Anyways, so my question is: What made you decide on an OES instead of a Lab if you shave your dog down to such a degree? I am asking because I would do the same thing (except for head), and am trying to decide myself. NOT between an OES or LAB, but my reasoning towards a certain breed in general. My preference would be a non-shedding dog BUT I have to take into considering the wants of my fiance (so I am open-minded). Both are VERY affectionatee Both are loyal, can be protective. Both are known to enjoy water/sporty Labs tend to be less stubborn and shed less... So what are your thoughts? |

consideration* |
i dont think i will EVER own a lab.. i dont shave my oes, so i'll take that into consideration.
i have never met a young lab (and a lot of older labs) that weren't totally insane. Especially the chocolates. I have never met a chocolate lab I've liked. They are too hyper, clingy, and nutty for my tastes. I don't like short haired breeds much either. Labs, being a retriever, are more likely to eat my birds than an OES. EVERYBODY owns a lab! Labs are heavily overbred (and inbred). It's getting harder and harder to find one that is less likely to have hip problems or obesity (since labs are so very prone to being overweight). And lastly, OES are just cuter!!! |
Actually the lab gene pool is much much larger than oes, an oes is far more likely to be "inbred" than a lab.
As to the comment that a lab sheds less, this is SO not so! Labs shed a lot, and almost constantly, and lab fur is short and straight so it sticks into fabrics and is harder to get out. OES are not exactly a non shedding breed so to speak, but they tend to shed at one time of year and usually in clumps, like dust bunnies of fur you simply have to pick up. They do however require a lot of grooming unless you plan on keeping their coat short. Labs and OES really don't have much in common in my oppinion, and I've owned both. To me, nothing compares to the personality of an OES. There are many breeds I love, and would love to have one or two of all my favorites, LOL, but I think my family would kick me and the dogs out of the house if I did...lol... but a lab is one breed I wouldn't go out of my way to have. My favorites are, obviously, OES, but I also love great danes, boxers, dobermans, schnauzers, and I love the look of akitas and huskies, but they shed like crazy and the akita temperment is not one I am able to deal with because I have children and other animals. Not that all akitas are bad with kids and other pets, but it is common. I would definitely research your choice thoroughly, make sure it is a decision you and your fiance are going to be happy with and committed to for many years. |
I don't shave mine down either, but even seeing them shaved they don't remind my anything of a lab. I have had a lab once, I am an animal lover, but I wouldn't do it again. I agree with Roofus, I have never met a lab old or young that wasn't insane.
The one we had was an awful shedder, completely different than an OES's way of depositing a nice fluff ball on the carpet. Lab hair goes everywhere, and it doesn't vaccum very easily. I don't see any resemblence in the lab and OES on any level. JMO. When I started choosing what breed we wanted. I took a lot of consideration, the most being my 2 young kids and our cats. Most of what I read about breed standard was they were good with kids and other animals. It took us a little over a year to decide on a breed. We actually narrowed it down to 3. OES, Newfoundland, and a basset hound. Funny choices huh? The basset would have been great with the kids, but I wasn't sure with the cats. My husband also wanted a larger dog to run with and play ball, ect. The Newf is still a breed I hope to have one day. I am not in any rush, as I have my hands full enough and I still am not positive how my neatness would do with drool and slobber hanging from the ceiling. LOL I like a lot of the terrier breeds, but kids and other pets, it wouldn't of been a good choice. Good luck choosing a dog....or the dog choosing you. |
I have 2 OES which I do not shave. I work / multiple people who have labs. Currently the person sitting next to me has 2 labs. Our dogs play together quite often and their personalities are very different. Sheepdogs are clowns, they are just plain goofy. The labs are fun but they are more rough and tumble. Their purposes are different.
They also don't look alike. When we take all of our dogs swimming the wet sheepdogs and wet labs have very different structures. Sheepdogs have a thinner neck and rounder head. They also have larger backsides/hips and thicker legs. Having seen the lab hair laying around at my friend's house just after cleaning I would say they do shed quite a bit. Everytime you pet them down their backs, you get hair. Sheepdogs are nowhere near that. After constantly debating the: which breed is better issue at work; I've been round and round the differences quite a bit. Not to say one is better than the other, a breed has to be right for the person who is keeping them. Once size has been decided on, the differences in personality have to be matched appropriately. |
After thinking about my original post, I can see the many differences now.
I still think that AT LEAST 8 out of 10 random people would agree that if you were to scroll down to the second picture here: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/oldenglishs ... photos.htm ....and many others that are shaved, their first 5 guesses would not be a OES. |
Danggit, I hate forgetting to put my name in the username spot.
Anyways, I want to emphasize that I'm not talking about the ones partially shaved, but the ones that are SHAVED down completely. |
If shedding were so high on my list I surely wouldn't get a lab. Don't laught, but I'd get a standard poodle. These are smart, healthy dogs and if you don't trim them into pompoms, they look fine in their curly coat. In fact I'm now seeing poodles with braids.....sorta cornrows, LOL! No, I'd keep mine in a puppy cut or slightly longer. Plus you have a color choice: black, white, apricot, cream....any others??
Question to all: Do Portuguese Water Spaniel's shed? |
no, they do not.
I am considering a Labradoodle. I will let my FI decide. I will love any of the narrowed choices. All of our choices are high maintenance. |
Samantha came shaved from the rescue center and it has been great! She really doesn't shed much and with the house breaking/crate training thing, it has been easier to maintain. Plus we live in Florida where it is still 90+ outside. When it starts getting cooler, I will let her coat get longer. |
I work with 2 portugese water spaniels and one has very curly hair that doesnt shed and one has longer straight hair that also doesnt shed. so i guess the answer is no? they both have very distinct personalities and i just love them and have considered the breed for my next dog!
i think that labs might be in the top 5 shedders of dogs that i work with, and botht the sheepdogs that ive owned have not shed at all except occasionally in clumbs and while being brushed. |
I think I need to chime in here for obvious reasons.
I love the OES. I like Labs. So I got both---in one. He is as goofy as an OES but so far, I have only noticed OES traits in him. So far, he sheds like both too. Fur balls floating around (and we brush every day) and hair on my shirts...not too bad tho. If you are considering a labradoodle, you may want to look into any "accidental" breedings of OES and Lab. So far so good here! |
I've never heard of that! Do you have a pic? haha |
Sorry, that was me....I forget that when I clean out my cache I have to log back in!
All of the pics that I have posted in previous threads can be seen here: www.seipa.net/poohbear.htm |
oh how cool. Very cute. I bet no one can ever guess what kind of dog you have. hehe |
He he! love the pics! There were some new ones on there that i didn't see before! LOL He is adorable! And your cat...well you know already! Also have to mention that i love the names~ Fits them perfectly, i think! Christopher Robin! LOL Too cute! |
jmarcus... just in regards to your comments on your pups shedding,... I would mention that to the vet, and perhaps look into what foods you are feeding and making sure the pup gets enough water, your pup is only 12 or 13 weeks old right? A pup that young shouldn't lose any hair at all, not even really when brushing. |
I shaved Abbi this last time because I knew I wouldn't be able to bend over for 12 weeks.
I always let her grow out during the winter. She looks and acts nothing like a lab. My 4 all-time favorite dogs that I have owned were .... (drum roll) ... a border collie, a chocolate lab, a standard poodle, and Abbi, oes. I have cared for a cocker spaniel, mixed collie, german shepard, and now a chesapeake bay retriever. None were bad dogs, just had no special attachment to them. The only dog that doesn't shed is a surgically shaved one. Even shaved, some shedding occurs. Even that chinese hairless sheds from its head. And they also shed their skin just like we do, well sort of like we do, so they add to the dust level in the house. I picked Abbi because she picked me. Never thought of picking a dog by its breed until I became involved in forums. Each breed supposedly has its unique characteristics, but each individual dog has its own personality. That said I love Abbi, and I love her fluffy and shaved. She's nothing like my docile (mine was not that active, unless you took her near water or played fetch, she was at my side) chocolate lab, or my obedient, intelligent standard poodle. By the way, Abbi doesn't like to jump into water unless there's a reason, but my lab would jump in every time we passed a body of water. Not the same at all. Abbi is quite special. She's the first one who has tried to talk to me ... |
Aaawww! Aginright! I loved your dog tails! LOL Mopsey talks to us too! LOL How are you feeling? |
