Kid Nation

Seems like a perfect opportunity for money-hungry parents. More specifically the younger kids. We would never let our 8 yo participate in something like this unless we were with him 24-7. With that said, I'm curious how it will play out. I'm sure many kids learned how to work hard combined with lots of teamwork.

There are soooo many articles of people complaining about this show including parents who took their kids off the show. From kids not being in school, to kids getting hurt, the pay, kids underage "working", the general idea of the show, etc, etc, etc...

I would feel differently about it if they had done something like had a parents zone, where the parents could live in tents or something at the edge of the place and actually be there if something went wrong...

I don't think I'll watch it, mostly out of principal. And, hearing that little kid yell Viva la Revolucion on the commercial just makes this whole show seem wrong. And it takes a lot for me not to watch a reality show! 8O
Agk! 8O Lord of the Flies the reality show...noooo thanks
I've actually been looking forward to seeing what's gonna go on on the show. I'll watch it at least once.
I hadn't heard much about this show until today, so I watched it.

This show is awesome!! :D It's sort of like a funny version of Survivor, only the people are too young to be mean and manipulative, and they're supportive and honest and friendly. Taylor is adorable and I love the way she talks.

As for the kids missing school... these kids are learning such awesome life skills! The whole pioneer life is teaching them a TON of responsibility (although still within reason for their ages). They're learning the value of teamwork and hard work and earning money and how to spend it. How to deal with bosses younger than you or that sometimes you have to work harder than others but have less to show for it. Valuable, hard life lessons. A lot of people don't learn things like that until college. They already learned enough to choose an outhouse over a TV!! I think they are going to have such an awesome advantage in their outlook on life. I also think they'll appreciate their home-life and their parents providing for them so much more than before. And the kids have the option of leaving any time they want, and there's a guy who comes and guides them every few days. I don't think it's unsafe at all.

I think this show is great!! :D :D :D
The little fellow that left the show broke my heart. With the gold star thing going on it will be interesting how some of those kids change.
I always try not to base my opinion off the first episode, but I thought I found it hard to get through. Most reality shows take some time, and this was one of them for me.

pros:

1. responsibility
2. teamwork
3. leadership
4. initiative
5. handling money/making choices

cons:

1. I got a headache hearing so many kids talk, scream, being loud
2. I felt horrible for the 8 yo boy
3. In any reality show, if you touch someone else, YOU'RE GONE....... and when I saw the oldest kid push Mike, I again felt horrible. They didn't show anything, but I really hope the producers sat him down for a talk. If not, I'd be PISSED. I had a feeling that would be a problem esp. w/no parents, but knowing that (assuming I had a young kid there), there is no way I'd be okay with them doing it. While i know it happens in school, ...when you get specifics as a parent (name of the child), then I don't know one that would sit down and tolerate it.
4. I would not be okay with my kid buying chocolate with all his money for the next 40 days. ...nor would I expect him to be responsible enough to choose other things. I realize other parents wouldn't care. I'm just someone who would. My son is almost 2 and he's never had juice, caffeine, chocolate, or many other sweet things other parents allow at that age.
Just posting stuff I hear. These are the injuries revealed so far on the show:

1. 2 folks were taken to the hospital (on 2 different occasions) for x-rays that turned out to not be broken bones.
2. One girl burns her face while cooking.
3. DK accidentally mixes bleach into his drink & gets sick from it. The bottle was unmarked, and he was mixing different sodas into one bottle.

The bleach one is very disturbing. One of the cameramen/producers should have stopped him!!!
I watched America's Next Top Model but I flipped through a few times and I know this is going to sound mean, but the kids they chose for the show were all a little odd, don't you think? Like they were probably outcasts back home? Which would make for less than typical interactions with each other I'd think.

I was disturbed too about the kid using all his money to buy the chocolate. But again, it's not like he'd know any better. I'd possibly have done the same thing at his age.

I think it's an interesting idea for a show, but there just seems to be a little too much that wasn't appropriate. Oh, like the fact that the kids are going to get $$ from the show...that just seems wrong
I was so upset Greg didn't get the star. I didn't care if his incentive was to get the star. Wasn't that the point in introducing the star?!?!?! He worked hard and was super nice to everyone. Working when he didn't have to, and going out of his way to initiate many tasks.

It makes me sad that he's going to be bad next week.
It's interesting that the kids saw right through him though and saw it as just a ploy for him to get the star. I hope he's not really going to be that bad next week. I mean, if he's smart, he'll realize that maybe working hard for more than one week might earn him a star.

The scene with that girl in the chicken coop who wasn't supposed to be there really bothered me. She annoys me, but I just didn't like the fact that all the kids were yelling at her to get out and she's being a stupid kid and saying no I won't...The lack of adult intervention there got to me. I wonder if some of these things will affect the kids, self esteem-wise and stuff, for a long time. And, I didn't like the fact that she said when she was thinking of leaving, that her mom told her to come to the show.
Yes, this week's episode was a little more disturbing. 8O I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't think I could ever eat/kill an animal that I had seen walking around alive beforehand. (I couldn't watch the chicken part.) Every time we go to a seafood place I want to free all the lobsters! lol

I think Greg is a punk! Yes, he did a lot to earn a star. For THREE days! There are so many kids (like Michael) that were being helpful and nice and a team player before they even knew about the star. Before he knew about the star, he was a jerk. Pushing the council around, writing his team name on everybody else's bunks, etc. And the second Greg didn't get the star, he was like, "I'll show them!" I just don't think you can turn on a good attitude for 2 seconds and expect to be rewarded above all others for it. If he would just continue to be nice and helpful, I'm sure he would get one eventually. The only reason he didn't get one this week is because he was a jerk to (what's his name?) the older guy council member.

Oh, and I changed my mind about Taylor. She's cute and all, and I still love her accent, but what a snob! Twice she made a comment like "beauty queens don't do dishes!" and "pageant girls don't clean off old plates!" And she doesn't fulfill her duties as the cook and encourages her team to slack off. How sad that at 8yrs old she already thinks she's so high and mighty above everyone else. :?

Other than that, the show is still pretty cute and entertaining. I hope the green team isn't last next week! :)
I think the experience will be very exciting for the kids, but ANY mom who lets their daughter [esp. the ones stuck on teams with 15 yo boys] go on the show knowing this would concern me.

:o 8O :o That is terrible!
Am I the only one still watching this show??? It comes on at the same time as lots of other stuff (ie. ANTM), but I guess that's the point of DVR and TIVO!

Taylor is getting worse every week! She is too big for her britches! :?

However, Mallory is so adorable and her skills in the store cracked me up. And it was so sweet when she was sitting with her hands folded, calmly talking to the camera about how kids should not be cussing (like Greg was). I thought, "Aww!! That could be my kid!" :hearts:

Does anyone else wonder where the money goes after they spend it? Do the merchants just keep it all? And do they get paid their amounts ($1, $.50, etc.) every day, or just once per showdown? Not really sure how all of that works.
I do watch the show. Taylor drives me crazy I'm glad they made her cry. 8) I'm glad the little won the money. I think I watch it because I have kids that age, my daughter would have been one of the bossy boats she like things in order, my son now I think would have been home already he loves being at home with friends and all. Warm bed, tolets etc.
And my husband brought up a good point... do these kids shower??

I haven't seen any bathtubs or showers anywhere. :|
I've decided to stop watching this show. It just seems too exploitive to me. All I watched of last night before deciding to not watch anymore, was the scene where they are all celebrating in the saloon. I just had a problem with them taking 'shots' and pretending all their root beers and stuff were real drinks. And the dropping the shots into the beer mug and chugging? It just didn't seem right to me at all.
Barney1 that bothered my husband also, I forgot about that, but it does show you what these kids do see at home or tv. And for the showers you are right, they have to, maybe hopefully just not part of the show, how many days are they out there??? It would be some stinky kids by now.
I continue to be turned off by so many aspects of this show, but I have a hard time letting go. ...like will Greg receive a star? Will I get to see something more controversial to complain about?

I am starting to wish I watched Top Model instead.

Taylor is proud of being a princess, and I was happy to see everyone put her in check. She needed the wakeup call. Power/leadership isn't something I'd give her. Kids like her tend to get worse as they get closer to their teen years. On a positive note, I think she'll be a very pretty adult.

Though I know they signed a contract, I was not thrilled when that one boy stood in front of the cows or whatever. I could not be a cameraman and not stop that. I am so glad he didn't get a gold star. He's a troublemaker in my eyes, and he should be thankful someone cleaned up all the flour they tossed out.
I was soooo happy for Greg. What a good moment. :yay:
He's soo cute! :)

...even happier that Zach won over Taylor. Thought she was the same ol' prissy brat in this episode. Can't help but be sad to see her cry this time though b/c she handled the loss well.

Had a sad moment for Mike to when he lost.
I agree! Yay, Greg! I was so glad he got the star. I don't think he deserved it yet for the 2nd star giving, but I definitely think he deserved it now. And double yay (Yay! Yay!) that Taylor isn't on the counsel anymore! What a brat! :o  I hope her parents watch the show and realize their daughter comes across as a lazy snob. :|

And finally, finally, the green team isn't last! :clappurple:

It was sad about Mike though. I wish a few more people had voted for him, even if Guylan still won. :(
For the record, I read an article about Kid Nation that said the parents felt their kids were portrayed just as shown on tv. I'm mentioning this b/c people seem to defend Taylor a lot on another forum, as if she's only being edited to be a brat, but according to her own parents.... she is what you see.

BTW, I would have chosen the BBQ but knew exactly what Taylor would prefer. Anything for vanity.
It actually seemed like the kids were pretty evenly split on the dental hygiene vs hamburgers (at least if you go by how they edited the shots or the kids' faces).

I was actually starting to like Taylor a little bit better. She's still a brat, but I saw a (slightly) nicer side to her this last episode. I know I said I wasn't going to watch anymore, but I guess I am

I felt bad for Mike when he was voted off. It just reminded me again how young these kids are and how they aren't old enough to handle certain emotions very well. I mean, there weren't any hard feelings or dirty politics with Guylan running and it was just a natural vote-out, but Mike took it SO hard. Poor guy.

Oh, and I kept asking my husband if he thought the kids were 'coached' at all in what they were saying during the political parts. I mean, some of the stuff seemed a little too perfect (not necessarily HOW they said it, but WHAT they said seemed a little off for coming from an 11 year old).
Although Olivia wasn't too pleasant after she lost against Anjay......... he sure got on my nerves this past episode.
Olivia is annoying. I was SO glad she didn't win.
Oh, and I felt so bad for Guylan when he said one of the reasons he was running was because he was homeschooled and would never have the opportunity to be a leader for anything. So sad. That's one reason why I'm not for homeschooling (as a whole--I'm sure there are some instances where it's good)...

I know!! What was with her personal vendetta against Anjay? He seems nice enough. Her only excuse was that "he seems more like a follower than a leader." She just seemed unnecessarily mean and rude to him. I'm glad he won. :clappurple:

Her sister Mallory however, is the most adorable and cutest thing I've ever seen! :hearts: I'm using her to convice Jason that he doesn't really want 3 boys. lol

I agree. The kids are acting like college kids at a frat party. Or old west cowboys in a saloon. Why were children given shot glasses?

I was wondering the same thing. It seems completely bizarre. I've never known any kids to drink soda that way.
Ughhhhhhhhhhh.... I just don't like Taylor now. I could not believe she wanted the vehicles over the fruits&veggies. I am positive if she was on the council, she would have said f&v and then screamed "Deal with it you selfish brats" when people whined. So it was even funnier (laughing at her) when she told Zach (?) that she will never forgive him or whatever she said after the choice was announced.

I'm sure in the end, she will come around and the town will like her but would not believe it's real. She did it to be liked and feels obligated esp. after being outed so many times. While I think obligation and the fear of being an outcast are typical motivators, the other kids are smart enough not to do the things she has. I can see her being the "mean popular girl" at school.

If she was a kid of one of my friends, I'm sure I'd laugh at all the "I'm too good for this or that" comments she makes in a day .....yet she would think I'd be laughing with her and not at her. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if her parents think these little things are funny as well since she is their princess. I've seen parents like that many times. Don't give their kids reality checks.
The boy who strolled around town in all the clothes he bought had me rollin' ......he would be a hit on Beauty and the Geek 10 yrs from now.

I'm glad the focus wasn't on Taylor ........yet again. ...and glad Greg apologized.
I think it'd be really interesting to see what these kids are like in real life. Like in my head I picture them a certain way, and I wonder if they really are that way (mostly big dorks!)

Did they say how the show was casted? Was it auditions or people sent in tapes?

That one kid Alex, one of the younger ones, I don't know why but whenever I see him I just start laughing...he's just funny...
anything special on last nite, our tv went out with the bad weather?
Sorry, I saw bits of it, but barely enough to say I know exactly what happened. I know Alex, the Asian kid got a star.
It was good. The town council read the from the 'journal' and were told they needed to explore and go on a journey. So they put Sophia in charge of the whole town while they were gone. They walked West and met some Indians and were taught life lessons, etc.

So while they were gone life went on at Bonanza. Sophia was in charge and she wouldn't let the arcade open until everyone had done all their chores. And people did them, and said that they didn't mind Sophia telling them what to do and that she was a good Sheriff.

Their challenge was to have each team move a 'homestead' from one location to another. Which consisted of a house, a chicken and an opaca. The challenge prize if they all finished in a hour was a choice between a permanent monument remembering their time at Bonanza, or hot air balloon rides for everyone. Sophia got to choose: she choose the hot air balloons.

So the town coucil decided to choose a 'smart' kid for the gold star because based on what they learned with the Indians, children are the future and will run the world one day, so the council decided that a smart kid should have it so they can go to college and change the world.

Alex got it and he was so funny. He cracks me up. He was saying things like I'll hold on to this star for as long as I can because I think the price of gold is increasing...And he gave a little thank you speech to the town and said thanks, but $20,000 is a lot of money, but not really. And then he called his parents and his mom was like, Is this Alex? Almost like she really didn't know it was him on the phone...
I'm not into reality tv. My life is all the reality I can stand
I'm surprised that I actually like this show. In the beginning I thought it was exploitive and wrong, but as the season has gone on, I've liked it more and more (plus, there's nothing else on at that time!).

I'm glad they picked the balloon ride too. I liked the idea of the monument, but to me I think if they were in a real place, that it would make more sense to pick it, but since it's basically just a set they built for them, who cares if they have a monument to what they did there?

lol, and SOME of the kids are more mature than you'd think. ha ha ha. Some of them are just odd.

You mean Jarod?? He is a weirdo. He seems nice... but he's still strange! :)

And I agree about Alex's mom on the phone. All of the other parents were like, "Ahhhh!! :excited: Baby!!! I missed you!! :yay: " and then Alex's mom, very calmly, said, "Is this Alex?" :? Did she forget what her 9yr old sounded like? It was funny though. Even Alex seemed pretty reserved, so maybe their family is not the type to go all :excited: :yay: about things.

I'm glad Taylor was a little bit better this time. And I was soo happy when Hunter won the star last week. :D
Ha ha ha. Yep, I had Jarod and Michael in mind.

Although Jarod and Alex had one of the funniest conversations (at least to me) this past episode, where they were down with that cow carcass or whatever it was...They were so funny, these little nerdy kids talking about carbon dating...
Jarod: If only we had a carbon dating kit we could tell how old the cow was.
Alex: But we don't have a carbon dating kit...

It was just funny to me, just little boys playing in the dirt with bones but still being all big words and scientific about it.

Oh, and has Jarod was leaving the place with the cow's pelvis, he said Pelvis has left the building...
I have watched this the last few weeks and can't help but think there is a lot of coaching going on with the adults who are on set - face it those cameras don't roll on their own and I think every State requires adult guardians (not necessarily parents) on set when kids are working.
