Noobies to OES' looking for some advice

hello everyone, my girlfriend and i are looking for another puppy this time we know we want an OES ive loved them since i was a kid and jess just likes 'em... we current own an Alaskan Malamute called Diesel! were looking for a friend for him and thought another large breed dog would be ideal... theres a few questions we'd like to ask if thats ok.

1) what are OES like with other large breed dogs(can they share back seats of cars and living spaces like the mals pack background)?
2) do OES get the "wet dog smell"? (as Mals dont really have an odour)
3) how do OES fair with BARF diets?
4) what sort of instincts do OES have? (Mals have a natural instinct to Dig and Pull, Yes the garden does look like the surface of the moon)
5) what is their intelligence like?
6) is there anything else we should know?

sorry to 'compare' so much to mals but thats the only base whe have for a dog we know the OES are going to be a completely different experience.

hope to find out more soon thanks in advance

Rich, Jess and Diesel

Hi Rich Jess & Diesel. Welcome to the forum, there is a ton of information to read on this breed, so spend time reading around and googling for information and of course a wealth of OES lovers to answer any questions you may have. :D

1) what are OES like with other large breed dogs(can they share back seats of cars and living spaces like the mals pack background)?
2) do OES get the "wet dog smell"? (as Mals dont really have an odour)
3) how do OES fair with BARF diets?

5) what is their intelligence like?
6) is there anything else we should know

1. fine and yes although it can get squishy.
2 They smell like a wet wool jumper when wet
3 Barf diet is wonderful for the breed, popular here too in OZ.
4 OES are herders so be prepared to be rounded up in play, with the occassional nip (that has to be trained out of them when young) and they are also very much Velcro dogs too.
5 Clownish but still smart, do well in obedience and agility always the peter pan of breeds, but loveable, can act dumb, but are smart 8) .
6. Coat manitenance is high but you have a Mal so you are half way there.

Best wishes with your decision, do research though as there is health issues that can be a problem in the breed and always if you are thinking of one, buy from an ethical registered breeder that health tests their breeding stock.
Oh by the way Lisa is so right. GET a good breeder, no puppy mills. You don't know what you will end up with. PLEASE call ask for references from others. Ect. Just don't take them at their word. ASK ASK ASK!!!!!
You are in the UK and we have lots of members who can help you find a GOOD breeder! SO all you UK members help this couple out :D :D :D :yay:

By the way you are welcome but never be afraid to ask anything, These are great people like no other group you will ever meet. Lots of us have called each other by phone and many go and visit. Hope you have a great time here.
Here is a link for you to 4 OES clubs in the UK, plus it lists a few breeders on this link also, scroll down and you will find them. Contact the secretaries of each club and there might even be someone close near you, you can go and see and experience the breed.

Most OES clubs worldwide have a breeder referall and puppy lists.

Forgot to say too they can also have selective hearing, they can ignore you totally and think there invisible

Oh and jumpers as well, be prepared to be jumped on, again another trait better tackled and trained out of them when youngsters before they become large flying fuzz balls. 8O

Late maturing too, puppyhood seems to last a long long time. 8)
Hi Rich, Jess & Diesel,
We are down in Kent UK, welcome to the board! Just wanted to mention OES don't shed as such but the grooming is alot because of the long hair. As for breeders, check the kennel club site and the one lisoes recommended.

Getting a good breeder is ESSENTIAL. Expect to pay £800-£1000 just for the dog.
It's nice you are doing your research, you will find lots of help here :D

All excellent advice.

Just wanted to mention, if you get your OES from a good breeder, temperament should not be a problem, in which case they get along great with other dogs. But a friend of mine has malamutes (I've gone to weight pulls with him and really love the breed; powerful, majestic) and I've been told in no uncertain terms (I was holding dogs) that they are less certain when it comes to tolerating other dogs.

The boys tend to be better than the girls in this regard. A malamute bitch fight is pretty much to the death if their stories are to be believed. So you're ahead of the game there. And it should be a different story if you get a puppy and raise her with Diesel. But I do know a number of Mals take an instant and deepseated dislike to an adult OES. A friend of mine was in the best in show ring a couple of weekends ago when the Mal in front of her whipped around and tried to remove her dog's nose. Thankfully no contact and her OES is rock solid and never moved a muscle, so no problem. Just something to keep in mind.

Oh, and the typical Malamute is more independant than the typical OES. Both are too smart for their own good.

wow what a load of replies... were being carefull this timewe have been caught out with diesel think he was from a farm... too inexperienced for own good i think there was a lot of hoo haa about whether he was a pedigree mal or not we think hes got some sibe in him somewhere in his line but no papers ETC... we dont care really hes like a mal and certainly has mal traits but at the end of the day we may have been caught out but he's OURS and we love him as much as we possibly could!! we being a little more carefull this time and doing a shed load of research thank you all again for your replies if we think of anything else then we know where to come
Welcome from Colorado. Sheepdogs are great, and the advice on this forum is great. Lots of cumulated knowlege. Just one comment. The hearding thing can bother other dogs. Bella, 10 months, thinks that she should be able to herd Luka, a 5 year old Newfoundland. Luka puts up with it for a while but then lets Bella know that he is the boss and then she quits. But they still love to play together. The other thing is be prepared for your sheepdog to try and train you too.
job done went and got one lol called him alfie if i can figure out how to throw images up i will
Look forward to seeing the lil guy. Congratulations too. :D Love his name Alfie so cute.

It sounds like it could be that your files may be too big? If that's the case, it'll start the process but time out. Try shrinking the file and see if that helps.
ok got the picture thing working!! uploaded a couple of alfie just said i was waiting for Admin approval... do the photos display in "my photos" section before they are authorised or after?

not long now untill you meet him lol hes 9 weeks old tomorrow
I just clicked on your camera icon, what a cutie, love his wicked cheeky eye patch. :D

boo only one showed :( i swear i tried to upload more!! ill get the hang of it soon
Don't forget you need to place each pic into an album, one at a time, after the upload finishes. You have to first hit the continue button after the "## uploads were successful" screen, then put each into an album and hit continue.

I like the first one! ;)
Hi :D , Alfie sure is a cutie
just bought some hair clippers for alfie!! i uploaded anothe pic but its being sorted by mods and im having trouble putting more on my new computer... but as soon as i sort it out then ill post em up!!
That is too funny, we have another member here named Richy (from Glaskow, UK), and he has a sheepdog puppy named Alfie, too. But his Alfie is about 6 months old now... I think he looks similar to your Alfie, too.... How cool!

Welcome to the forum... the pic of Diesel with Alfie is adorable!
