Then, as we were up on the trail, just past the markers where I can let Maggie go offleash, I heard someone call out a Bear warning. I waited and then out from the ravine to my right, the bear popped up onto the trail right in front of me! It was not even 50 feet away. It felt like it was right in front of me and I froze in fear. It looked like a fat adolescent, maybe 250 pounds. I am not really sure about that but he was shorter than me and very fat. He looked like a gigantic Gund come to life. Luckily, Maggie had been in the ditch to my left and somehow was facing me instead of the bear. I don't know what would have happened if she had seen the bear. The bear looked around and then ran back down into the ravine. He was actually in the exact area I had been planning to take Maggie so instead, I carefully backed up until I could not hear him anymore and then I turned around and went home. |

Oh my! You must have been soooo scared!
I think a barking dog next to a human might have made the bear run away more quickly-- unless he was hungry. Do you carry a bear horn or bear spray or anything? ummm exactly what is a bear warning? "BEAR!!!" ??? |
YIKES!
Glad the Bear ran off. |
Scary! Im so glad you guys are OK! Did you get to meet the owners of the little Sheepie pup? |
How scary, you need to come to OZ with Maggie we only have cute Koala Bears up in the gum trees when out hiking.
What sort of bear was it? Thank goodness maggie did not see it |
Glad you met yet another sheepie!! Wow, Colorado sounds great
.................but I'd be afraid to return. So scary!!! |
Oh my Val...I am so glad that you/Maggie/Buttons got out of there ok. You never know what will turn up in the woods. Are the leaves starting to change yet? |
you have bears we have gators.. too scary glad you are ok.. when i was in colorado last year with my 2 girls they loved the mountains but i keep a close leash saw too many deer |
Oh my goodness! You must have been so scared. I would have fainted right there. Glad everyone is ok!
How fun to have met Buttons! What an adorable name. |
Yikes! I think that would have been enough to scare me away from the trail for awhile, if not forever! SO glad Maggie didn't see it! Do you think she would have tried to chase it, thinking it was a new playmate? |

Basically yeah. When he called out Bear, everyone froze. He came out right near me. I was definitely scared. It is such a popular trail and it was midday (which is supposed to be safest) so I was also really surprised. Plus I was right in front of him. I didn't know how he would react. Luckily, he seemed scared too. The bears are all getting fat for winter hibernation and so they are being seen alot lately as they forage for food. Buttons was supercute and I did get to talk to her owner. Her parents have sheepdogs too. But she was on her way out so we didn't chat for long. It was ust enough time to gave Maggie and chance to wiggle and dance for the puppy. |
Scary encounter Val.. glad you and Maggie are safe.. I definately would be carrying some kind of horn or something.

Val--how scary! I know I was always a little scared on hikes in CA for mountain lions, but I never saw one. I can't imagine seeing a predatory wildlife!
I wonder what Maggie would have done. I wonder if she would have sensed the situation or if she would have been oblivious. Is Buttons the same Button from Ali's litter? |
Yipes! Especially with a dog off leash. Black bears are fortunately, shy and will usually scatter....unless they are Moms with cubs. As many bear encounters you have there and we have here.....amazingly almost no interactions with humans. Oh, we did have a bear eat a lady in her house a few years ago....but not counting that one. Poor bears, their greatest danger here is the highway or becoming too human oriented and making pests of themselves and ending up being relocated or killed.
Glad Button, Maggie and Val ...and the bear...are safe. |

I wondered if she was one of Ali's pups. She seemed about the right age. |

Happy you and Maggie were ok Val , bears are scarey |
Quote: Oh, we did have a bear eat a lady in her house a few years ago....
We had a bad drought here a few years ago and the bears were starving. Those who live in the mountains are warned about bear attracting actions: leaving pet food or bird food out, leaving doors and windows open.....common sense things, etc. Well, this older lady was a bit lax, bear came into the house and the lady could not escape. Normally a bear wouldn't bother a human unless cornered or threatened, but if starving and cornered bear....YIPES! Bears love fruit and those who have fruit trees in bear country must always watch their apples at harvest time as there may be a guest helping themselves. Don't think mountain dwellers are the only ones with big hairy guests, the bears come into town, sleep in the sand traps on golf courses.....so like Florida golfers and their 'gators, some of our courses have their own unique hazards. |
My Bear would kicked that bear's butt. |

I was hoping you'd elaborate! You can't just leave us with "A bear ate a lady around here a few years ago" |
Val, When we were in CO and I was walking up a mountain with the dogs I was singing loudly"Old McDonald Had a Farm" and kept a tight leash on them. There had been a live bear trapped a little farther up and I didn't want any uninvited guest's on my walk. If they hear you coming they will stay away as they are as scared to meet you as you are of them. I'm so glad that Maggie did not see that bear!!!! |
I'm dying to see bear here, but not the way Valerie did. My husband was golfing on base and mom and cub at the picnic table and trashcan a few feet away. There were people still sitting there eating their subway sandwiches. |
Oh how scarey!!
We have black bear that cuts through our yard almost every morning. When it's dark I always make sure ALL the lights are on outside before I take the dogs, I'm always afraid of running into the bear at night. At least during the day you can SEE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Gosh! That is frightening! So glad you & Maggie are okay. He was probably as surprised to see you as you were to see him.
I've had a few close encounters with black bears & their cubs while camping over the years. It's always a memorable experience. |
Wow! Glad you, maggie and the bear all are ok. I'm sure he was just as freaked out as you were. Ill bet he's telling his bear friends "Yeah, I was searching for berries, and the next thing I know there's this human RIGHT THERE! Good thing I got away!"
They're a lot more fun to watch if you're not face to face!!!! We have them up by my grandparent's home in Northern MN. The closest I've gotten was driving by watching one hanging out by a road sign for a diner on the way up. Close enough thanks! (I wonder if he liked their food?) Hope the rest of your autmnal hikes are quieter! Are we gonna get pics of CO in the fall? |
OMG! How scary! |
