Too Cold for a Puppy?

Hi,
I have a 12 weeks old "oes" his bedroom is the conservatory with one of our old duvea(can't spell it so bedspread), but the temperature is dropping down to 8 degree's of a night.
will he be o.k with this or should he come inside the house?

thanks for any help.

regards Joe

I would not leave a puppy out in that cold a temperature.
I second Taskers MOM reply...OES puppies ( and adult dogs) belong with your family in the house....
If the actual place (inside) you keep the dog is colder than the freezing point (around 32 F), I'd find a different place until it gets warmer. It would be cruel otherwise. However, I don't think a puppy can handle even those lows. How about a crate inside your house or room?

Congrats on the new dog!
Which room is the conservatory? :) Is that inside the house? or a separate building outside? Is it heated? The puppy needs to be inside where there is heat with the warm bedspread to snuggle into so he won't get too cold. :)
I am wondering if you are talking about degrees C or degrees F. Since I saw that your post was from England? 8 degrees C is is about 45 degrees F for those of us on the other side of the pond.
I wouldn't leave a puppy out in 45 degree weather either, but that is just me.
yes in your money it would be 45f sorry for confusion.
he has been in the conservatory for 4 weeks and is getting trained to go into the garden from there to do his "bussiness" so did not want to change things , but it is getting colder and I am therefore consirned.

he seems to be built for the cold with his lovely coat but then i think he is only a baby so i am confused as to what to do.

from thw comments so far it seems the sensible thing is to bring him into the house.
thanks joe
Twelve weeks old is a baby. And you are at a very important socialization time. He should spend some time in the house with you so he can learn how to interact with the family. Maybe you can keep him confined to the kitchen area? But to continue to keep him leaving alone in a secluded room away from the family and human contact is not a good idea. It will impact his behavior greatly in a negative way. Sheepies are a breed that definately NEED to be around people to develop into a healthy dog.

Don't mean to critisize you or accuse you of anything but I'm upset a little puppy that young is spending so much time alone and secluded. Just my thoughts.
Hi Joe.

Welcome to the forum. Yes, it's probably getting a bit nippy for your puppy to be outside for any length of time. At this age, they are mini metabolic machines, and just do not have enough fat on their bodies to protect them from the elements, even though their lovely fur coats would suggest otherwise.

I also agree that a puppy needs alot of interaction with humans at this age, as it is peak bonding time, so if you could have the dog with you more often, that would be great for both of you. :)

I think I may have come across a bit harsh in my response to this post and wanted to aplologize to the original poster. I didn't mean to insult anyone's "parenting" skills. Sorry if I came across that way.

Our Sami would rather be inside with her people, she goes and hangs but she is in and out all day, the pup is 10 weeks and loves it out side and when the door is shut he just lays there soaking everything in. Sami now you shut the door barks to come in BUT will not bark to go out? I shut the door because pup to busy enjoying everything he forgets to pee.
Doggy door soon can not wait. I will not fill like at doorman anymore.
I guess the first thing that pops in my mind is (and not necessarily specific to this poster but it does apply), why would you want a dog if you couldn't keep it near you? I think it's one thing if you have working dogs that are outside dogs but, for a pet, I wouldn't want him anywhere but as part of the family!
What am I missing here? Why is everyone so quick to judge that this pup is so secluded and not around humans. The intial post read the puppy's bedroom was in the conservatory. How does that interpret to the family not bonding or socializing with it.

I agree!! Panda sleeps outside in the winter time...the low is around 45 degrees..she has a doghouse with a regular blanket and a down bed....half the time she sleeps on the grass....not even IN her dog house.

As we know, I LOVE my dog and Panda is completely socialized....just because your animal does not sleep with you, does not mean that it is not loved and well cared for. People that have children, dont have the kids sleep with them...and for the most part, they do okay...lol....

And as much as I humanize my dog....in reality, she is a sheepdog and as far as i know, herd sheep....OUTside...in all kinds of weather...and sometimes, would have to sleep out there!
I do think a puppy is a bit different though, I still think it's a bit cold for a puppy. An adult dog in full coat no, but a puppy I would want to keep in a warmer space til full grown.
Yes, Ginny... I agree on that too...Panda slept in the laundry room off of the garage...with all of that stuff..ie bedding and pillows.....
It is funny how each dog/puppy is different. Sami loves being with her people if I shut the door she will bark and bark to get in, if i leave it open she putts around outside just DO NOT CLOSE THAT DOOR MOM :!: Blue now who is 11 weeks loves it out side everyone comes in, he lays out there just taking it all in. I will shut the door and not a care in the world. I was steam cleaning my couchs yesterday when finished went looking for Blue underbeds, behind tolets, closets everywhere..... hmmmm outside and sure enough soaking up the sun. Dave puts him out for a pee 3:00 am and Blue will lay out there not wanting to come in, Dave in his underwear getting a puppy, me pretending to sleep so I did not have to get him.
Thanks BP71 and Darcy,

I get up around 6. am and put the dog to his bed around 12p.m
being retired we get a lot of play time in during the day.
So yes he is very, very socialized.
And you are right I never said the puppy was alone during the day.
I thank you for your postings.
