jack runs with me for about 2-3 miles a day then we have a fetch (keep away) session in the yard.
it works up to about 3 hours of solid running, then he sleeps pretty well. |
We give Jack and Annabelle a morning and afternoon walk, but they still get spurts of hyperness. In my opinion, they need mental stimulation then. When ours get like that we bring out the favorite treats for some training. It wears out their mind and they sleep like a log at our feet for a few hours. LOL
I also have noticed ours like to just free run and play without any control. We let them in the back yard for about 10 minutes of chase and they come back in and are calm again. Our dogs seem to have split personality. On one hand they are the laziest, calmest dog that I have been around, but they can change in a second to ham it up for us. LOL I wish you well. we take emily on long walks in the am & pm, and play with her when she wants to. she's learned to be layed back like us and when it's time to play. the only time she's every tired is when we get back from the dog park. |
Aren't we supposed to not take pups on long walks/runs until a year old? I thought I read that somewhere here. |
Walks with rests are fine. The puppy will just plop down when it is tired. Seven months....it will be awhile before he gets tired, LOL. Respect his need to rest. Sit with him for awhile. They bounce back pretty fast. I remember carrying home a 4 month old, but after than they could pretty much outwalk me.
At 7 months a little running is fine, less than a hundred yards, return to walk. I like the idea of mental stimulation.....who ever metioned it. While puppy is still too young for agility jumps, he's fine for some games: toys, tunnel, running around poles.......don't forget obedience classes and trials.......sheepies can be very smart. Remember, 7 month is still a young "child." Expect these outbursts, it's part of having a puppy. |
All the excercise you can stand...
When Lennon was 7 months old he could walk 1 mile before getting tired, or run at full speed for about 400 yards. I excercised him with a frisbee and that developed a lot of resistance for him, now he runs really fast to catch if before it hits the ground... But his catching abilities need to improve Short bursts of full speed seem to be what these dogs are made for... 30 or 40 minutes of that and they sleep great at night! Look for signs of tireness or over heating (Very dangerous), such as very heavy panting, laying down and drooling. You know you should not do more excercise when that happens. We live on very hot weather and they are kept full coat (They live inside in the summer, don't worry) so we need to be on the watch for overheating signs. |
I've gone through a similar experience with my 10 month old Ranger. I was extremely frustrated with his hyperactivity(?). But then, I received a bad report from my doctor with regard to my cholesterol and my overall health (I'm 38 ). I've taken the doctor's advice, and have been using Ranger as an excuse for walking a few nights per week. The results have been two-fold, in that I'm feeling better, and to my surprise (or density) Ranger is getting the sufficient exercise he needs and seems more settled. Imagine that!
