Someone hacked into our internet.

We've been being charged 200-300 dollars extra since June time frame. I never noticed b/c the bill is automatically deducted from our account and I never thought to take a closer look since it's always been the same for 2 years.

Holy crap, I'm just shocked.

I guess it was an overage fee. Someone has been using my internet to download movies, music etc. My new billing cycle just started, and I'm already coming close to maxing my limit (currently $200 over the normal billing).

Considering I never touch the settings, I have a feeling that this happened when I got my computer fixed. I wrote on here that I had to send my entire computer to Dell.... I also had a tech come over from my internet company early summer.

Anyway, it's now secured. I feel like saying a few #%$@% @#%@%$@$ @$%@%$......

Guess this teaches me not to check my bills. Screw hard lessons.. phooey

Yikes! 8O I guess you don't have unlimited internet use.
I hope everything is straightened out now.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is there anything you can do about that??? That is ALOT of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do have unlimited internet use. Uhhh, well except for the downloading youtube, music, etc. But I NEVER DO!!! Maybe 5 videos I watch in a month that are only 2-5 minutes long that I see posted on forums. Anyway, the internet company said my limit is ridiculously high, so to exceed it, someone has to be doing a crazy amount of downloading.

I hope no one was using it for child pornography.
Do you have wireless internet?
Yes. Netgear.
My neighbor ( who fixed my computer) was warning me they other day about wireless.
He said people with wireless should be closing there connections when it's not in use.... or you could end up with something like this happening.

It had to have been someone close..... like in your neighborhood.
Sorry it happened. I think when we do network our computers it will be with a router.
I don't trust wireless. I know my daughter told me that where she lives she doesn't even need to have a wireless service. At her apartment she turns her computer on and it picks up wireless from someone else. I bet it never occurred to her that that person might be paying based on online time. So "theoretically" there could be ALOT of people using your connection.
I guess stolen usage isn't like a stolen credit card, where the company will credit the funds back to you and persue the thief?

That really sucks! :x

I'm sorry. :(

My sister uses her neighbors.
They credited one month. I still paid over $700.

I trust wireless. I don't blame the smart person who used the free internet I was handing out. They wouldn't have been able to if my settings weren't changed, which I guarantee happened when techs came and messed w/my laptop.

It's too complex for me or lil J to have done ourselves w/o knowing. I didn't know how to until I called to fix it.
Wow, that doesn't sound good. We have wireless too but our computer is protected or safe or what ever it's called. When someone wants to connect to the internet and it gives you the option which connection you want to use. Some of them are not locked and those are the ones people can use. Is that what happened to you?

I hope what I'm saying makes sense.
My son is a IT manager. He came over to do some work on my computer and after he finished he told me that there were 6 unprotected wireless users in my neighborhood that anyone can just use.

He was going to email them and let them know what they should do to protect themselves.

(It's all gibberish to me)..
My son uses a wireless modem, he has the security in place to stop others hacking into his account. Apparently it is an easy thing to do for anyone with wireless broadband.

I'll stick to the landline broadband.
This is my first attempt at getting online in 3 days.
We got hit too - and it's a bad one.
I have been running trend micro, microsoft defender and
system mechanic and I can't get rid of it.
It seems to be one of those trojans that drops a file and
then after replicating in a different name deletes the original
file.

HELP!! Anyone have any clue how to get this off my
computer? We have been watching the bank accounts closely
every day, but I'm paranoid now about even being online.

Shellie
Shellie there is definately something going around at the moment, my security service "McAfee", the personal firewall has stopped 7 trojans today, 10 since Monday, from accessing my computer. Did an event tracing and it is coming from San Jose all these attacks.

My security service had automatically blocked these.
I know were we live if our wireless goes down my hub goes somewhere in the compter and sets it up and I notice my neibours is there and someone down the street and we could click on it and hook up on theirs it is wireless and multi use more up to four computers can use it. But no extra charges?
Yes, a lot of people do that ej.

The charge comes not from surfing but transferring stuff from the internet to your computer. Just big stuff like entire movies, a million music files, etc...
Well - I'm back online anyway.
We could not remove the virus or the
malware/adware/spyware. We ended up
dumping the entire computer - yet again - and
reformatting. This is the 4th time this year we had
to start all over. Pain in the butt. Last time our
drive was actually fried.
Luckily I was able to back up my music files this time
before we dumped it.
We are now running more protection programs than
all other programs combined - for real. It has come
to this.

Shellie
Welcome back Shellove!
Are there laws against using someone else's wireless connection if they leave it unsecured and you aren't hacking anything to get into it? I'm guessing that a lot of this goes on, especially in apartment buildings, and people probably just don't realize that what they are doing could end up in financial charges for someone else. I would be very worried that someone using someone else's wireless connection for illegal activities could potentially get that person into legal trouble as the IP address is attached to the address of the actual wireless connection, not the physical address of the computer.
