Apparently resistant to the majority of antibiotics. Scary stuff! |

I just heard they closed down 20 schools because a student died from it. I forget where this was.
Is it a staph bacteria? |
21 schools closed after teen dies of staph

There is a lot of stuff like this out there. If the general population new how much, they'd be totally freaked out. Things like VRE and MRSA are rampant through hospitals and rehab centers. |
Gee, in light of the many deaths from this, will we get a colored ribbon to wear for this Superbug?
Wash your hands, sing a children's ditty while you scrub to remind yourself to wash long enough. Teach your family to do the same. If you are worried about water waste, turn it off while scrubbing (should be doing that anyway). |
The kid died in VA... |
We've had LOTS of MRSA cases in the schools around here lately, too. Scary. |
The news talked about how it may have always been around, it was more confined to hospitals. It just started to spread at an uncontrollable rate.
I do agree there is a lot out there that would scare the bejeezus out of folks. If people know how deadly an Anthrax attack (in the air ...in the smallest dose) is and the rate/chance of people recovering... they'd freak considering they only vaccinate military and a small number of personnel. |
MRSA and VRE are everywhere. The incidence is rising, and it is being found more and more outside hospitals and rehabs. D/T the higher incidence, our hospital is doing DRO tests on all pts admitted to the ICU. UPON admission, so it can be tracked if they came in with it, or picked it up in the hospital.
We had a patient - a college student who picked a blister on his foot, and then it wouldn't heal. Turns out he had MRSA and picked it up in the college dorm showers. Healed fine once a drug that was sensitive was used. |
MRSA is becoming more prevelent. Some experts blame the over use of antibiotics for the resistence of the strain and other " super strains ". It is more common in institutional settings; hospitals, schools, prisons.
As gross as it sounds to us, it's important to remind your kids to not to share personal belongings such as clothes, gym towels, deodorant, etc. Also athletic items ( helmet's, pads, mats.....) should be disinfected before use. And wash hands frequently. Good hygiene is a good prevention. If you notice a boil like lesion that is red/inflamed and appears to have a core you should have it checked. |
