Warning - the following picture could possibly be termed gross but I wanted to stress that this is what can occur if you do not clean and properly care for a sheepie's ears: The dog had to be sedated to have her ears properly cleaned and the following day this is what her ear looks like now: This foster dog is right now on antibiotics twice a day by mouth and antibiotic ointment to the ear twice a day as well. |

I hope she's feeling better soon. |
How could anyone let an ear get so bad. The smell alone should tell them something was up! |
Oh, wow, that ear look gross. Poor dog, it had to feel just awful. I hope she is feeling better. |
Oh poor baby, how can people let those ears get that way.
So glad she is under treatment, hope it all is comfortable and gone real soon, must of been so painfull for her. |
OUCH! That poor girl, hope the antibiotics kick in fast and she's better soon. |
How horrible!!!
Poor girl! I hope the meds work quickly to rid her of infection. |
Poor girl! Panda's ears looked very similar to that when he arrived at my place. It took a couple of sedations and ear flushings to get them back to normal. Just touching the ears when they are that bad brings pain to the dog.
Wyn - thanks for all you do. You're an angel to help the fosters out. Marianne |
Unbelieveable. Poor, poor puppy.

I'll bet the smell was horrific. |
Ick!
Bet the dog feels better now! |
Wow, that's awful! I was brushing Boni today, which includes checking ears, teeth, paws, butt, etc. and he cried when I touched his right ear. When I looked at it, it was very dirty...well, now I see that it's not even close to your foster pup's ear! Poor baby! It's amazing what one person can do to an animal and what cab another.
Also, I'm sorry to change the topic but since Boni hasn't had ear infections before I don't really know what to do with him. I've been cleaning his ears, and his black ear is nice and clean. The white one though has this brown goo in it. And every time I want to look at it, he cries. We are going away for the weekend with them to the woods...is there a quick relief that anybody knows of that could help him? |
Get some ear cleaning solution and flush the ear out then using cotton swabs/Q tips start to clean it. Get it as clean as you can get it. Make sure there is no long hair inside the ear - if there is pull it out. Use some ear powder to help dry out the ear. If the ear is still bothering him next week - take him to the vet for some Otomax ear antibiotic ointment. |
Oh, good. That's what I've been doing. So, now I just have to wait and see. I hope he gets better. Thank you for you advice! |

If you're concerned about sticking a Q tip around the ear canal (if Boni is a squirmer)you can use those big cotton pads like you use to take off makeup to wipe out the ears just to be safe. My boys are so big, their ear canals are pretty wide so you can use the tip of pad to wipe the ear clean on the inside and it gets the flap very clean too. If the ear isn't that dirty and it's just on the flap, I don't put ear wash in the ear, just a little on the pad and I wipe it clean on the outside and keep an eye on it. I try to keep their ears as dry as possible. Extra moisture in the ear is never good. |
