I am doing a sampler for my brand new grandaughter. I add DOB, time, weight, etc I made each of my children one when they were born. My kids still talk about them. Anyway, my question is, when it is finished, should I was & iron it? Do you thing dry cleaning is better? Also should I have it framed with or w/o glass? my Dad framed the ones I made for my kids He is no longer w/ us. thx |

It depends on what kind of fabric you are using and if you are working inside a frame or in a hoop. Of course, if it gets soiled any, it will need to be washed. Washing seems to set the stitches and colors. Be sure you use quality threads so they don't run. I wash mine in a little Ivory liquid (NOT woolite), a little white vinegar and cold water. Squeeze out the water, do not wring, and lay flat on towel for drying. When dry, press from wrong side.
Framing is nice or making it into a pillow. If framing, glass is personal preference. I didn't use glass on some of my early ones, and since have gone back and added glass - stays much cleaner. Hope this helps. |
This is VERY helpful, THANK YOU! sue |
I was wondering, why not Woolite?
Would matting, even double matting help? I agree, glass to keep it clean and maybe even a UV resistant glass. No pillows, they get damaged and dirty. |
What does the vinegar do? |

Do use mats, or spacers, as you don't want the glass to touch, or rest on the embroidery. You will also need to have it "stretched". Vinegar will help set the colors. I worked as a picture framer for years, and we did a lot of needlework framing . |
I concur, ravenmoonart....exactly! |
