Fiber? Metamucil? Prunes or Prune Juice?
Is this a side effect of your medications? Maybe your doctor will have a suggestion for you. |
I'm sure it's the pain meds. Narcotics do that to me. Lots and lots of water. My doctor prescribed a stool softener too. |
Lactulose.
But for a more fun way, just have some sugar free chocolates with maltitoal and other sugar alcohols. I wouldn't be too concerned, but tell your physician anyway. |
This gross Darcy.........but it works.
Prune juice and milk of magnesia mixed together and then warm it up. Plug your nose and down like the best shot you ever had in college. Bottoms up Kim |
oh yuck does that sound super nasty.....blech....but worth a shot i guess....anyone else have anything that isnt quite as gross?????? |
Well, in the military... people don't go for over a week in Basic Training. Their always told to drink coffee and like clockwork, people start pooping... |

Bottoms up Kim HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I'm rolling on the floor laughing my butt off, because THAT WAS MY FIRST THOUGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOBODY knows how to get your bowels going like nurses You need to make sure you are drinking TONS of water and getting lots of fiber if you are still taking pain medication. Between the anesthesia and the morphine your poor little intestines have gone into hiding . Nothing more miserable than narcotic induced contstipation. Prune juice and milk of mage is a great cure, and it actually doesn't taste too bad . You also want to get yourself an OTC stool softener to take at least two times a day til things are moving again. |
Darcy wrote: anyone else have anything that isnt quite as gross?????? You don't like the sugar free chocolates?
They draw water into your intestines... Russel Stover makes a nice version. Get about 30 or 40mg of the sugar alcohols and you'll get moving. |
Go to the nearest dog park...Works for Bosley.... |

Scared spitless. |

I vote for Mexican food!!! |
okay it hurts when i laugh....maybe you guys werent the best people to ask after all......lol.......
i just did another shot of milk of m....sorry to say i have no prune juice |
I find that all I need to do is get on the phone with someone that I need to talk to. Never fails |
MOST SERIOUSLY Darc, don't go too long. Post op stop up is a real problem. If you have to, go to the store and get a bottle of Mag Citrate, it's pretty harsh but it will do the trick. YOU DON'T WANT TO BE DISIMPACTED, NOT a pretty site. |
Citrate of Mag is my vote too.......tasts like (sweet 7-up to me)...Was recommended when I was pregnant...it worked for me.........good luck and keep us posted............................ |
You have been given very good advise so far and if all else fails there is always the Fleet Enema.......
I am volunteering to come and walk you....it works for Violet everytime. |
There's always supositories. |
Cigarettes and a cup of coffee. WAIT. We don't smoke any more. I agree with mag citrate. |
LICORICE!!
Austrailan chewing licorice. Mmmm Love it! |

Austrailan chewing licorice. Mmmm Love it! Actually that is the absolute truth!! We once had a thoracic surgeon who prescribed black licorice for his patients after surgery. We would have to go tot he hospital gift shop to get it. |
Ugh...sorry your pooper ain't working right, Darce
Try Miralax for a few days. It's a tasteless powder that you can put in any drink. It is now sold over the counter at any pharmacy and did a huge tv marketing campaign recently. It's my lifesaver now that my meds are off the market. For immediate relief, Fleet enemas. Personally, fiber makes me worse. Mag Citrate will turn you off to anything lemon or lime for a very long time. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water and lips pucker up . |
Swing a dead cat over your head! Oh, nebbermind, that's for warts! |

I've never had surgery I just LOVE licorice but you pay for it the next day if you eat too much!!! better than other horrible tasting medicines too |
I think the black licorice is just being recycled.
Take that whichever way you want. |
eh? |
Poor Darce...Nothing worse than being stopped up!
Try a STRONG cup of coffee and a bowl of fiber-rich cereal... |

Take that whichever way you want. Thanks I will never think of licorice in the same way!!! |
WELL, DARCY HOW ARE THINGS MOVING |
Wow, I somehow missed this one!!!
I hope things are moving, but here is what we do on our unit: Start a stool softener - surfak or colace the day after surgery. Take daily as long as you are on narcotics. Start giving 30 ml (1 oz) MOM the 2nd night after surgery. Repeat daily as needed. If no BM on the 3rd day, we give a dulcolax suppository. By evening if no BM, give a fleet enema. We also use brown cows - MOM with cascara. The cascara is like liquid black licorice - smells wonderful! The MOM and prune juice works well - except we add that to a small glass of warm milk! Seriously, it is not that bad, although it sounds horrendous. I actually tried a small taste, as I would never give it to a patient without knowing how bad it was. I was pleasantly surprised! |
Since we haven't heard from Darcy directly in about 2 days, has anyone talked with her lately?
Last we knew, she was headed back to the surgeon for a checkup yesterday. I wonder if they removed one of the pain killers. |
Maybe she's in the potty? |
My gues, and I hope I am right, is that with her Mom there now she is just kicking back and getting some TLC!!! |
Tasker's Mom wrote: My gues, and I hope I am right, is that with her Mom there now she is just kicking back and getting some TLC!!!
That would be my guess too. You know how moms hog up all your time when they come visit... |
Thank heaven for moms!!!
|
moms here!! yup, just relaxing with her, taking long naps with brian( hes in heaven) and having tons of visitors!!
the milk of m worked....a little too much....can you say explosion?? ahh well, at leasts that end is working again.... i got yellled at by my surgeon....i need to start moving my arm...i told him i was and showed him and told me i was a sissy and to do it a harder way....sissy...i want to see him get something cut off!! God love Chuck, but every time im doing my new exercises, I curse his name!!!! |
Darcy it is good to hear that things are starting to move.(clear throat) It is always great to have Mom there, there's nothing like it. Regarding your arm...remember the saying "no pain no gain" I guess this is what they where talking about.
Regarding your other post about the drugs and the dreams...girl the dreams I have had on peracet since the shingles wooow. Did you notice that you never really go in to stage three of sleep? It does keep you tired. Anyway, good luck with everything....keep your great attitude....they really do have some cool looking wigs. Get one in ever color, why not! Good luck and I'm going to keep praying for a quick recovery. |
Wig shopping does sound fun! Do you watch Desperate Housewives? Lynette was wearing a wig after chemo, and she kept getting comments from people about how her hair has never looked better!
And you can go from brunette to blonde to red-head without frying your hair. |
Good news Darcy, about the poop explosion!
Keep working that arm, swear at the Dr. or whatever it takes. You really want to keep the skin (and joint) flexible. If you don't you will have limited motion later on! I keep getting cracked up at the post listing. Under healthy lifestyles there is this post called "making things work again", then directly under it is "late night snacking" by Paula. Cracks me up every time!!! (And this from someone who couldn't notice there were 2 members named Richy with pups named Alfie who look very different!) |
Darcy, its nice to hear that old sacrasm from you again! You're on the road! And its wonderful you have the opportunity to "drink" in your family. But...get those arms moving!!!! Listen to Dr. Chuck. He's got a great rhyming name! |
Very easy problem, get a bottle of mag citrare from any pharmacy. Chill it well and drink up. All of it, abt 10 oz. Its really not bad, tastes like sprite with a hint a salt. The colder the better. Try it |
