Hello from Wisconsin

Got Sheep (Dawn) informed me that I'm supposed to introduce myself. My name is Kristine, I live in SE Wisconsin, with - at the moment - six OES, not all of them mine. All of them are related to Dawn's Chewie. I have Belle & Coco, the good girls, Chewie's great-aunt & grandma, respectively. They're almost ten years old. Mad Dog, Chewie's mom, who just turned five . And three of Chewie's siblings, two of them mine, one, an aspiring terrorist, who are all going on 1 1/2 years old.

At the moment, I'm the Agility Chair for the Old English Sheepdog Club of America, and the Performance Chair for the 2007 OESCA National Specialty. My main interest in life is training my sheepdogs in agility, obedience and rally, and some times a little bit of herding.

Or at least that used to be my main preoccupation. Lately I'm so busy, half of my dogs think their name is "Stop that, Dammit!" and the other half think they're called "Come here, Whateveryournameis!"

I JUST LOVE the sheepies in your avatar!!! Love their markings. :)

Welcome to the board!
I confess I have a thing for dark markings. And a theory that all sheepdog girls with a full mask are TROUBLE :P
Kristine - Joahaeyo's dog Yuki is the one mentioned by Barbara Meyer on the oes performance list in the herding discussion!

Jo - didn't know your girl was a celebrity, did you!?

WOW! Small world!! :D

Kristine
She mentioned Yuki did herding? Hopefully it was somewhat positive since it's the one thing she picked up quickly (after she ate all the sheep poo in the ring).

Well, we love Barbara. :hearts: She's been very nice to us. I posted a video of one of her dogs herding a longggg time ago.
Yes, it was all positive. She posted some new herding video that she has on youTube and also told us to check out yours of Yuki. She hopes you get back to it :D :D
See, only good ! :D

OK, I had to go back and actually look at Yuki's video. Very nice! I'm going to have to have Belle look at it. "Look, honey, this is what a STOP looks like.

Hello and welcome to the forum! We'd like to attend the herding event this year with Foz. I think he has a natural instinct, but that's just his Mommy talking :D Agility is another thing I think he'd enjoy, but we've been focusing on manners.
Welcome Kristine! I hope you'll share pictures and videos of your agility stars. :D I just love watching it and the herding. I just wish my two were interested.
Welcome to our furry corner on the web! You have made the average number of furballs per member go up a whole bunch!

Yes, and when we and another friend came to stay for the Waukesha show, there were 4 extra people, and 3 extra sheepdogs and a basset. It was amazing!
Wow! What a friendly bunch! Thank you!

I don't know about agility stars. I do agility to maintain my sanity and theirs. It's a lot of fun.

Belle was my Novice A dog in everything and had to suffer through all of my worst mistakes. She's mostly retired now in everything but rally (though she'd love to get back to herding!). I will dust her off for the National and let her come out and play in all events. Since she's earned the right to do whatever she pleases, if you plan on being at the National and happen to be at the agility picnic, I take no responsibility if she leaves the course to swipe your brat. You've been warned.

Mad Dog was paralyzed on Dec 11. She suffered a spinal embolism (FCE) and I spent the next six months in intensive therapy teaching her how to walk again. She was my agility dog extraordinaire - not for her precision or my ability to handle her  But she's like nothing I've ever seen or ever expect to see again in this breed. Every moment I got to work with her was a privilige beyond comparison. Even now she refuses to quit. She wants no concessions and detests sympathy. And, no, she wasn't injured doing agility, but rather on maternity leave.

Her children, well, Sybil got her mother's brains, and Macy got her structure. And I love them to pieces. But neither has their mother's tremendous heart. Still, when life gets back to normal, we'll get back to training. And they will, no doubt, follow in their mother and grandmother and great-aunt's tradition of keeping me very humble

We still don't know where Chewie came from. Similar grin or not. He's much too well-behaved to be related. Stork must have taken a detour and dropped a calm and collected puppy off in that litter by mistake

The more the merrier! That was a really great weekend.

Same place, same time next year?

Sure. :D But I think the mad dog name belongs on the human, not the dog. You are one brave person!

No, Dawn. You know the relationship you develop with a dog you work with on that level. You don't think about it. You just do it

Brave <mad?> may possibly be attributed to keeping Sybil. That puppy is just not normal! In the past two weeks she's gotten into and eaten so many things with absolutely no ill effects that my vet wants her DNA tested thinking she may be part goat!

Mad Dog, honey, methinks you got some 'splaining to do

Kristine
Just to clarify, I meant the mad person in regards to having us all invade your house again. :D But, I guess you have a whole 11 months to prepare yourself!

  Oh, like that's going to bother me. Doesn't everyone have their friends bring their dogs when they visit? Frankly, no one but a dog person would want to stay with me

G'day Kristine and Crew sending Hi's from the land downunder. :D
Hiya, Lisa.

Some of us in the performance community have been lucky enough to see one of your country women in action (via video clips, sadly not in person) in agility and herding with her tailed sheepdogs. Very interesting!

Otherwise I'm pretty darn ignorant when it comes to sheepdogs down under. Well, the whole downunder really. I got the g'day part

Kristine
Ooooh who was that, probably know them. Tails are here since 2004

We have one member that excells in dog dancing with her sheepie boy, fabulous to see, have you tried that with yours?

Glad you got the G'day part  Bonza (means thumbs up)

I am going to agree with you on your theory. My girl Rags has a full mask and is BIG TROUBLE!
Welcome from Southern California 8)
Hey Kristine, glad you finally joined in over here officially! Dawn needs someone to stay up with her until the wee hours of the morning after she gets off work - she is usually in the chat room with the Alaska people since they are the only ones still awake.

Boy, did Dawn ever get lucky with that cutie pie Chewie! He is really sweet. Kristine you should be more careful with the next litter before you give another "Chewie" away.

We need pictures of your agility brood! We bug every new member until they post pictures - so I will just start demanding now! WE WANT PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Judi   !
Remember, I still have the pictures of harry in pigtails!!

Kidding aside, I am so glad you took the plunge and entered Harry!!!! :D

Welcome Kristine!

Your dogs are lovely! :)

Greetings from the (not quite yet) frozen north
Welcome from Central Florida!!! Beautiful sheepies.... 8)

Violet must have a mask under her "snow top".
How'd I miss this post? Welcome to the forum! Well, if you have Chewie's siblings, then I guess we have more cousins! Dawn and I figured out that Chewie and my Clyde share a great and great great grandparent. Being too lazy to figure out the exact relation, we proclaimed us cousins, lol! If you'll be at the specialty, we look forward to meeting you!

The only dancing I do with my OES - recall there are six - is dancing around them in the morning trying to be the first one to the refrigerator. Even then, Mad Dog usually beats me to the punch line and throws herself face-first in there in the event I may have left something exposed and vulnerable on the lower shelf.

I've seen some videos of OES doing freestyle (dancing) and it looks like a lot of fun. Has anyone else here tried it?

Well, hello cousin Clyde! Your cousin Sybil embarrassed the family mightily this weekend by behaving like a bucking bronco in public. My apologies for besmirching the family tree

Sybil is the little masked munchkin in the picture. She's a bit bigger now, but just as devilish.

You'll be at the Specialty? Fantastic! Make sure to introduce yourselves.

I'll be the frazzled one yelling: "Dawn! Where is our keg of Mojiotos?!"

Well, the mask = naughty is only a theory. Or perhaps there are some hidden masks out there

Though in my household it holds very true that the more dark on the head, the naughtier the dog. I can basically count on it. Sybil's sister Macy has a dark ear, but no eye patches and she's naturally perfect. Potty trained herself. Stopped chewing on stuff she shouldn't chew on early on. The first time I took her to conformation class I wondered why I bothered. She already knew the drill. Must have taken it upon herself to study a video or something.

Sybil is going on 18 mos old now and still can't be left out of her crate when I'm gone for more than short periods at a time. She sleeps loose with the rest of us, but only if I scan the room to make sure there is NOTHING illegal there she can chew on. Here first time in the breed ring, she had the moving part down OK if you ignored the bucking (it was a nice, cool, windy day - plenty to be sheepdog happy about). But stand still? No. I don't think so. And on the down and back, heading back to the judge she decided he looked like he needed a kiss to cheer him up, so she came flying in and gathered herself to leap up on him. Evidently she and her sister didn't watch the same video...

I think she will be put on ice for a while to grow up while I finish her sister. Some of those judges are rather mature and don't need the stuffing knocked out of them.

Hi, Stacy.

You're just south of me a bit. Which herding event are you talking about?

Is the Chicagoland sheepdog club putting on a herding instinct test again this year? Those are always a great time!

There's also Stocktober fest (allbreed herding trial, but with costume contests and other fun events - lurecoursing last year) right around Halloween in Genoa City, WI. A bunch of us try to attend. Some years there are OES entered. Hopefully this year.

Basic manners are ALWAYS a great place to start! Right, Sybil?

Hey! Where'd you go??? Get back here!!

Thanks, Judi. But I'm not planning another litter. Once was enough. Chewie is a sweetie pie. But Dawn and LeAnne have to take some (a lot? :D )of the credit for that. With Dawn's background in training and once she mentioned she had sheep, I wanted her to have the best puppy i could. I have no regrets

Now, if I had had my senses about me, I would have said to myself: "Hm, I meet this woman is showing a Rescue Basset in rally... TaDa! At last! The right home for SYBIL! :sidestep:

Actually, I have no regrets on that count either

Pictures...as soon as I figure out how that works. I've never been able to figure out how to create video clips.

Looking forward to meeting you and Harry at the specialty! There seems to be an influx of Novice A dogs this year according to the number of people who have contacted me to let me know they plan to enter.

:cheer:

Fear not. He'll be in good company. Not too sure about the curlers...Dawn, am I to understand you're a frustrated hairdresser wannebe who goes around creating avantgarde sheepdog hair designs for OES Vogue or...? Should I be worried about Chewie's 'do for the national?

Chewie should be safe!
Judi made one too many comments last spring in a post we had about pigtails and ponytails for topknots. She said that REAL boy sheepies don't wear pigtails. I maintained that keeping the hair out of Chewie's eyes was done better with pigtails. SO, her Harry miraculously apperared with pigtails in.....can't imagine how that happened.......
Greetings from San Francisco.

We entered one of our kids in a herding trial some years ago after spending more than 20 months of training and practice...

Didn't work out too well. Seems Winston was afraid of black-faced sheep for some reason and he ran for the hills.

No problem with white faces; just black faces. Go figure.

Oh, no!

Well, they are kind of intimidating to look at. Obviously he hadn't seen them before.

Herding is hard work! That's dedication. Did you at least continue on, I hope?

I can't remember what kind of sheep we usually see around here. But then most sheep look alike to me. Oh, Dawn...?

Do you need to proof for odd/unusual looking stock?

Toby's entered in Novice A but he's also entered in Conformation. Hopefully we'll be able to do both but we'll have to wait and see how the schedules line up. He's been running in the Conformation ring and doing the agility obstacles in whatever order he sees fit so who knows what kind of an ass he'll be at the National.
P.S. is there a table in Novice A?

Hi, Mandy.

We're trying to schedule it so that there is no conflict. Meaning, once we know what the entries are, that could affect our starting times. One of the dogs entered is being shown in Veterans first, and I promised his owner I would do everything in my power to make sure there is no conflict. So those of you showing dogs in sweeps and the regular conf. classes should be just fine.

As for the table, yes. Sorry. Nobody I know likes it. Well, my dogs have always enjoyed running to and jumping up onto it, sliding off of it, doing hand stands on the edge, running under it and digging holes, that kind of thing. But actually assuming a position on it while in public without major discussion can take a while to work through.

I can't make any promises - this is ENTIRELY up to the judge - but I suggest you Nov A people talk to each other ahead of time and decide which position you would prefer if given a choice (sit or down). Because last year's judge asked the Novice people what they wanted. I was running the old lady in preferred and wanted a down, but our Nov A person wanted a sit, so I deferred to her. By the time you're Belle's age, you've probably learned to do both. Maybe. So it didn't matter to me. Band together if you can.

So far I have three self-reported "will do as they please" Nov A dogs that I know of. Been there, done that. Must remember to get someone to video tape.

Just remember that this is supposed to be fun. And even though you may at some point during a run wish for the earth to open up and quietly swallow you (no need to ask me how I know this), unfortunately, the naughtier the dog, the more the audience will enjoy it. So if any of your dogs do something incredibly novel and creative, something for future OES Nov A agility dogs to aspire to, feel free to take a brief moment to bow to the crowd to take credit for your dog's trend-setting ways.

There is a special trophy for highest scoring Nov A dog. It's based on the results of the standard class only, and does require an actual qualifying score. If I'd known we were going to be blessed with so many green dogs, I would have arranged for some more interesting special awards.

HM...

Looking forward to meeting you and Toby, too. Saw your bitch at the national last year. Gorgeous!

I have them all - white faces, black faces, speckled faces, even a couple with brownish red faces! Oh, and Raindrop the llama too.
Field trip to MN???
PS - those of you who have access to old OETs can look up my description of my first ever agility trial with my Nov A dog, Belle, if you need some laughs. It was the 2001 National Specialty in Wisconsin. Probably can be found in the October issue of that year.

That was the last year they didn't have weaves in Novice standard, and since I wasn't too sure she actually knew how to weave (I'm still not convinced), I only entered that class. She went on to finish both of her novice agility titles in style just months later and her CD in three straight days of showing just weeks later. But you never would have guessed it if you saw us that day!
