Please keep a watchful eye on the paw pad. My vet friend told me that this kind of injury may take a while to heal and is prone to infection. |
Rags just split her paw pad open last week while running on the concrete (this is what the Vet thought anyhow). We had no clue what happened she was limping and would not let us touch her paw. The limping turned to hopping on three legs. They found the cut after they X-rayed her foot, she was sedated at this point, which she needed to be for them to shave down the pad as she would not let anyone touch it.
The Vet bandaged it for 5 days and a course of anti-biotics. She was as good as new when the bandage came off. The Vet will most likely prescribe a course of anti-biotics. Hope Max is feeling better soon. |
well, I took Max to the vet this morning, so we're waiting to hear what's in store. He basically had no problem just laying on his pillow all night, when we took him out today, he limped and was still leaking blood drops which concerned me a lot. I do believe I read somewhere that the paw pads bleed a lot, I guess I thought that it would stop overnight! I just hope he can continue to rest until he's healed, thank goodness he's not a young puppy anymore . . .

I hope Max gets to feeling better soon. Do dogs get to take any pain medication? |
Poor Max! Not only did he get hurt but he did not get to go to the dog park either. I hope he is better soon. It hurts me just thinking about the injury (Hey, Ron - we need a fainting emoticon for the squeamish!)

when my daytona was young she burn't all her pads she ran around the pool got them wet then in fla heat burnt them .. the next day she had wraps all all 4 pads i felt so guilty it did take a while like 3 weeks for them to heal .. |
Oh, poor Max! I hope he is fine!
When Boni was 9 weeks old, he fell of a 10 foot cliff when we went for a little walk in the woods, that's when my heart stopped beating until he run to me crying. We rushed to the E.R. but they said he was fine, no broken bones, nothing. A week later he cut his paws on broken beer glasses. Then we didn't take him to the vet, as I could clean it out and wrap it. It took him 3-4 weeks to heel but it was a very deep cut. |
Ohhh - I hope he's better soon. That yelp just through to your heart, doesn't it? |
Thank you all so much for your well wishes!! This is one of those things that is just so unexpected and makes you feel so bad. My husband picked Max up from the vet yesterday afternoon, and he's doing quite well. His foot is wrapped good and I believe he has a drain as well. He'll be on antibiotics for 10 days. I have to bring him back in tomorrow for a change of bandage, and on Monday for another change. I'm expecting he'll take at least a few weeks to heal. Even with his foot out of order, Max still has all his spunk in him!! I took him out this morning to go potty and he tried to go on his usual walk, I steered him back home as quickly as I could. We're giving him extra hugs and kisses now. Here's a question for you all, once your dog's pads healed, were they extra sensitive? or do they heal up like new? I hope he'll have no lingering effects.
Have a great day all Sharon and Max |
My boy, Winston, years ago had tore his front foot pad, awful. It was like a flap that peeled back. Same thing, limping, bleeding. He was on anitbiotics and a foot soak with medication 3 times a day.
It healed perfect, like new. Good luck and hugs to both of you! |
