Our 11 month, Old English "Teddy" has recently developed this out of control urge to go totally crazy when a school bus, UPS truck, garbage truck, vehicles that make noise goes by, making walks next to impossible!!!! he weighs 64lbs. making holding on a real deal!!!! Does anyone have any helpful suggestions I'm at my wits end with this behavior!! Thanks, |

The only advice I can give is when you see first see the vehicle/truck, make him sit and tell him it's ok. He might be scared of the delivery style trucks or buses. Obe will go the other side of me if we are on a walk and encounter a bus or bigger truck. |
You MUST get your dog under control during walks for everyone's safety!
May I suggest this for immediate results: http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?p=8097#8097 Then you can work on training. I have had my dog for 3 years (he's 5 now) and have not yet been able to take the prong collar off. He is a determined puller, and we cannot train him away from it, and frankly at this point we've given up. He loves to go for walks and brings his prong collar to us when it is time to go. |
listen to others get the dog under control 13 yrs ago i lost my oes to a ups truck .. |
My Fozzy, at 3 years old and l02 lbs does this too. I have had some success with the gentle leader collar. When he tries to make a lunge, his head gets whipped around sideways and it distracts him. |
Thanks everyone for your advice I truly appreciate it. Teddy's behavior is pretty much the same and I am researching a trainer who can come to the house and work with me in the behavior surroundings.
Shon: I've been trying to let Teddy know everything is okay however it seems to go unnoticed he is tensely focused on the vehicles and not me. Ron: The prong collar is something I've been using for about 2 months now,However your web site on the collar was extremely beneficial I realized I had the collar on to lose so making it tighter helped me keep a better grip on him he doesn't pull as hard, However the behavior is still out of control. Suzptcruise: I'm very sorry to here of the lose of your OES. I fear this could happen to Teddy if he gets a way from me. Bens Mom: I was using the gentle leader on Teddy before the prong collar> he was still pulling way to much for me he is very strong!!! I like the collar but it did not seem to work for him. My frustration continues with him because I can't figure out the cause to his need to go after these vehicles. Teddy loves to ride in the car> and just this morning taking my daughter to school he started a new thing going crazy over the buses at the school while in the car he had not done this before. We have always lived in this neighborhood Teddy has been walked everyday in these surroundings> We live near two schools a fire/police department so none of these things are new to him just the behavior- within the last month and half. and I was walking him about three miles a day for the exercise for both of us, However I can't stand taking him out anymore. I have even e-mailed Cesar the dog whisper, He receives to many e-mails a day, they told me to contact a local trainer for advice. I'm beginning to think Sheep dogs belong on the farm away from the city life!!!!! I'll keep you posted on my progress. Teddy's Mom |
Guest, Where do you live? We found a trainer that comes to the house in Denver. We started with him last night. He a bit expensive but I liked what he showed us and it seems to work so far. He showed us how to walk with Bella and get her to stop pulling. This morning was the first walk that I did not feel like my arm was going to come off. I'll let people know how things go with time. |
Bellas Dad
We are located in Michigan. The pulling is not the problem it is his uncontrollable need to bark and go after the school buses,UPS trucks, Garbage trucks ect.. anything that makes noise when it passes by. He sounds like he would attack if he could. However I am in the process of finding someone to come to the house. Thanks for your input!!! |
Where in Michigan are you at? Perhaps I can recommend someone for you if you're in my area (or at least areas that I know dog stuff in!). |

Have you tried the "Leave It" Command. If I understand your problem Teddy wants to chase the UPS Trucks, school buses etc. So if these things catch his attention you give the Leave It Command to refocus his attention back to you.
We have a problem with passing other dogs - Miley always wants to play. I saw another person use Leave It to re-direct her dog away from Miley. It may work for cars and trucks as well. Just an idea - I have not tried it but Leave It seems to have many uses. |
Monsters Mom:
We use Leave it if we drop something on the floor- Maybe it will work I'm going to give it a try!!!! Thanks, all advice is worth tiring. |
I am getting Chopin one of the leads they mentioned but I have found that he responds well to trained command words, when he is freaking out by a person or an item he is unused to during a walk I give the command stop and sit and that tends to cause him to stop abruptly and sit down while I get back to him--not to say it calms him at all or that he doesn't still need assurance that he is okay but it does tend to give me control of him again--hope that helps a bit |
I'm sorry that Teddy has developed an issue with trucks. I know exactly how you feel. Oscar has trouble with ALL vehicles, and wanted to chase them. For him, I think it has to do with his deafness, and his focus on all moving things.
This is what has worked for us. When a car or truck is coming, I tap Oscar so he is focused on me, and then give him a "sit" command, and then a "stay" command. I hold a treat (piece of kibble) in my hand, and instead of obsessing about the car, he stares at my hand. Once the vehicle has passed, I give him the treat and we continue on our merry way. After a couple of weeks, Oscar started going to the side of the road and sitting everytime he saw a car, before I could do the sign! Oscar cannot wear a pinch collar due to issues with his trachea, so I have the Gentle Leader harness for him. He still pulls with it now and then, but we seem to have redirected his angst about passing cars. One other thing to note....reassuring Teddy when he is in this state might actually be inadvertently reinforcing the behavior. Telling him that "it's okay" when he's lunging and barking means it's okay to lunge and bark and he thinks the behavior is acceptable. Laurie and Oscar |
sorry to hear of your problems walking Teddy thats when Dutch behaves her best, I use a Gentle Leader and when we first started walking if a person came down the sidewalk I would take her onto the grass verge, tell her to sit and let the person walk by telling her what a good girl she was . If she got a bit ahead of me I say side and pat my hip and she then turns and comes close to me. I also take her to a plaza and walk with her in the parking lot and near the highway so she could get used to all the loud motor noises. and as for any other good behavour.. don't ask she is a not so little monster . |
My dog does this too-he's 20 lbs (not an oes of course!) so he's easier to control but it's very annoying. Does your dog know how to heal? I may a clucking noise with my voice and then take treats with me and make my dog heal when a UPS truck or school bus is in the area. Distracts him and he behaves like a champ. now I just have to cluck at him and he stops barking-if he doesn't, we heal. |
Teddys Mom, try this place:
http://thecanineworkshop.net/our_trainers.htm They are located on Groesbeck near 16 Mile in Clinton Twp, it's not that far from you if you take 696 to the Groesbeck exit. Call them, if they can't come to your house they probably know someone who does. Good luck, hopefully it's just a phase that will pass. bdx4 |
