We think she now up to 60 lbs at 6 months! way to much weight. So her food is going to be reduced to 1 cup AM and PM with a hand full of cut up carrots. When she goes to the nationals she can be disquilfied with so much weight. I DO NOT OVER FEED HER. It does not come from but the other half. If we have a few pcs of left over steak he cuts it up for all of them, also a hot dog ect. |

I'm sorry Little Darcy is hurt. I hope she heals fast. 2 cups of food for a growing puppy does not seem like enough but I suppose every dog is different. |
If you aren't overfeeding her, I'd definitely suggest a trip to the vet to check her thyroid otherwise she may keep ballooning. |
As soon as Darcy gets healed you MUST start giving her the proper exercise she needs. This may sound harsh but it's time for tough love now. Stop blaming your husband for the abundance of snacks she's getting. You both need to understand that your breeder has entrusted you as Darcy's guardian and Darcy has a job to do. Not only are you putting her health in jeopardy, you are impeding your breeders chances of winning in the ring.
Two cups of food is not a lot for such a young dog. Those of us who have fought weight problems ourselves will tell you it's the between meal snacks that pack on the pounds. You just don't realize how many calories are taken in. Between you and your husband, start a diet log for Darcy and write down every morsel that goes in her mouth. No cheating! You're doing this for her own good. The suggestion about the thyroid test is a good one as well. Our hypothyroid rescue Sassy has gone from 99 lbs. to 81 lbs. in less than eight months. I think you'll find that with Darcy, exercise is the key. |

Hope Darcy feels better soon!

Man... I Gotta start snacking something else... No wonder people at work look at me funny. So many calories! |
Well Nita You know I have been fighting a battle with Richard about the food he gives the dogs. Yes Flannigan does have a thyroid proublem and the meds are doing wonders. Soon Richard will be going back to work, ( I HOPE) I will have more controll of what they get. AS YOU WELL KNOW I am not in good shape to run Darcy around the yard. I can,t see putting up a fence for her and have to take it down in a month or 2. To much money for that. New home WILL have a large fenced yard.If we get one.
I find your words harsh as I am doing my best due to what we have gone through to the point that I have asked Richard if he wants to separate , give Madeline Darcy back, and have Flannigan and Cinde put to sleep.. This has not been easy here for us and most of you know it. If feeding the dogs can cause us to separate after 30 yrs of marriage well let it be. I have reached the end of my rope. I have been dragged 3 time in one week and have cuts bruses ect all over. Maybe your right Nita we need to give up Darcy , with a sadden heart and tears, Goodnight, Deana |
Whoooo, Nellie.
Deana, we all know the trials you have been through lately..And we feel for you, honestly. Darcy is a growing pup, who needs proper food, excercise and training. You need to know that, and make arrangements that she gets them. A 5/6 month old pup is very active. By not allowing her the excercise she needs, and the proper nutrition that a growing puppy requires, you are doing her a disservice. She will not grow into the healthy, happy, well-balanced pup that you so want to have. You come here for advice, and it is given to you. I am not sure how much you are understanding, but it has been mentioned by more than Nita, and in different ways. Please...we are trying to help you and Darcy to stay together, but if you are unable to provide for her, then perhaps she should be in a home that can.....This might not be the right time for you to have a puppy to raise. They are very draining on nerves, strength, patience and finances. |
No answer! I measure everything the dogs get. I have no controll what Richard sneaks to them except now I refuse to buy any more. Nothing except vegies. I am not going to play God to him. Maybe if we lose her due to his giving them to many snacks. WELL !!! I use marrow bones to keep then busy if we go out. I fill them with reduced fat peanut butter and freeze them, Madeline thinks thats OK. So now what do I do? |
By the way Ron, Madeline warned me about the milkbones. We break then into 1/4s so that can not do to bad once a day. |

I feel as though many of us give suggestions, but they're ignored. If you can't take Darcy on a leash because you can't handle her, put her on a tie out and let her walk around with you in the yard. Toss a ball to her-- anything. She wouldn't be such a ball of energy if she could expend some of the energy. The great thing with dogs now is that there are so many things you can do and places you go with them. The options for exercise and fun are endless! To me, every story I hear about Darcy sounds like she is happy normal pup. They're spazzes at that age. I don't mean to bring this up to upset you, but you often compare her to Fergie who, from what you have said and others have told me, was never normal and didn't have that endless run of energy that normal pups do because of her sickness. I always kind of feel like poor little Darcy is always in trouble for being a normal pup and it makes me sad for her. I know you don't want to give her up but making excuses won't solve the problem. I wouldn't consider asking your husband not to overfeed her "playing God." Aren't you home all day with him anyway? Just watch him and explain to him how she's getting too fat and you won't be able to show her anymore. Or have Madeline do it. She'll probably be glad to explain it to him. |
Having her overweight is not just about not being able to show her. It is important for dogs to be at the right weight, especially at a young age as you can seriously effect the way they grow. Plus it's hard on their heart, lungs, etc. At her age, her metabolism should be high. Usually you will have a problem putting weight on them at this age. You will probably have to cut back her food when she is an adult. Green beans are good fillers, as well as rice cakes. |
I ca't beleave the reply's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't you think I have tried all of the things you asked me to try. She is down to 1 cup AM and 1 PM. All others are vegies I had asked Madeline. I guess I will have to hide any treats we have !!!! I can be in the LR and they all will walk in with a dogie treat. I did not even hear him give them to them, and feel he has to learn to stop.. I do not give them snacks. Just vegies, I do have to say I use to give the snacks to all of them. But for a very long time I have stopped. It is so sad that we have no dog parks to let them run. Yes I do compare Fergie many times, and I know she was ill, and had not the rumping around that Darcy has. I also know the Darcy will grow out of this stage in about 6 months and calm down (some). And if Richard gets back to work they will not get any treats.AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only thing I can not do is get her out more. I just can not walk like she should. I have been trying to think of ways to get her more. If I tie her in the back yard She goes nuts with all the wild ann. out in the back. I am not rejecting any help you give and welcome any thing. but I do have limets as to what I can do by my strenth!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please do not post to this anymore. Iwill not respond. I will sign off the board on this subject. When you walk a mile in my shoes then give me your advice. Reguards, Deana |

6 months -- you think? I am still waiting for Maggie to slow down and she is nearly 3 years old. |

I find the biggest difference in 6 month old Clyde and Clyde now (as far as energy demands) is that now when he gets all fired up, I have a 100 pound dog that wants to play rather than a 50 or 60 pounder! |
