Do you have any BestBuy stores near you? That's where we got ours. The people there really are helpful because they're not paid on commission, so they'll give you honest information. Our bigger memory card holds about 650 pictures, and I think that's about perfect. You might not think you need that many, but when you go on a vacation, you'll change your mind!
You can even go to the website if you want to look around. Even if you don't end up going there, it will give you some start-off information. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... e=category |
I find best buy guys are very helpful as well.
However, if you want the best advice, this is what people use for anything electronic. Doesn't get too much better than this! http://cnet.com I love the canon powershots. |
I got mine at Shopko - a regional store similar to Target.
It is a Samsung Digimax S600. It was about $150, if I remember correctly. I got it last October, and I use it a lot! All the pictures I have posted here over the last year are from this camera. A friend who is a photographer is amazed at the picture quality I get from this little camera. Features listed are 6.0 megapixels, 3x optical zoom and 2.4" LCD viewing screen. It is small, portable and easy to use. The memory cards are a seperate thing and you can buy them in various sizes for not a lot of money. I upgraded to a 1GB capacity this last time and it cost $25. I am on my second card ever. I reused the 1st one so many times it was not scanning when I went to get pictures made! It is a good idea to talk to a camera dept person who can explain all the features to you. Our Walmart even has some good techie people in their photo dept who are good. Then you will understand what the features are and compare. |
I always recommend the Casio Exilim to anyone who asks me that question. It's a great camera for regular picture taking and is super thin and easy to take places. Jil and I both have one (she got hers after playing with mine!). If you wanted to do more extreme photo taking than just family and animal pics, I'd advise something completely different but for regular pics, it's great! For more serious photography I have a Canon Powershot s2 IS but now there's even better SLR ones out.
Although having a camera with lots of megapixels can be useful, again, unless you plan to blow them up poster size or do a lot of intricate digital photo editing and manipulation where losing pixels is a big deal, it's overkill. If you're taking pics just to put on the Web or to print little 4x6s, you don't need to take a picture that's 36x24. It just takes up more space on your memory card and you'll have to resize it to do anything with later. Not only that, if you aren't really computer/photo editing savvy, you'll wind up sending huge mega-attachments to people and blowing out their mailboxes. How do I know this? Because people at work do it to me every day no matter how many times I tell them. You can print an excellent photo at 300 dpi, which you can easily get with a lower setting/smaller image than the max setting. For most people, there's no reason for it. For almost anyone who has a reason to take pics that big, they already know the ins and outs of when and why to take pics at different settings! |
I second butterscotch's recommendation. I have an Exilim, and I LOVE it. I got the EX-Z60, it's what I have used for all the pics I have posted to this forum if you would like examples from the camera. My hubby bought me this camera after we did LOTS of research, as I wanted one that would fit in my pocket and could take everywhere. This little camera is excellent for everyday use. I have a larger digital that I use for more professional shots, but the Exilim gets used much more often due to its high portability. Battery life is excellent as well, and you can get lots of shoots on a 1GB card, depending on what settings you choose for image size and quality, anywhere from 250 to over 1000. I can't express how much I love my little camera! Oh, and on the price, we found it for $199 in Alaska, so you should be able to find it within your budget.....especially if you try one out in a store and then shop online... |
Thanks for asking this question, Paula! We need a new camera for our trip as the one we have (5 yrs old) is now enormous |
my dad just got himself one THEY got one at xmas and my mom keeps taking it from him. So he got at point and click I think it does have video and all, BUT what I liked about this one was it came with a dock, and battery rechargers ,the two batterys are together and the whole camera sits in the dock to recharge or you can put regular batterys in the camera if you want. I thought that was a good idea I'm always running looking for batterys and kids keep taking them. It was in Wal- mart for just over $100. on sale. I have seem them on ebay but without the dock for 60 -80 So Wal-mart minus the shipping and getting the dock not to bad |
I had an HP 850 Photosmart camera with the dock. The dock was a complete waste of money and only seemed to deplete the batteries very quickly even though it was supposed to extend the life. I ended up with the newer one the HP 945 which I LOVED!!! It died. And the 850 went missing or someone swipped it at one of our parties.
I loved my HP camera. They are cheap and have great lenses. Last year to replace my dead and missing camera. I bought a Canon Powershot S3 IS. It is a wonderful camera, but I miss the greatness of my HP. I also think the HP was easier to learn. |
