Puppy won't eat!

Nanny is not showing interest in meal time! :? We feed her at 7am, 12:30pm, and 7pm, but she doesn't eat much of it. I was starting to worry, but I read some old threads and it sounds like a common problem. The breeder told me that sometimes their appetites change as they get older... however, I just bought a giant $50 bag of the Royal Canin Large Breed Puppy food and I want her to eat it! :x  (That is what the breeder said she was using)

She gets the dry food (sometimes moistened with a little water) for breakfast and lunch, and 1/2 can of Iams Chicken & Rice mixed with the dry food for dinner. She doesn't act hungry, and she has plenty of energy, but I still think she should eat more. We put about a cup of dry food in her bowl each time, and she eats very little of it. My friends with dogs said she'll eat when she's hungry. Any other suggestions?

I also bought Nutro Ultra Puppy treats, and she's had a few of those (although they crumble and go everywhere! :o  )

Thanks for the help!

Just keep putting food down, she will eat when she is hungry. If she starts to act lethargic or appears ill I would get her to a Vet ASAP. But odds are she will eat sooner than later.
I agree with the pp. Unless she is underweight (ribs actually coming out), I don't worry. I REFUSE to give in to a picky eaters wants (in regards to trying other foods). This is extremely common for toy breeds. We usually tell them they won't starve themselves or to try hand-feeding to get them started.

This is what I had to do for my maltese as she hated her food.

You can also try putting a little water in their food, let it sit for 10-15 min and then give it.

Other people are willing to do more to accommodate their dog ;) By of course putting veggies in it or sprinkle a little white cheese. Or adding moist/wet food.

Or you could do nothing and just leave her daily amount out for her to eat whenever.

BTW, I was ALWAYS concerned about my dog's weight until she was prob 2-3 (my smaller dog). She barely ate. ...like a few kibbles, which would probably be equivalent to 1/2-1 C for a big dog. Yet every time I took her into the vet, they said THIS IS THE WEIGHT SHE SHOULD BE AT. Guess she ate when she was hungry. More on some days than others..
Oh bless, shall I send Summer over she could eat for England!

My yorkie is fussy so I always moisten the food and not give too much. If give her a saucerful she steps back in shock. So I just give a small amount, and sometimes put grated cheese on to start her off. I know its silly but our last dog didnt like metal dishes and had to have a flat large saucer...worth a try..
She has only been home a short time and still settling in. One suggestion, make sure she is fed in a quiet area with no distractions, leave the food down for 20 minutes then take it up. If she hasn't eaten it then wait till the next scheduled feeding and try again.

She won't starve herself, sometimes it is just a matter of a quiet area with no one walking around her or distractions to interupt her while she is eating till she settles in.

Try that and see how you go. You could also add a bit of cooked chicken flesh, no skin, no bones, into her dry just to tempt her on one of her meals through the day, even a little bit of boiled rice as well. (don't add too many different things to her meals if she has not had them before or you could upset her system)

I am sure she will be up and eating on schedule soon, just still transitioning into her new enviroment so many new wonders for a pup and they can easily be distracted from their food..
Stephanie----

I wastedo much food the first week Heart came...Even now sometimes she hardly eats, then at the next feeding ,she inhales it...  I agree she is still acclimating to her new home, missing mom and her siblings...Next week you'll probably be asking "Why is she so Hungry!!!!1
