What kind of dog do you have? If it's an OES, are you certain she's pure bred?

OES shouldn't "shed" like many other breeds. They do lose dead hair, similar to the way that you lose dead hair, so that could be what you're seeing. Most people find that the majority of the hair their dog loses is caught up in the coat an needs to be brushed out, though some (lots?) stray hairs collect in corners and places where the dog rubs against furniture.

What kind of food is Dusty eating? Eating welland eating a good food aren't always the same. Do you know if she has any food sensitivities or skin issues? An allergy to something in the food, or a skin problem could lead to excessive hair loss.
Hi Deb,

Welcome to the forum! :D

Puppies DO have one shed -- when they blow their puppy coat. I've never had a puppy, but I thought they blow their coat around 9 months. I'd guess it is just happening a litte early, but I'm sure other members can give you better advice.
Welcome to the forum

My puppy lost his coat in clumps for a while at about the same age. he was going through a coat change and was starting to turn from black to grey.

When I brushed him he lost loads, but he has grown out of it now.

I wouldn't worry about it too much just keep an eye on her and brush her every day!
Hello Craig/Ron!!! 8)
Thank you sooo much for your replies!
I have all the papers with Dusty and is KC registered.
She is eating Burns at the moment, that we changed from Eukanuba a few months ago?? Do you think this could be the problem??
Also - how often is it ok to bath a little puppy??
We bath her every couple of weeks, is this a good thing or a bad thing??

Welcome to the forum Debbie.

I have a 7 month old puppy and he is starting to shed.
As Craig is saying, eating well doesn't mean eating good food.
Here in Quebec, food bought in grocery store is very low in quality.
But in petstore you have a lot of good quality dogfood.

I bath my puppy every 2 weeks and he loves it.
I don't remember much of an increase in hair around the house when Barkley's coat transitioned from puppy to adolescent, just a lot more stuck in his coat, more knots and more brushing. But, yes, OES do go through two coat transitions. 4 months seems a little young for that though.

I assume that KC registered means either American Kennel Club (AKC), The Kennel Club (KC) in England, or some other recognized National Club. That should indicate that Dusty is a pure-bred OES, and eliminates cross-breeding as a potential cause. Breeding could still have an impact though.

I'm not a food expert, and do not recognize the Burns name. Someone else probably does, and knows more about it. Where are you from? We have members in most regions of the world, and Burns could be a regional food that not everyone is familiar with.

When Barkley was young, we bathed him every 7-10 days so that he would get used to it and tolerate bathing (similar to being brushed every day, even though he didn't need it, so he'd get used to that as well). Now he's bathed 2-3 times/year as it's a much more involved process and he doesn't generally get too dirty. As for a good/bad bathing frequency, I think that someone who shows would be best able to answer that question. There are lots of breeders/show people on the board, and I'm sure one of them will speak up.
Hello!!
Vicki - george looks adorable!!!
I wont stop the bathing then - thank you for everyones advice!!
She loves the bath!!
I am from North Wales, and Burns was a food that the puppy class tutor recommended.....???
I feel like an over protective mother!!!
I will keep a good eye on her!!!

Burns is a top brand in the UK and recommended by many people as a good all round food.

We have Uk Sheepie days so you will ahve to bring her to our next one!!
I will look forward for the Sheepie days!!
Keep me posted where and when! Yipeeee!
:P
Hi debJ, just wanted to say welcome to the forum :D

The food should be OK, it is a good brand. We bath our puppy every 2 weeks. Don't forget to put some pics on here :D
HI Debj, I have a puppy from Powys in Mid wales, we are situated on the Wirral, George is nearly 7 months now, he looses quite a bit of hair when he is brushed but it just seems to be the very fine ends of his puppy coat. I am really looking forward to sheepie day too. Last year it was a great success
Thanks Lindy!!
I was worried after reading that most puppies dont shed, but its nice to know that other puppies shed some hair!! She is biting her back legs at the moment though and scratching alot?? I have checked for flees and ticks and cant find anything..I am keeping a good eye on her!
Are the sheepie days held at the same time every year??
Debs
Hi Debs, Kim is 'our leader', she did all the complicated stuff last year like choosing the day and the venue, I suppose we will all try and choose a day that is most convenient for everyone and the location. It will be so much bigger next year! We will keep you posted. :D
Cant wait!! I havent seen any other OES since we had ours!!

I think we may have run into a problem with terminology. Shedding is a process where dogs lose hair and new hair grows in. Strictly speaking, any and every dog with hair will shed.

Most members here use the word "shed" to refer to the regular loss of a significant amount of hair by a dog - be it seasonal as in a Great Pyr, or regular as in a retriever or other short-haired dog.

An OES shouldn't "shed" in this regard. Yes, they do lose hair, and it will collect around the house, often in little tumble-weed like bundles. However, most of the hair they lose gets stuck in the coat and needs to be brushed out. If an OES rubs up against you, you might have a few stray hairs stuck to your pants, but not the coating you'd get from one of the "shedding" breeds. If you're concerned that Dusty is losing more hair than would be considered "normal" (there's really no such thing as normal with this breed, just look around the forum a bit...), you may want to discuss the issue with your breeder or vet. For all the information people on the forum can provide, we don't actually know you or Dusty.
Hi Craig!
Thanks for the advice.
Dusty's hair does collect around the house in little bundles, which never happened a few weeks ago, this had only started recently.
I will monitor how much hair she is losing, and I will take her to the vets if it gets worse.
I might just drop the breeder a quick line!
:D
