I think Nutro is a great dog food. My dogs love it and seem to be very healthy on it. I guess I have been feeding it for about seven years now and never had any trouble with it. But the fact that this puppy mill shop was selling it has really gotten under my skin. It's not just Nutro though. Eukanuba and Science Diet are doing it to. Are there any premium dog foods NOT sold at puppy mill hot spots? I realize that money is thier motivating factor on this but are there ANY companys that won't cave to the pressure of the dollar? |

Yes, there are tons of brands that are not mass marketed. Check out the list at Whole Dog Journal. |
I'm confused, are you saying we shouldn't buy dog food from PetSmart or PetCo and other chain pet supply stores?
Or does this refer only to the pet shops inside the mall? |
I can't think of one dog food manufacturer that would take such a strong political stand as to not market its food in Pet Shops that sell dogs from puppymills. Maybe, Paul Newman would, given his social conscience and strong convictions.
Further, given the number of dogs bred in puppymills in this country, I would be very surprised if any dog food manufacturer would opt not to market its food to owners of dogs bred in puppymills and the puupymills themselves. |

Okay good, because otherwise I wouldn't know where to get our dog supplies! PetSmart and PetCo sell rabbits and fish and stuff, but I don't think they have too many cats and dogs. And when they do, aren't they usually in conjunction with a rescue organization?
I just want to make sure not all animal stores are bad! |
Pet Smart does not sell puppies or kittens, they only sell fish, birds and rodents. Our local PS often has SPCA days, where our local shelter brings in animals available for adoption. They also frequently have cats from the shelter on site in the hope of finding homes. |

Or does this refer only to the pet shops inside the mall? Oh no. I work for Petsmart and I think that they are basically a good company. They don't sell pets that are overpopulated, instead they do donate space to the homeless animal shelters. That is where I normally buy my dog food. I'm saying I feel like some of these larger pet food companys are basically promoting the puppy mills stores (mall shops). |
That is really sad... those mall pet shops, I mean. And I bet they get a lot of traffic too. I remember going to the mall around 13 or 14 with my friends, and we would always make a stop in the pet store. |
Veterinary Diets (various brand names) are available only at vet offices and are not sold at any pet stores/chains/etc. or any store that sells animals. They're also generally a better quality food than pet-store varieties. |
