Congratulations on the training. It's going to be great for both you and your puppy. My puppy and I have been training since he was about 12 weeks old...he's now 9 months.
Some suggestions...cut the hot dogs, etc into tiny tiny pieces. Your pup is young..has he had any of these things before? You might be in for a bit of an upset tummy and/or diarrhea if you go heavy on the treats. I too train with treats and to avoid my dog from getting fat, I remember to add into his daily caloric intake the amount for the treats and perhaps cut down his food a bit to compensate. however, treats will not give a growing puppy the proper nutrients so don't rely on them to be a regular balanced meal! Can I suggest you maybe use some of his regular food kibble as treats? Clicker training is harder for us to learn than the dog...especially if you are uncordinated like me! You'll learn just perserve and stick with it and remember its all about having fun. Good luck, Diane |
Hope your first training session went well. If you want to give some health treats - we use Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance Dog Food rolls. This is actually dog food that is in a moist slicable variety and for us works great as it smells. If I get it out Miley knows we are going to be working on training. |
Thanks, I'll have to look up info on the dog food roll, I know my trainer recommends something similar, if not the same thing.
The training was great, and she ended up having extra room in her puppy kindergarten so she let us in that too! The training has been so helpful, and he's been a different dog since - well, scratch that, a much more polite version of the dog that I love. Also, it was so interesting to see him interact with other puppies. Turns out he's not the push little man that he'd like my in-laws golden retriever to believe! |
I use the Natural Balance roll too...it's great stuff. |
