Dog Borstal

In the Uk we have a show called dog borstal where people take their dogs which they appear to have lost control of and work with trainers to train themselves and their dogs.

Last night there was an American bulldog which wouldn't allow it's owner to go out of the house!! :? it ruled the house and was very aggressive.

The dog wouldn't allow the vet to examine him and bit the trainer 5 minutes after meeting her.

The owner was afraid of the dog and gave into the demands of the dog every time!

After the training was finished the bulldog was better but still very aggressive and the owner was left with 3 choices:
1 - to rehome the dog with someone who could cope with him.

2- to try and cope with the dog, muzzling him at all times and never ever leaving him alone in the house with the kids!

3 - to have him destroyed

The owner decided to try and rehome the dog, however the rescue organisations (even American Bulldogs) said this was just passsing the problem on and there was really no hope for the dog.

So the dog was destroyed before he could hurt anyone.

It was sad to think that dogs have to be put down because as humans we damage them beyond repair!

That's so tragic. If only the dog would have been handled properly from the time he was a pup.
We have a Bulldog in our Saturday training class. He's a good boy with small dogs and people. Large dogs send him into barking, snapping, and lunging fits. The dog is handled by a 10 year old boy who's parents drop him off to take care of training on his own since it's "his dog". The boy tries very hard to follow instruction, but you can see the dog doesn't accept the boy as leader.
This past Saturday, Grandma showed up with the boy. I talked to her while Ellie was assigned to sit stay, thinking she might care since she bothered to show up for a lesson. Seems she only wanted to see how the child was incapable of handling the dog so she would have ammunition to support having the dog put down.
I suggested private lessons with an adult, but it seems the family would be way to busy to accommodate that. She also mentioned putting the dog down within earshot of the child. The look on his face broke my heart (I wanted to growl and bite the grandmother, but thought I'd set a bad example for Ellie  )
I left the conversation suggesting she contact a Bulldog rescue to have the dogs behavior evaluated before summarily dispatching him to the bridge.
Some people, sheesh......
How sad.......................for both of the dogs mentioned.
