Being in the Desert, we have a lot of flies here. (YUCK!! But I guess it's better than mosquitos. Rags has recently earned the nickname Venus, as in the fly trap plant.... and Miss Miyogi. She will sit there, follow the fly around with her eyes and head, then SNAP! She catches them everytime she really focuses. Hubby said she must have acquired the talent Harley (Our GSD at the Bridge) had for catching bugs. I said, "Yeah, but Harley was an idiot...because he caught Bees. I honestly have no idea if he was ever stung. Everytime he was out in the pool area he was always munching away on Bees. I don't think that boy was right in the head. Also, I don't think Harley ever focused. He would just chomp the air and hope to catch something. When Rags does it, it is a try art form. And obviously, no stingers involved. |

Years ago we had an outdoor cat named, Garfield. One day he came in and was very dopey-like. Like he was drugged or going into a coma. We rushed him to the vet, who couldn't find anything wrong with him. They kept him there almost a week, and little by little he "came back." Three of four years after that, the same thing happened. Again we rushed him to the vet. But this time, they found a bee sting on his nose. He was going into shock, because apparently he was allergic to bee stings! After that, the vet decided the first time around, he must have eaten the bee and gotten stung internally! We had to keep an injection around the house in case he got stung again. PS: Darling Garfield lived to 19 years old and never got stung by a bee again! |
would love to see a photo of Rags fly fishing |
I need to borrow your dog we have a fly we can not get rig of we can him a name "shoe" forrrrrr shoe fly do not bother me. |
That is so funny E. I have watched China do the same thing when flies go by. China has great eyes and amazes me as I watch her catch flies. Pearl hunts for lizards and anything else she can get her paws on, so a lot of hunting goes on in our suburban backyard.
Good hunting Rags! |
I hear a lot of teeth bashing, but don't think any of mine have ever caught a fly. I know Stella caught a bee........she came crying to us all the way from the beehive. Never went back there again...
Congrats on your self feeder. |
THis reminds me of cheyenne and our beloved shasta. THey are the great bee hunters of PA! When cheyenne was a puppy, a bee once got the better of her. She came in the house with her face so swollen, her head looked like a football. She still catches bees, it's a riot to watch how she does it, but she never gets stung.
Beauford on the other hand hates bees with a passion. I think he hates the noise because as soon as he hears one, he takes off running never looking back. |

I guess it explains why Rags gets so nasty when her hair grows over her eyes. It impedes on her hunting abilities.
She also thinks that everything I accidentally drop on the floor is food and pounces, sometimes on the dog standing closest to me because she thinks they are getting some goodie and she is missing out. So her eye hair will remain short. BANDAA wrote: Pepsi's Mommy wrote: Everytime he was out in the pool area he was always munching away on Bees. I don't think that boy was right in the head. TOOOOOO Funny...... Antoinette Seriously though.... Harley was an awesome dog, but dumb as a stump. Hubby and I used to watch him do his little weird things he did and just shake our heads and laugh. One of his weird things was that he could not back up, but he made the tightest circles I have ever seen for a 102 lb dog. I do think this may have stemmed from puppyhood, when I was told he backed up and fell off a 10-15 ft retaining wall. (We didn't rescue him until he was 1 year and 1/2.) We miss our dopey guy. |
