Is he on a flea control? It might be fleas...You can try putting booties on his back feet to stop the scratching of the spots so that they dont get so red. He may be creating hot spots for himself and what helps with that is panalog ointment (animax ointment). Have you spoken with the vet about it? Maybe allergies and needs some benadryl? |
Our boy Bert had a small staph infection in that exact spot this spring. It also spread to his back leg "armpits" too Your vet would need to take a scraping and look at it under a microscope to tell if this is what it is. |
We don't have fleas here...so no flea control. There is no redness at all right now...and he doesn't scratch as much. I will ask the vet if it continues, but I don't want him to shave it because we want to show him, and that is the first thing my vet does. I think it is some dry skin...doesn't look irritated enough for staph. Can staph be invisible???? |
My friends in basset rescue swear by Gold Bond medicated powder for itchy armpits. I have never needed to try it, but those that use it love it. |
A friend of ours was having the same problems, the vet said it was a yeast infection and gave her special shampoo, she was putting in on a cloth and rubbing the sore area let sit for 5 and rinse and it is working. I think it was a bactrial shampoo |
My vet gave me the shampoo on Monday. I haven't tried it yet, because he needs a whole bath. I will start with it this weekend, but my vet just thinks it's dry skin.
He was also shaking his head which I thought was an ear infection. My vet said no, but it it probably an allergy. I am giving him benadryl (for dogs- from the vet) but I am starting to change him over to Canidae. It doesn't have an grains and I suspect this may be a wheat allergy...lots of dogs have this. |
its funny you said ears, this same pup did have something wrong with his and was given something for it also. Use the shampoo it does work. |
I will. I just hope getting him changed over to a non-allergic food will alleviate the need for the meds and the shampoo. Wheat is usually the culprit, and it is in the puppy food.
He sure loves the part that has the new food. Canidae seems to be a sucess. |
We have ours on Acana they love it and it is wheat free the change over did vert well also. The pup had picked out all the other stuff and ate only the Acana so I thought great I'''m going to have a mess and he was FINE. The break down on meat, vegys, fat are all in the right break down for dogs also.
I keep forgetting to log in ej |
Our GSD had this problem and it was also allergies. Cheyenne seems to be allergic to everything!!! The vet just gave her allergy meds, an allergy shot and told us to wash her feet when she came in from outside. |
Wish I had known about this food years ago..NATURAL LIFE..no wheat, gluten, by products of any kind..my puppy had an itchy spot and lack luster coat, my older long hair dog was shedding so badly I had to vacuum every day...3 days after beginning this food, the shedding is almost non-existent, the coats are so shiny people stop us at dog fairs to compliments them..I also began the brewers yeast later on and the younger dog eats a fish oil capsule..yuck! No allergies any more that used to plaque them both...I had the older one on expensive prescription food for years..this works great! |
