Eye GUNK! yucky yucky yucky

Hi all,

Nelson has this pretty gross eye goop, it's custy and hard to get out. It always takes me awhile to get it too because I have to lull him to sleep in my arms before I can start trying to get it out. Anyone have any suggestions? Our vet said just a warm washcloth and gentle hands, I can do this but just checking to see if there might be any miracle solution.

Of course whenever I do this I just breathe in the puppy smell, so it may not be too bad, it's just a little gross. I guess that's the way with babies.

If our experience is worth anything, if you attend to the gunk before it hardens, it's a much easier job. If the gunk is NOT in the eye, but is on the outside of the lid, a very gentle fingernail can "scrape" it away. Wash up first (and after), of course.

Good luck!

Thanks Ron! Yeah weve just been softening the gunk first with a warm rag then gently scraping away but Nelson doesn't really enjoy this.

Thank you!
I totally agree with Ron's suggestion on getting out the "crusties." I do it everyday with Guinevere, and believe it or not, it does get easier as you keep doing it on a daily basis. It sounds like yours is a puppy, which is a good thing, because the things you turn into routine now will become exactly that to them as they grow older and I think you will find that they get used to it, if not ever really "enjoy" it.

You didn't mention your puppy's name, or yours for that matter. We would love to know! We are a friendly bunch here, so please feel free to register and maybe even put up a picture of your sheepie (one of the coolest things about this forum - thanks to Ron's hard work!). You are welcome here either way!

One other thing that you might want to start doing if your sheepie is still a puppy is to get them used to having their paws groomed. I had a lot of trouble with my last OES, Merlin, on this point. But with Guinevere I started from the time she was very young, just working my way down to her front paws when petting her while she was relaxed and laying at my feet while watching TV or something. Again, she didn't like it at first, but eventually I very gently would just stroke her paws, and then eventually kinda hold them in my hand and just rub her pads very gently so that she would know that it was a good thing when the time came to have to get out those nasty matts that we all know eventually come as part of the package!

Hope this helps!
Cheers!

I'm Alex and the eye goober is Nelson. Every other day or so we sit down with him and after he calms down work the eye goop out which has been working but does take awhile! As for Nelson's paws I (as the result from advice from here) pet his paws and ears all the time, which he doesn't mind at all.

I'll see about the pictures, I just love looking at everyone's but I wanted to wait until the next snow to get a really good one. Which, by the way, Nelson is a nut in the snow! We recently took him up to my grandparent's (where our other dog, Mac who is a golden retriever now lives) and Mac and Nelson were just precious together. Mac is pushing 130 lbs and is about 5 1/2 right now so he had this "oh-please-not-a-puppy-" look on his face while Nelson LEAPED and springed all around him! It was a site to behold!

Alex and Nelson -

I'm so sorry - you DID mention your names! I don't know what I was thinking! Anyway, welcome! And we look forward to the next snow for a good picture of your cute boy.

Cheers!
