As you all know, Sofa has been with us for some time now, and there's this very strange thing she does... She's always licking stuff! Either you or the furniture, her tongue is most of the time licking something. If you call her, she comes over running, greets you and then she starts licking you. If we are on the dinner table, she licks the table... it's odd. It's not annnoying, because when we ask her to stop doing it she obeys, but it's a very strange thing anyway, and some visitors are not amused by that Also, she's very friendly to men that come to the house, always jumping on them and trying to play non stop... Anybody has any ideas on why she's always licking things? |

licking hands and other stuff can be signs of submissive behavior, as for jumping on men, she may just be looking for mr. right. |
is her water dish usually empty? |
Sometimes they are looking for salt.... |
Harry is that way. Some dogs explore their environment with their mouth....kinda like a 2 year old. Some grow out of it, some don't. You might want to use a little training to stop it. We've gotten the boy to greatly reduce the oral exploration with "that's enough." However, in the middle of the night he comes to the bed edge and give me just one lick then curls up on the floor. To him it's a hello. LOL, he just came up to me here, licked my elbow and curled up beside me. Guess he can read the screen. |

Sydney does the same thing to me in the morning (a few hours before I've gotta get up)! She jumps on the bed because she's too little to reach from the floor - and then jumps off or curls up on the end. I LOVE those kisses! Kristen |
Wow... So many theories, so little time.
I'll go with the submisive behaviour and the oral exploration. Her character is very mellow and she's had an abuse story, so this supports the theories. Her water bowl is usually full, buy she can drink it in one sitting if she's thirsty..... Why would and OES want salt for? These wet kisses stop when you tell her that's enough and I really don't mind, I was curious about why she likes doing that, but I'll admit that sometimes it's not so nice to be suddenly awake because you were dreaming the house was flooding just to find your OES licking your face |
Oh those morning kisses!! Simone is the pack's messenger dog. She uses her kisses (usually after she's licked her privates) to tell me the other dogs need to go pee. Unfortunately she insists on trying to kiss my lips. Amazing how quickly I wake up , but if I'm slow getting up, she tries the lip kisses again. Threat of another pee breath kiss can really get one moving. |
Puppy kisses are the best. I get herded out of bed by cold wet nose nudges when Henry needs to go out at night. Most mornings I am up before the Little Boo who is a sleepy head until I am dressed for our run. I have to wake him up to get moving. Everything in my house, including me, gets good kisses (licks) on a regular basis though. Some people find it gross but I encourage it. |
I just want to say how happy I am to have found this site. Finally people who can understand what I am going thru.
I grew up with a sheepie named Muffin. She was the most gentle loving and licking dog you could ever meet. Naively I thought that was what I was going to get again. We got Katie at 6wks, she is now about 4.5 mths. While she is the most adorable thing on earth I sometimes think she is the devil. From the beginning she has been aggressive. For starters, I think the breeder gave her to us a bit to early but I didn't know any better. Then I think my husband played with her in the beginning like she was the Rottweiler he had wanted. Lots of chase and tug of war that would get her very excited. Then I would come outside and want to play nice lovey dovey games and she would still be in attack mode. It was very frustrating and many tears were shed. She also mouthed and nipped a lot and you really could not spend any time with her. I was going to put her in classes as soon as possible but then thought she might need "special" attention so we got her a trainer that came to our home. Now not having many dogs, seeing this kind of training was upsetting to me at first. The trainer has us use a pinch collar. When she has that thing on though she is a dream dog. She will lie quietly beside me and will obey every command. Take it off and she is back to her barking, pouncing, nipping and growling self. Hopefully spaying and time will bring that to an end. But again only having the one perfect OES in the past I have been so sad thinking what was wrong with mine. But now everyone is describing everything I am going thru and it gives me such renewed optimism to keep working with her. Because, yes one look from her and I forget everything. I email the parents of her littermates and we even play with one in the city and they all say there pups are just fine so again I am glad I am not alone and will be visiting the site many a time in the future http://www.sendpix.com/albums/04101521/cu00s3g4jf/ |
Katie Muffin...I like that name. If that is not the sweetest picture of your pup...Makes me want to kiss that muffin face! |
Beautiful pup... where did you get her? |
Thanks, yes she is the sweetest looking dog. I swear she poses for the photos. We have a lot of really good ones. We got her from a breeder in Saskatchewan Canada. We call her Katie but Muffin was my childhood sheepdog so we named her after her too. She is doing really good lately. It was funny we took her to the park yesterday to see her sister. They brought 2 other dogs and Katie was so submissive to them. It was so sweet. I felt like she was the shy new kid on the block. But i am glad to know she is not aggressive to other dogs. |
