To answer your primary question, once you've found a breeder you need to pick your puppy. Here is How to pick the right puppy from oes.org
As for how to find a breeder in your area, you want to start with the OESCA Breeder Referral List Specifically, these are the closest to you in order of distance from Southeastern MA: OES Breeders in Massachusetts OES Breeders in Connecticut OES Breeders in New Hampshire OES Breeders in New York OES Breeders in New Jersey |
The MOST IMPORTANT thing about picking a puppy is getting a good breeder. Please only buy your puppy from a reputable breeder. The extra time and money you spend now will benefit you in years to come.
As for markings, I put no stock in markings. Health is number one, personality number 2. Whatever markings they have is what they have. It's like picking a date based on skin color. |
I agree with what has been said here, puppy health & temperament should always outweigh physical markings IMO.
You can see eye color fairly early, so I'm not sure where you are getting your info from in that regard. If you put a lot of emphasis with your request of wanting your puppy to look a certain way with a reputable breeder, you might get an ear load. Most likely you will not be able to pick out which pup you would like either, although your options may be better if you plan to show your pup. If markings are that important to you, it might make sense for you to attend some dog shows to see potential breeding stock of the kind of dog you like, and go from there. |
I also agree with all the posts here. My pup just arrived about a month ago, but when I was deciding on which breeder, the one that impressed me the most wrote:
"If you want an all white head with one blue eye and one brown eye, then I am not the breeder for you." Most breeders breed for the betterment of the breed. Health and temprement first and foremost. I did not get to "pick" my puppy. But I had so much faith in the breeder, we talk and emailed more than 50 times getting to know each other. I trusted her to pick the best puppy for me. She knew that I wanted to train this pup to become a THERAPY dog. I have the best pup in the world...(for me!!!) Her temprement is so stable and ....................she is soooooooooooooo CUTE!!!! |
The markings are the least important thing. If you are going to have him/her in long coat, alot of the intricate markings will be lost anyway.
Having said that, I don't think there was even one puppy out of the litter we chose from without an all-white head. Our first choice had tiny black streaks on his ears which might not show up at all by now. You need to be looking for the breed standard above everything else, therefore going to a good breeder is a must!! Good luck! |
I agree with all that has been said. The breeder is important. We have always entirely based our choice on the hip and eye score (to choose the litter) and the attitude of the breeder.
Then we went and picked the puppy. The first time i wanted a dog that would have a good nature and not be too boistrous (i had been bitten as a girl and since been scared of dogs. My husband thought getting a dog from a puppy and caring for it would help - it did we've just got another and i love dogs now!) |
