At our apartment we used our dining room as a box storage location--they were mostly boxes that were empty from the few things we had unpacked while waiting to move again. We were at this apartment for 2 months. On Thursday I went to pick up one of the boxes to start re-packing. I noticed it was stained on the bottom and thought, what did I spill in here (I had used that box to move groceries from the old house)...then I was like, wait a minute, it's kind of yellow... Anyways, so one of our cats is peeing in the boxes. Most of them have been empty or just with empty packing paper in it. This cat has always loved boxes--he loves to curl up in them--the smaller the better--and it's always been really cute. Do you think once we're all settled down he'll continue to pee in boxes or is this just from all the upheaval? Anyone have a cat temporarily pee on inappropriate things and then go back to normal? |

This happened to my Himalayan who is now in kitty heaven. During our 17 years being together, I moved every two years. The first few times, it caused stress to her and she peed in one of those empty boxes. She grew to accutomed to my gypsy's life later on and never did it again. Not even when I moved her with me in a 22 hours flight.
She only did it again when she started developing kidney failure. So if your cat got a clean bill from the vet. I think he is just stressed out because cats don't appreciate changes and disorder. Perhaps lay out something your cat is familiar with to be his sanctuary corner? |
i have seen this happen a lot to cats when owners are moving. yeah, I think things will be fine once you're settled in the new home; however, you may have to go back to square 1.
koko did this when she moved here with us. No pee, just would take massive turds everywhere. We had to lock her in the bathroom with the litterbox. Did this several times a day until I smelt something in the box then let her out for a little while (i kinda knew when she went which isn't much). Then we moved her to the bedroom+bathroom. Then after a few weeks, we moved it back to the original place and she was fine. |
Very normal behavior for a cat when there is a change in their routine.
When I had my townhome in NY up for sale, everytime people would come into the cats' bedroom, they would then spray their territory almost immediately after the people would leave. They hated any changes. I think they could tell that I was on edge too, with people walking through my house and the prospect of moving across the country. They can sense when you're stressed. |
Okay--I hope you're right! I hope he'll go back to being a non-peer in boxes!
We finally brought them over to our new house last night, but have to keep them in a spare bedroom until more things are put away so they won't destroy anything. They were SO happy to be there, though, and around us, since we've been living at our new house for almost a week and the cats have had their own bachelor/ette pad back at the apartment. Oh, and on Saturday morning I opened the front door of the apartment and was concentrating on Barney getting in, and one of the cats ran out. Gone all day and all night. Finally found her the next afternoon curled up on our neighbor's door step. She was DIRTY!! It looked like she had been in people's chimneys. And she was scared and hungry (even though we left food out for her at our door 10 feet away!) so I don't think she knew she was that close to home... |
Oh - poor girl. How scary! So glad you found her and she is safe! I'm sure they're all thrilled to be in the new house - and you too, huh?
Will there be pictures forthcoming?? |
When I moved my 13 year old cat started randomly peeing on bags if they were left on the floor... I'm not sure why. She stopped after a few weeks, but I left a bag on my floor in my room recently and she did it again... I have no idea why??? She also started peeing in a corner in the upstairs loft area, so I put a second litter box in teh house, and she uses both (one on each floor). However, every once in a while, she'll poop on the floor outside the upstairs litter box.... I have no idea why? The boxes are scooped out daily. I think cats are just really finicky sometimes. |
For some reason cats, especially males, like to pee on plastic. Plastic bags, plastic sheeting, etc. We have found things like that peed on in our garage. My girls don't do that, but my neighbors male likes to come into my garage and pee on things. It bugs me, but not everyone keeps track of their cats like I do...and I know it isn't always easy.
Whenever I move I keep the cats locked in the house so they can slowly learn where they live. You can't help it if one escapes though...it does happen. They are not always easy critters. |
My old roommate's male cat would always piss in corners when he was gone long. I really think cat piss is worse than a dogs. Phewwwwwwwwwwww.. |
