Skyler had played all afternoon with Max, even having a little tea party. ( too cute) They really had a good time together. When it was time to go, we were all out by their van trying to help get the kids and all of their junk loaded. Skyler was not happy about leaving and was being a bit of a pistol. She would run back and forth- around the van etc. I could tell her parents were wearing thin- so- with a stern voice I grabbed her as she ran by and told her enough was enough. Not a bit mean , just let her know we meant business. Max was at my side right now- growling at me- and he actually bit my hand. Not hard- no broken skin- just enough to let me know HE meant business. This is a side we have NEVER seen. NEVER. The most gentle, loving animal in the world, with not a mean bone in his body. I know that he was protecting Skyler, but I was suprised he was protecting her from ME. He knows she and her sister Alayna are the world to us and we shower them with love and kisses and are soft spoken and protective of them too. Have any of you had this happen? We were all taken back. We comforted him, told him it was alright and Skyler and I hugged and cuddled him. One of those things that makes you go " hummm" |

Absolutely we've gone through that!! Buford was our first sheepie and we got him before our son was born. From the time we brought Spencer home from the hospital, Buford was on child duty!! He would herd him (and later, our daughter Sarah) and keep a watchful eye out on anyone who came near them - including US!! Even if we were just playing around with them, if we rough-housed a bit too much, Buford let us know it was NOT cool with him!
Gotta love 'em!! |
Oh yes, my first guy would always bite me whenever someone hit me.
Seriously. After we figured this out, my brother would come over and give me a playful whack on the shoulder and my big dog would immediately protect me by barking and nipping at me. If Joan played like she was going to hit me, he would immediately protect me by barking and nipping at me. I figured this would be a good thing in case of a burglary; the burglar would see my dog viciously attacking me and I would say "Imagine what he's going to do to you!" Fortunately these barks were not accompanied by a vicious bite, which he was also known to do every so often. |
We haven't had the actual nip - but Winston is super-protective of the kids and if we get on to them at all he tries to run interference and barks at us. If the kids argue with each other he gets in the middle of them and barks. |
