We are now making the adjustment from an outside puppy to an indoor puppy. Our ambition is to crate train her for during the day when at work & night until we are sure she is housebroken. She hates the crate. We put toys and a filled Kong for both during the day and night. Does anyone have any suggestions on house training her quickly or making her crate time more tolorable? Thank you! |

Hi blong2001,
Welcome to the forum. A lot of us here on the forum have went with crate training and others have offered great suggestions. Above use the search feature and type in crate or potty training it might help. In the night time, if you don't already have the crate in the bedroom it might help her if she is with you. During the day, maybe a t.v. or stereo, or even better maybe a neighbor can come over and see her for a bit. Good luck. Please tell us more about your sheepie girl. Stormi and co. |
Welcome to the club of uprights owned by an OES!
Lennon hated his crate too, he barked and barked and barked and barked.... well, you get the idea. Being in the crate has to be fun. Start by leaving the door open and allowing her to go in and out at will on a weekend when you can watch her. Put yummy things inside and praise her a lot when she comes in and then say a command like "Crate!" or "Go to sleep!". When she gets out, make absolutely no fuss about it, that way she'll get it, it's fun to go in but not to go out. Then you can start by closing the door while sitting next to the crate so she can get confident that there's nothing wrong. Again, play a lot with her when she's inside. Then, you can leave for sort periods of time and then come back. She'll get all exited, so pay no attention to her until she calms down, then praise her. When you are gone, make shure you leave the TV or radio on so she feels company, you don't want to develop any anxiety on her. One last thing... Puppies cannot hold it for very long, even when crated. Rule of thumb is 1 hour per month of age until 1 year, so plan quick trips from you or a neighbor to help your puppy go potty during the day. Good luck! |
I am sure she hates her crate because she's lived in one for 4 months! I agree with the suggestions from Saulmr - I think you will find an improvement if you follow those suggestions. The other thing you could try is putting a sheet over the crate - sometimes that makes them feel more secure. Try moving the crate to a different location - maybe closer to you - particularly at night. Try and stick with the crate training - I have found it to be much easier for housebreaking - and you ensure she is kept safe when you're not there to keep an eye on her.

roofus was an outdoor puppy too when i got him! the adjustment from outdoor dog to indoor dog was a big one!!
crate training was easy for him. First I found out what his favorite, most yummy treat in the world was (happens to be pupcorn). Any time I put him in his crate (and I never EVER force him to go in or use the crate as a punishment) I throw in at least five pupcorns (hey, 3 calories apiece!!). He ambles in, I tell him what a good, smart boy he is, and shut the crate. Then I pretty much ignore him, he's not there. He has tons of toys and bones in there, so I know he won't get bored. I make sure he is crated at least ten minutes before I leave, and I don't let him out of the crate immediately when I get home, either. It's not a big deal for him to get let out, but if he enters the crate on his own, he is the SMARTEST most BESTEST BABY in the world and gets tons of treats. He only gets his special pupcorn when he enters the crate. As far as the barking thing, all I did was squirt him with a water bottle. I didn't even look at him. Said NO, squirted him, continued watching tv or whatever else I was doing. Sometimes I would be squirting him for fifteen minutes (he likes water, unfortunately). But the suddeness and the firm no seem to have had a positive effect on his crate training. And if I wasn't in the same room, I just ignored him. let him bark his head off! I've got nine cockatiels, he just can't compete noise-wise! |
What has my Miss Cassie been missing...what's pupcorn? |
Hi Cassie's Momma,
My puppers love Pupcorn. It is a dog flavored snack that sells at places like Petsmart. I haven't seen it anywhere else. What will they think of next to get us crazy animal lovers to buy for our loved 4 legged kids. LOL Stormi and co. |
yeah, comes in like three flavors, cheese, peanut butter, and beef. basically it's popcorn for dogs. i buy the generic pupcorn they sell at pet supplies plus, it's $3 a pound and i get a couple pounds at a time. it goes pretty quick here! |
