Drowning Mona

Joan and I just saw this movie on DVD tonight.

What an all-star cast for such a small movie!
Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Neve Campbell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Will Ferrell (cameo), Brian Doyle-Murray.

Bette Midler is murdered and Danny DeVito is the cop trying to solve the case. It's a comedy/whodunit strongly bordering on unfunny farce and quite weak on the mystery. For instance: All of the cars in town are Yugos. Hillarious, eh?

The movie was just OK, it could have been a bit more refined, but apparently was done on a really small budget and shot in just 30 days. It wasn't very funny, but Danny DeVito is always good to watch. All in all worth the DVD rental and the time to watch. Especially sweet in that we "rented" it from the town library.

Wanna see Danny DeVito and Bette Midler? Rent "Ruthless People" instead.

I laughed so hard when I saw that movie in theater. On the other hand I laughed really hard when I saw Joe Dirt too. Must not have hight standards.
Oh my gosh! I'd forgotten about this little movie. I laughed my a** off when I saw it!

I love that they all drive Yugos!
But Deb, you're a lady, remember??!!
Oops  I forgot! I laughed my tushie off!
In addition to his use of the "racist" term "White Trash", this director showed a real elitist attitude towards people.

In order to obtain permission to close down the only road into town, he needed to obtain the signatures of the residents. Apparently the law requires the director himself to do this.

During his commentary in the movie, he talked twice about having to listen to endless stories and drink bad coffee during this process. How insulting!!! I'm sure he didn't call it bad coffee to their faces when he was asking for their signatures, and I'm sure he wasn't rolling his eyes to their endless stories in front of them either. He also complained that the company was forced to bring in a supply of "toilet paper, milk and bread" to supply the people if "there was an emergency up there" while the road to town was closed.

It sounds like he just doesn't "get it" why the law makes the director himself talk to the people who will be incredibly inconvenienced by his choice of location; whose lives will be disrupted for the making of his movie. I'm surprised he didn't call them "white trash", too.

There were other things that I can't recall at the moment, but this guy sounded like a real a$$. This director's name was Nick Perez. I am ashamed to say that he was born in Somerville, Massachusetts. Interestingly, Somerville has a reputation for being filled with the kind of people Nick likes to denigrate; perhaps this is an example of self loathing. I am fortified to see that his career is stalled in directing episodes of TV series now.

(Just in case you're wondering, Joan and I frequently watch a movie then immediately re-watch it with the director's commentary. Usually it is interesting and non-offensive...)
