Does not seem sick at all. Any suggestions? I know all dogs eat amounts and times, differently. But I worry she may start to lose weight or nutrients! |

Violet eats both meals but China my Aussie skips usually one meal a day. If I go in to put down her dinner food and her breakfast is still there I put her dinner food back. They are like we are, sometimes we are hungrier then other times. If she seems ok then I wouldn't worry. |
If she is othrewise seeming normal, I wouldn't worry. There is a gastro bug going around, but it only lasts a few days.
Chewie is a pokey eater too. It is just him. He still has some of his breakfast food in his bowl (just went and looked) and it is 3:30 pm here. I picked it up earlier, and now he is nibbling again. He eats his supper meal faster. He gets 2 cups in the morning, 2 cups at night. He is also a light weight - 17 months and 66 pounds. I would NOT put the whole feeding together. If she is doing well on the food otherwise, I would hesitate to start switching. You may end up with more of a mess! |
I wouldn't put all the food into one meal. Two smaller meals is safer to feed a breed like the OES because of bloat risk.
Fifty one pounds doesn't sound like she's starving. My first sheepie was only about 65 full grown and used to leave his morning food alot. A dog will not starve himself if food is available. If there are no other problems, poops good, no vomitting, acting normal, I wouldn't be too worried. But if you are going to the vet anyway, bring in a stool sample and urine just to be sure. My dog tends to not eat his food when he doesn't feel well. And if I force him it makes it worse. Dogs seem to know how to treat themselevs sometimes |
Thanks every one! She is very normal otherwise, so I guess I will just keep feeding her the same! I am also wondering if she is done growing? Very small for a sheepie, but that is ok with me! She was also the runt of the liter....The other day she was playing with 2 OES, one was 2 yrs the other was 5yrs. Both were boys and at least 90 pds and a 1/2 foot taller then her! Allie is 18 months. Dont they grow until about 2yrs old? |
My grown OES, Pearl, does not eat much at all. She is on the thin side, except when she is full-coated and looks FAT... If you are still concerned after taking her in for a checkup, maybe you should try a little canned food mixed with the dry. It seems to make Pearl eat more -- |
Our Sami is not a big eater , she seems to eat the minimal amount needed her mother had a small frame and I think Sami is this was. Now Blue likes to eat WOW the max amount for sure. |
my boy who is 13 months 80pounds doesn't like eating durning the day exceptfor his treats but my other 2 eat once a day, my daytona who is 12 never cared about eating ubtil she was 3 and till another one came into the house now she eats too fast, love your pics |
Nigel was eating 1 1/2 - 2 cups. 3 times a day. Today he doesn't want to finish lunch. I feel like he might be sad. We had to put our Std Poodle to sleep on Monday, and she was the only other dog we had. I contacted the local OES rescue to see if they had a 3-5 yr old female, but haven't heard back yet. He has no food competition now, and it's been so hard on me losing 2 dogs within 6 months of each other.
I sure don't want him to be a fussy eater...he has been so good until this week. Seems suspicious to me. I am also not sure when he should go to 2 feedings a day. |
Well I did give Allie 1 small spoonful of moist food in her morning bwol and she ate it up within 5 minutes!! So maybe she was sick of her dry ole food:) I will try again at night! Thanks again for all the help! |

Careful. Once you start giving her soft, you'll be doing it forever! Bear got a taste for it from stealing Lucy's food and now, if he doesn't get to finish Lucy's food, he goes insane and, for no reason, will smack Clyde and bark in his face-- like it's poor Clyde's fault. Clyde is always like, "Hey, what the heck, man? What's your problem?" |
Oh my god! How funny! Poor Clyde! Allie did have moist about 6 months ago, for a antibiotic she had to take....This morning I gave her 1 VERY small spoon size and mixed it up with the dry. I guess I dont mind doing that forever for her, as long as she does not demand more then that! She will still get the dry, to help keep her teeth clean |
I'm glad she's eating with the moist food added. Barney goes through phases where he won't eat much at all and then other phases where he'll gobble everything down in 2 seconds. He weighs 90+ pounds, so I'm not worried that he'll waste away!
One thing I do, though, if he gets that way for more than a few days at a time is just sprinkle some shredded parmesan cheese on top of the kibble. Smells better than moist food and he LOVES it. |
I put George's breakfast out first thing in the morning after potty time, and he usually doesn't even nibble on it until at least ten...and I put it out at six thirty. Some days he doesn't even finish it before dinner time. His evening meal he will eat much quicker, usually in two visits to the food bowl. He has always been this way, and I haven't worried too much. Twiced he has puked in the morning, the yellow vomit stuff ( I checked that out on here first time it happened, and I guess its from an empty tummy), so I do try to encourage him to eat at least a nibble, but he is rather stubborn |
I would be very careful giving her moist unless you plan to switch over for good. Dogs are smart and once they figure out that if they don't eat they will get the "good stuff" you will have a real problem on your hands.
If you have no reason to believe she has a health issue I would stick to putting the dry down two times a day. If she is hungry she will eat. Dogs don't always have the same eating schedule that we think they should have. For years I free fed Tasker which ment he had food available at all times. Some days he barely touched it, other days he ate like a pig. |
I agree totally with Tasker's Mom. I would do 2 meals a day, and adding moist food is asking for trouble, as far as I'm concerned. They learn real quick, and then it is difficult you travel etc...for feeding time.
61 pounds is not big, and 3 cups might be a bit more than she needs. Bosley took a really big drop at 15 to 18 months old...from 5 1/2 cups a day to about 3 and 3/4 cups, now...And he is 69 pounds and very active. I would feel her bones...You should be able to feel her ribs and backbone without pressing on her. If you have to press to feel anything, she is too fat. If you can easily feel each and every bone, she is too thin....and take it from there. |
If Alli is a small bitch and is 18 months old , than 3 cups of food is a little too much, Just give her 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup at night, and see if that goes better Edy |
Bella is 15 months old and small as well, about 62 lbs. I give her 1 1/4 cups am and pm. She is extremely active, playing hard at the dog park almost every day. Sometimes she skips a meal and does not eat at all or only part of the food. I do mix a very small amount of wet food with her dry. I used to worry as well, but she is active, healthy, a perfect weight for her frame. I think she is just smarter than me.......knowing when to quit!
Forgot to log in.....Mary, Mom of Bella and JoJo |
I have to agree with the dogs being smarter and knowing when to quit. Miley is about 16 months an is 65lbs. We average about 2 cups for breakfast and supper but the dog food is always available. Our vet suggeted putting x amount of food and putting the dish down and pick up after 10-15 minutes. I admit I don't pick up the dish but I do use as a general rule of thumb to monitor portion size. Miley goes throught phases where she does not eat. Then a couple weeks later she makes up for it. She does have a habit of carrying her bowl when hungry.
At her 1 yr check-up the vet was happy about her weight and muscle tone so I stopped worrying. |
How true! If only us humans would stop eating when we are full! That is my problem, love food!
Well I have been giving Allie a spoonful of moist in her 1- cup of dry, 2 times a day. She is eating again, actually seems to look forward to it. I really think she was bored with her dry ole Nutro food! It is not a hardship for me to buy a moist can of food a week...... She is 51pds, and VERY active. PLays during the day with the neighbor dog, plus 2 walks a day. One in the morning, before breakfast, then one long one in the evening. So for that reason, I do want her to eat at least 2 cups a day. I was feeding her 3 cups (1-1/2 each time) but as others have mentioned, may have been to much for her size. Thanks again everyone for your insights! Just love this forum |
Chris you also can give her some cottage cheese or tuna in her food in stead of canned dog food. Edy |
Edy, I always wondered about giving people food. I notice alot of our members give Yogurt, tuna, chicken...Cheese. I just wonder if she will start to beg for people food then? My parents Labs were feed people food and it was HORRIBLE trying to eat at their house! Always begging! |
You can keep her from begging when you give her treats away from the dinner table, mine never got just stuff , while we were eating and they leave us alone at dinner as they know. When the Pizza man comes, I have to lock them away because they know they get the crust when we are done and it is soooooooo very tempting for them. They get the crust away from any food surface. it works, so don't deny her cheese or whatever other healthy human food Edy |

What makes the difference is in feeding "people food" ONLY at the dog's mealtimes and in their own bowl...never from YOUR plate or during your mealtimes. That way, they don't really realize that yogurt etc are not "dog food"! |
