The vet and I racked our brains trying to figure out the cause. She eats Innova, I carefully regulate any treats she gets, she has not been exposed to any toxins like antifreeze, poisons, medications, trash or anything. The vet did give me a flyer from the FDA warning consumers about adverse reaction to chicken jerky treats. I do give those treats because according to the label the ingredient is 100% chicken breast, no additives, no preservatives, no artificial coloring. Now I wonder if I poisoned my dog. Bella ate them, too, but has not shown any ill effects. If you go to www.fda.gov/cvm you can view the alert. Please send my JoJo girl good thoughts and prayers...she is only 6 1/2 and the sweetest girl......she is congenitally deaf and the vet also said she may have other congenital issues that may be related to this incident that have not surfaced until now. I just want her well and home. Mary |

You are in our thoughts- and lots of prayers are coming your way! |
I hope your sweet JoJo pulls through. I think it is natural to look for what we did to cause their illness but most often dogs get sick and it is no one's fault. I am glad to know about the warning on chicken jerky since that is a favorite at our house. Please let us know when you find out more about your dear JoJo's condition. I am rooting for her. . . |
My prayers and best wishes are with JoJo. It is never easy when our babies get ill.

Poor JoJo! I'm praying your sweet girl will recovery fully and quickly. |

Thank all of you soooo much for your support! I visited her today and spoke with the vet. Her kidney levels have returned to normal.... She still won't eat, but that may be because she is not home, so I am going back in about an hour with some boiled chicken and rice to see if she will eat for me. If she does and her levels continue to stay normal, I can take her home tomorrow!
I am now more than ever convinced that the chicken jerky treats may have been the cause. The vet at the 24 hour clinic told me there have been other incidents involving the treats. They claim they are just 100% chicken with no preservitives, additives or artificial coloring, but they are made in China. I could just kick myself because I normally don't give them anything not made in the US, but when I saw the ingredients I didn't even look for where they were made. Last night I checked the container and sure enough....made in China. I will ask my vet about having Bella tested as well. I will never, ever again give them anything not made in the US. It breaks my heart to think I did this to her..... Anyway, she is now driving the clinic crazy barking and trying to chew her IV out, so it seems she is on the mend. I'm off to go back and try to get her to eat for me.... Thank you all again for all your love and support! Mary |
Yay Jojo! I am so relieved. . . |
I'm so glad! I wonder if you can have the food that's left tested? |
Eat Up Jojo so you can be home soon. Thanks for the update too, such a relief to hear she is on the mend. |
Oh thank goodness!!
That is fabulous news. If you want to get email updates on pet food recalls and other pet alerts, you can sign up here- http://www.itchmo.com/itchmos-pet-safet ... mail-list/ . I had signed up during the pet food recall earlier this year and found info was often received before FDA updates were posted. |
That is great news to hear. Hope she gets to home soon. |
So glad to hear she's doing better! |
That a girl JoJo! Keep getting better Mommy wants you HOME! More prayers and positive thoughts your way! |
Thank God...I lost my Winston at 4 1/2 to the poison from China. I was really scared for you until I saw that her kidney function was normal. I suggest making your own treats. I cut hot dogs really thin and nuke them until crispy...Nigel loves em. |
YAY, Great news!! |
Hi, I'm reading this late I'm so glad she's ok. |
That is very good news. I hope she ate all her food and gets to come home tomorrow. |

Me too , I am sooooooo happy JoJo is getting better !!!!! Antoinette |
Is JoJo home yet? Did she eat for you at the vets?
Thinking of your special girl. |
Hi,
Ever since I've read your post , you and JoJo have been in my thoughts constantly. Just wanted to let you know and praying she makes a full recovery. Marianne |
I have been out-of-town and just reading this thread. So glad JoJo is doing better!!! What a Scare!!!
For our furr-babies, I prefer to go natural. but with all the problems this year on things from China, I am all for banning any food products, toys, whatever from China. However, that said the fact is the products could have "parts" from China that are not listed and could be assembled elsewhere. Keeps everyone on their toes, but certainly worth it. Continued prayers and hugs for JoJo. For Mary too. |
Glad to hear Jo Jo is doing better. Do you think it was the chicken treats? So scary. |
Update on JoJo....I don't think we're out of the woods yet. I was able to bring her home last Saturday and she seemed really good and VERY happy to be out of the hospital! She played with Bella, ate well. Went to the dog park and ate up all the attention.
Then, Wednesday evening she only ate some of her good. Thurday she would not eat at all. Friday morning she refused her food again. I scrambled some eggs and made some rice (at 5:15am!) to try to tempt her...she wouldn't have anything to do with it. So.....took the day off work, took her in for an ultrasound. The ultrasound was normal except her adrenal glands, while technically within normal limits, are small for a large dog. Back to the vet for a test for Addison's disease and another kidney panel. She threw up bile between vet visits. Her kidney panel came back normal (thank god!) and we won't know about the Addison's test until next week. I made her some very lean hamburger and rice and she ate. Today she ate her regular dog food and is playing with Bella. I am beside myself worrying. $2500.00 later I still don't know what is wrong with her. She's on Pepcid AC. My vet won't give up, bless her. She is concerned that since she has congenital deafness that she may have other congenital issues. She is only 6 1/2. Please send her good thoughts....I just want to know what's going on with her. |
Addison's disease would be a wonderful diagnosis as a little bit of steroids will be a quick and inexpensive cure. Has it been ruled out yet? |
We don't have the results of the Addison's test yet. She was tested yesterday and it takes about 3 business days to get the results. But, you are right, I am hoping it is something like that because I know with medication she can be treated successfully. |
I will keep your family and Jojo in my prayers. I also hope it's something simple like Addisons. |
I am at my wit's end. All of JoJo's test have come back negative. She does not have Addison's disease or Valley fever or any other definitive diagnosis. Her last kidney values were within normal range but her urine concentration is low, indicating her kidneys are not working normally. She hardly eats. I am cooking her lean hamburger and rice, she is not interested. Last night she was hungry. I hand fed her some Wellness Lamb kibble. She ate one at a time about 4 ounces. This morning she would not eat. Tonight I cooked her some lean chicken breast with some white rice and a little canned pumpkin. She was so hungry she ate it, but an hour later she threw it all up. She is losing weight. We go to the vet again first thing in the morning. She wants attention and is loving massages and brushing. I'm afraid she is starving but can't seem to eat. I give her a Pepcid AC daily per the vet. I need answers but am not getting them. My vet is not optimistic at this point. She is talking about "supportive therapy", I'll know what that means more tomorrow when I take her in. I am so afraid for her. She is only 6 1/2, too young for this! Please send her good thoughts.
Mary |
I am so sorry for what you are going through.
I hope there is something the Vet can do. Big to you and JoJo |
I am so sorry you're going through this.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you! Quote: We go to the vet again first thing in the morning. She wants attention and is loving massages and brushing. Is there a specialist that can look at the test results? Maybe something is being missed? If I'm understanding correctly the vet is stumped can you possibly go elsewhere? Sounds like you are doing so much for her as the mom and you deserve all the help you can get. I'm just thinking back to all the different vets Val had to consult to get help for Chummie. If it's at all feasible to consult an additional vet. Please keep us posted! Give JoJo a big from us. |
Quote: Her last kidney values were within normal range but her urine concentration is low, indicating her kidneys are not working normally.
Are the levels of toxins in her system normal then... she's not uremic? I don't know if Diabetes Insipidus (not mellitus) can cause loss of appetite/vomiting but it does cause the urine to have a low specific gravity and to be dilute. But the dog drinks large quantities of water and urinates a lot. All this can also be signs of kidney failure. If a dog has kidney problems, do they recommend you lower the phosphorus in the diet? Has the vet recommended a special diet to see if this will help her? Several small meals might be easier on her and allow her to keep the food down. I hope your sweet JoJo will feel better soon. |
I am so sorry that JoJo and you are going through this. Maybe another Vet's opinion is what you need. Positive thoughts and prayers are going your way. |
I'm sorry to hear that things are not improving. I know when my cat did not eat after vomiting for days, the vet had to put a feeding tube in his neck to force feed. Not sure if it is the same for dogs, but the surgery is pretty simple. I would also hope they would also try to find a cause why she is still getting sick. Poor girl, sending healing thoughts your way. |
I am so sorry , I hope you find answers soon. |
I hope you find answers soon so you can get her all fixed up... |
How sad and terribly frustrating for you not to be able to find answers to help your girl. I do hope your vet can recommend a specialist for you.
Poor baby. |
I'm so sorry you aren't getting the answers that you're looking for. Do you trust your vet a lot? Even if you do, at this point, I'd definitely look into getting a second opinion. If your vet isn't helping you in terms of specialist, let us know where you're at and how far you can travel and I know we can all put our heads together and ask around to get you someone good to go to. |
I am so sorry about JoJo. We were hoping to hear better news.
Has your vet ruled out the issue with the chicken jerky treats? We are sending hugs your way. Laurie and Oscar (who sends deaf sheepie love to JoJo) |
So sorry! Was hoping for a better report for JoJo. I am thinking also, it may be time for a second opinion.
Many sheepie hugs for JoJo. Know this is terribly difficult for you too...people hugs and sheepie hugs for you. |
