We do - we upgraded to DVR with our dish. We have been with Dish Network for about 10 years. We have had the DVR for over a year. I love it. I will never go back.
I use the "rewind" feature all the time. Works good if you want to re listen to somethig, or if you are watching the news and want to review something. Good for movies too, because you can hit the pause button, and then resume playing when you are ready. Sometimes I turn on a show, then get busy. Then I go back and start it from the beginning and fast forward over all the commercials. I can watch an hour show in 40 minutes! I find myself wanting to do it with other people's TV's - and they can't. It also records shows digitally. Nice feature. I think we pay an extra $5 per month as a rental - we used to own the other box. |
I have two Tivo's. Since they are Tivo's they are not through the cable company. One has a lifetime subscription and the other one is a monthly fee. Because it is the second Tivo on the account it is a reduced monthly fee. |

We do. It's fabulous. When we moved over the summer to our temporary apartment we decided to go bare bones and not get the DVR package and we MISSED it so MUCH!
It's great. You can record things to watch at a later time. If you have a tv show that you always watch you can program it to record that entire series automatically. You can pause a live tv show. You can rewind a live tv show. You can record one thing and at the same time watch a different show (I don't think you can rewind/pause, etc when you are recording and watching something else at the same time, though). I think it's about $5 a month through our cable company. |
I have the TiVO through DirecTV and I love it. I got it about two years ago and am completely enamored with it. I watch all the shows I want whenever it's convenient for me. I think it's like $5 per month. |
So as I see it if you don't use the cables DVR and buy your own there is still a fee from cable? |
Yes, it won't work without cable or satellite service - one or the other. |
but do you have to have a box from the cable comp.? |
I couldn't live without my DVR! LOL (okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration...) But how else could I post about Kid Nation and America's Next Top Model??
Yes, you get the DVR box from the cable company. We have Time Warner, and they brought the box out and installed it. The fees aren't too much. I think for about $65 a month, we get basic cable, DVR, and our cable internet. Every time the rates go up, Jason calls and says we just got a promotional offer from another company and we're going to switch unless they lower it. LOL It works, because they always put us back to a 12 month promotional monthly rate. DVR is sooo awesome! You can rewind live tv up to 45 minutes. You can record 1 show while you watch something else. And the best part is, if you start watching a show about 20 minutes into it, you can fast forward through all the commercials! I don't have time for commercials.... too many shows to watch! |

Yes, you do. You don't have to buy the DVR unit from the cable company, but you do have to have their service for it to operate. So, you still need their tuner box. If you do get DVR through the cable company, you will only need one box - they have combined their unit with the DVR. |

Ours is from a dish, and the unit is all combined into one box too. |

If you subscribe to channels that require a box, then you still need a box...which may be combined with the dvr. If you just have basic then you only need the dvr box. Unless that is only a midwest thing....being able to have basic cable without a box. My second tivo is hooked up to the cable straight from the wall. |
No, that's a valid point, Amanda. You're right. I guess I just assumed that everyone has more than basic.
I didn't think the service for DVR would be offered with basic cable, so that's news to me. |
We only have basic cable and we have DVR, so it's definitely possible! (Thank goodness!! ) |

I didn't think the service for DVR would be offered with basic cable, so that's news to me. I would think most people have more than basic too. I actually have tivo...so it isn't related to the cable company. Maybe you have to have more than basic to get a dvr box. |

Ron wrote: Amanda P wrote: I would think most people have more than basic too. I have nothing but snowy over-the-air TV.Being a TV addict I assume everyone else is too I think we had over the air tv when I was really little I like cable and extended cable for things like BBCA, HBO and SCIFI. |
I like Discovery and TLC and CSPAN I & II and some of the others. I liked Myth Busters which was just getting started (I think) as my cable addiction was conquered.
I haven't had cable TV since November, 2002 now.... so that's what (5 years=60 months * $50) $3,000 after taxes? Seems like a lot to me. |
I have DVR through my cable company, Brighthouse, and just LOVE it. You can record two programs at one time. I love to be watching a "live" program and beable to rewind and relisten to what is said because sometimes I don't catch it the first time through. I rent the box from Brighthouse. I am really happy with DVR. |

Or, if something is really hilarious (e.g., The Office, Desperate Housewives, the Geico commercial with the Cabbage Patch Kid in a "where are they now" special, lol), you get to rewind your tv and watch it over and over! |
I'm the only person out of my friends who doesn't have DVR or TIVO, and guess who watches the most tv.
We just chose the wrong cable company when we moved here, and now I'm too lazy to switch. Can't imagine how many shows I'd watch if I had those additional channels like HBO, etc.... |
We also have Time Warner and have the "all in one" bundle where we have the DVR for the main tv, 2 computers with internet and telephone service. It's actually a good price for all that we get and the 2 tv's upstairs (my bedroom and my teen boys 'play' area) have just basic cable as well.
We do love our DVR as well as those here have said. SOMEONE in this house is always taping a show or 2. |
Thats what we have the all in one plan. But I still wounder if it is worth buying our own DVR, not pay for theirs. |

Well, the positive for just renting from the cable company would be if it breaks you can just exchange for a new one....I assume that is how it works. A DVR is just like a computer so it can suddenly have problems just like a computer If we have problems with our Tivo we can send it in and pay to have it repaired or buy a new one...that is unless it is really new and still under some type of warranty. |
