grooming. I have found a lot of helpful information on this site, but not a lot on grooming for a show. I wil be showing Phoebe in February and have no idea how I should be grooming. Do I need to wait until she is a certain age to start grooming for show or do I need to start this now? Being that she has a puppy coat I am unsure of what I should be doing. My groomer doesn't know how to be grooming for show either. I would really appreciate any help and advice that I can get. Also, the bum trimming has me stumped. Is there anywhere I can get specific info on how to do this. Phoebe will be 10 months old when I show her and was wondering what the judges will expect regarding to grooming. |

The first thing I would recommend is to ask your breeder (if your breeder shows). If your breeder can't help you, look for OES at a show and ask 'their person' if they can show you how to get started.
The basics of show grooming begin with regular line grooming. There are a couple photo pages through this site that explain the basics of line grooming, which is brushing the coat in lines all the way to the skin. After line grooming show grooming begins. As a baby there is less to it. I'm on my first OES being shown as well and it starts off fairly simple. As the coat grows up, the grooming does, too! Show grooming involves trimming around the paws, ears, and butt as well as a bit of specific backbrushing just to start. You can look at pictures and videos for ages and still not learn what really happens until you watch somone else do it with/for you. I am learning from those around me. Everyone has specific tips and tools of the trade - and a lot of secret supplies. A really good piece of advice someone gave me is to find a pic of a groomed out show OES that you really like the look of. Once you have the pic, you an begin learning how to transfer this to your own OES as you learn. GOOD LUCK and don't forget to get that mentor. This person will give you enormous advice on everything show. Including brands of brushes, brands of scissors, tips about judges, etc. It's fun! |
Welcome
Definitely ask your breeder to help you out, or find a good mentor who is experienced and willing to help someone new to showing oes.... Best of luck! |
Ditto the above advise. |
Yes you definately need your breeder or mentor to help out and teach you Show Coat presentation & trimming Just too hard to explain, you really need to be shown.
Great idea too, to have a photo of a dog all showed trimmed and presented stacked in the ring as a guide to give you an idea to how the look is you are trying to achieve as the dog matures. At the top of this section of the forum is a Photo essay on line grooming an OES, have a look through that and start that style of grooming now with your youngster so as she matures and her coat gets thicker and longer she will be in a good grooming routine then for when she developes a bigger show coat that requires more work. Best wishes with your little soon to be show girl. Do you have any training facility in your area that has show handling classes? Good idea if there is to get her started at something like that to help before she does go to her first show. Helps you and her get use to what is required in the ring and helps socialise them to other dogs and learning to behave before you start showing them |
