We have (currently): An overflowing toy "basket" (actually Bert's outgrown bed) in a corner of the living room. A huge chaotic canvas bag filled with leashes, collars, brushes & combs, nail clippers, scissors, poo bags, tie-outs, and other misc. stuff. A medical bag filled with emergency items, meds, etc. Lots of shampoos, powders, ear wash, etc, etc, in our bathroom cupboard. A dog "travel" bag with misc stuff for the road. Dog backpacks, sweaters, booties, jackets etc, that tend to wind up in MY clothes closet. There has GOT to be a better system! I can never seem to find what I need without emptying and sorting through every one of the above mentioned areas, since stuff gets put away fairly randomly half the time. Help?? Im on a "organize my life better" kick... |

My "system" sounds amazingly just like yours.......... |
I keep the leashes by the front door. Then hubby always moves them to the garage when he spots them. Then I have a hard time finding them.
No toys because Rags has eaten them.... One rubber chicken hidden behind the couch for Pepsi. Brushes and nail clippers goes in storage compartment we have in the couch..... for easy access when they dogs are drowsy. The Andis Clippers, ear powder, shampoo ....ointments etc go into the linen closet with our medical supplies. As of right now Lacey is the only one with clothes. She doesn't have much so I keep them in my night table. |
I know the feeling! Last year- after Max was hurt we HAD to get organized. Meds, Diapers, Diaper belts, plastic pads... Oh the mess.
So-- we had Dad build a cupboard much like wardrobe, for the mud room. One side is open ( where you would hang coats etc) and we have large hooks holding leashes and such. This side also holds Max's "wardrobe". The other side has shelves, and I have baskets labeled for things such as brushes, poo bags, shampoos... Things like diapers, blankets, food and treats are in the bottom on larger shelves and two drawers. I have a travel bag packed and sitting on a shelf. When we get home I fill it again for next time. Things like Vet's numbers etc are in the bag in an old wallet, along with emergency contact numbers for Max's care ( you never know ) if anything were to happen to John and I. Dad made Skyler a toy box last Christmas- and Max got one too... it is like a wood crate- with his name that sits in the corner of the den. More than anything, I have learned to DISCIPLINE myself. I would lay things here and there in the basement or garage and was always looking. It works for me to have shelves and such in one area- and I try to keep it as tidy as possible. We too are trying to simplify, and I am trying to tackle the Max's mess issue with "A place for everything- and everything in it's place" |
My method is like Lori's. I have some cheap melamine cubby cases that I have filled with inexpensive fabric bins. I have each section labelled -- grooming supplies, medications, cleanup bags, raincoats, etc. I have this all stored in my basement. It is not particularly convenient but it keeps my house tidy. I have just the meds Chummie is currently using on a shelf in my pantry near their dog food. I keep a jar on the counter for treats. I keep the leashes on hooks in the mudroom. And I have one bin each upstairs and downstairs where I collect stray toys and bones. |
I would love a mud room, that sounds really useful! |
Lori's solution is what I'm working towards; however we aren't there yet. I have a large 2 door cabinet I store dog towels and blankets. I had hoped to put their grooming supplies like clippers in there too, but too many towels and blankies, hmmmm. So they are in a smaller cabinet on the other side of the room.
The leashes are hanging from a peg tree in the vestibule between the kitchen and garage. We grab a leash as we head outside. Daily grooming suppies, combs and brushes, are in the living room (in a nice box) where I can grab and dog and brush at night and get in a few swipes. Toys are passe here now, none have any interest in them. |
I'm a very organized person, and I totally don't see a problem w/your present situation.
I've got the same thing. Basically 2 green baskets with dog clothes and the other with brushes. A section in my cabinet for medical stuff and hair sprays. A toy box. And a big canvas bag of stuff that doesn't fit or that we don't use often above the front door cabinet. |
I think a better question to ask is where do we keep the human stuff? |

OR Takes so much to organize ALL of the family John's junk is much harder to keep in order that Max's. |
Hey, good question! I just bought Nanny a toybox last weekend. And she has a drawer in the kitchen full of random stuff. Doesn't sound like we've acquired as much as you guys yet. Maybe they should have their own room? |

Actually....the thing that has changed in our house recently, and spurred the whole "organize" binge, is that my assistant Nate has moved out of our home and into a new condo with his partner. He's lived here for over 10 years, and now we have a whole extra ROOM to figure out what to do with! I'm voting for turning it into a giant walk in closet. including a storage unit for all the doggie stuff. Part of the problem is I'm a leash, collar and doggie-jacket addict... My dogs have more clothes and accessories than many people. |
GASP! No more Angry Nate? How will the two of you survive the privacy? |
YAY for Nate!!! Must be so weird to not have him there |
I have everything where I use it most. The most often used leashes & collars are on hooks by the back door (in the laundry room) along with their rain coats & boots. The grooming table and bag (with brushes, combs, sprays, ear cleaning solution & cotton wipes, etc) are in the laundry room, too, making it convenient to carry out to the back porch when we groom.
Their meds are in a drawer in the kitchen. The basket of toys is near the front door so Beau can grab a toy to greet me when I come home. Their towels & shampoos are in the bathroom I use for their baths. Their crates, blankets, hair dryer & extra "stuff" are all in their room. I use the third bedroom just for them, closet & everything. There is a storage bin with the drawers labeled for their backpacks, bandanas, extra leashes, collars, Beau's baby stuff, diapers, extra coats, etc. They sort of take up the whole house. But, it's relatively organized. |

Its sorta weird....but, he does still work here, so I see him almost every day. It does feel a bit like an "empty nest" though....at one time we had 6 people living here...Myself, Scott, Nate, my 2 nieces, and a second employee named Jace. Now....just Scott & I and the pups. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. |
