true southerner knows that Y'all is ALWAYS plural. I don't know of anyone in the south who uses Y'all in the singular. I've only ever heard it in movies. |

Au contraire... this comes from my 1st cousin from Alabama. You know, the REAL south. |
