I bought alot of the gadgets out the for child proofing my house( outlet covers, cupboard locks,GATES, GATES, gates ..................................
Heart (12 weeks...no,no 13 weeks)seems to be very curious about wires, table cloths (trying to pull it down off the table, along with my centerpiece, ) ANd Going into ANY room I am not in at the time, to get into anything I don't want her to get into. ..(hope that makes sense.) |
We close the doors to as many rooms as possible - especially the bathroom door. I am fortunate enough to have three door going across the house that allows me to keep the dog out of the living room and dining room. I open up the hall door when I get home and he can only be in the front rooms once we are home. Take everything off the countertops - they are notorious counter surfers.
Crating is always the safest and easiest but even if they graduate out it is always good to take precautions like I mentioned above. |
Hi
We've just got another puppy (Dave) and are quite lucky as Molly (aged 2) keeps an eye on him! I have child locks on the cupboard door and had a basket (you can fit it to the wall) for my husband to put his bits and bobs in without fear....the chewing of the bluetooth didn't go down too well! We also have a massive crate for Dave to sleep in at night and when we go out with Molly. Other than that we just try and shut the doors so he is in a two room radius! He's such a little thief though...socks, slippers, shoes, toys, papers...i even found the tv remote in his duvet this morning! You've got to love their little bouncy ways though...! |
After you clear everything that is obvious, get down on your hands and knees and check things out from a puppy's perspective. I'm sure you will come up with a few more things.
Mostly, just having Rufus in your sight and keeping a close eye on him is the best. They will still roll over and be chewing on the corner of the couch, or rungs of your wooden chair - if you let them. A quick "no" whenyou catch him, then a quick substitution with a proper toy will help. We have no trouble with any of them and counter surfing (except Maggie the coonhound, who lived her 1st year outside chained up! We are working on her - harder with her old habits and ability to easily climb trees )) Starting with a puppy, never allow him to jump up - on you, the company, a counter. Being super vigilant and having him always in sight will help avoid this ever becoming a problem. If you are going to be away for a bit, make sure there is nothing he can get on the counter or table if he were to jump up. This is a "self-rewarding" habit - the dog gets some yummy thing when they jump, so they keep repeating it. |
Mine oes love the bathroom, I went looking for paper towels none in the cupboard found them both outside and all over the place so bathroom always closed they are very good at cupboards. Counter surving mine girl figured that out when I made doggy cookies and talk about GAS. They also like shoes kids/ friends learnt to put them up real HIGH or they are late for school and getting home on time, being grounded because of a dog not fun. Husband not learnt always late. Bounce sheets and j cloths are the things I have to keep an eye on they love them and I do not know why, you do learn to be a better house keeper with pups. AND the fluff from dryer |
The best advise for safe guarding your house is keep everything put away. When they are puppies, and some never grow out of it, are counter surfers. Of course shoes, remotes, cell phones, toilet paper ect are very tempting for them. Sheepdogs are very smart. One of our members, Pepsi's Mommy, has a sheepdog that can unlock doors. If I remember right, I think it is Pepsi and I thing Rags encourages him. lol They also both like to swim in their pool. Those two sheepies keep Elissa on her toes. lol
Anyway, they are a joy to have around. My Aussie, China, loves cake when it is cooling. My OES, Violet, I really don't have problems with her snatching things that she shouldn't. Of course she is almost five years old now...but there was time! Good luck and just enjoy them. |
PICK UP YOUR SHOES! Lock them away!
14 pairs of shoes later....... |
Wynn - but it was ONLY 1 shoe from each pair, right???? |

You LAUGH, but your puppy's grandmother did that to me the night before a job interview. One of every presentable shoe I owned. Didn't chew much before then (she was two years old by then), don't think she has chewed anything since. It's the deceptively sweet and docile ones who catch you off guard Kristine & Grandma Coco (the devil made me do it!) |
All we ever used was baby gates to keep Edgar out of places he wasn't supposed to be. That and doors closed. As for the kitchen he isn't allowed in there so there has been no counter surfing yet. |
