question re:hairspray the movie

I have not seen the movie Hairspray yet, but I was wondering about the character that John Travolta plays. What is the significants of having a man dressed as a woman and playing the part of the Mother? Is it the same in the play? I am just curious.

In the original movie (with Ricki Lake) the mom was played by a man (a very large man) and the same with the broadway version. I'm assuming because the play and the remade movie were remakes, they just went with what worked in the first one. I don't think there's any 'significance' or reason that they chose a man to play the mom.
I think in the original movie the role was played by a famous drag queen...so it makes a little more sense...at least in that movie.

Good 'ole Divine. Sure miss those days... Keeping a man in drag for that role in the broadway show & the new movie was definitely a tribute to John Waters.

I got to see John Waters speak once at a gay & lesbian film festival in Philly. He was a blast.

He's awesome! He's definitely on my list of people I'd love to meet someday.

A funny, somewhat related aside, my dad married a woman a few years ago whose adopted brother looks JUST like John Waters. He walked into the church and I got all excited-- I was sure it was him. My step-brother is a drag queen so it all made sense. But, alas, I was disappointed to find out he was not the real John Waters. He just worked for the electric company, lol.
I'm sure he's electric, alright!!!!
