Try using a comb instead of the brush to keep the mats out, also to remove those that appear. |
I use a slicker on the paws, opposed to just a pin brush and that seems to work well, too. |

I do the same, slicker and or comb. |
I have been using the comb on his paws, the trouble is between his toes. What is the best way to trim that fur that it doesnt mat and do any of you trim the fur on the feet and leave the rest of your puppy long?? I know it sounds strange but these matts are huge. |
We also have paw grooming problems. Mine just hates his feet touched - especially the front. back is semi - okay.
For mats, maybe you can spray first with a detangler before combing out? I find water to be the biggest problem. Walking on the grass, walking in the rain, etc. I'm looking for answers myself! |
Are you trimming the hair on the underside of his pads? If not, that should help. You can also trim the hair around the paws so it doesn't reach past the ground. You have to have matt-free hair to start, though. After it is matt-free you hold most of his hair around his paw up, then take a small-tooth comb and brush out the lowest layer around his paw. You take scissors and circle the paw - trimming it away from the ground. Then you let down another layer and repeat. I'm not sure if that helps - it takes a lot of time and practice before you get the hang of it - and I'm still in the practice round!
This is a trimming shot taken from Maxmm's photo gallery - there are others with it: |

If it is the fur between the toes that is matting just cut it out. I do that with Izzie. You can always cut a tiny bit at a time to make sure it doesn't look weird. The best thing we have found for small area combing is a cheap comb from Target...I will see if I can find a picture. It is the kind where the teeth start wider apart at one end and get closer and closer towards the other end. |
