Bathing a puppy

Since puppies get dirty real quick, how often is too often? We bathed Pooh the day after he came home, and again yesterday 'cause he was a little smelly. So, 2 weeks. While I don't really want to have his hair cut yet because we really want to see how long it'll get, at what point do you introduce a puppy to the groomer? I know that the one near here requires a full shot records before they will do anything, so that means another few months until meeting (rabies).

Any thougths? Also, Pooh doesn't have translucent nails...any thoughts on cutting them then?

It's hard to say how much is too much! Just keep an eye out that he doesn't develop itching, dry skin, etc. - and you should be able to judge how often he needs to be bathed. I would recommend getting him used to be brushed regularly at home (you never know what you'll have to do to maintain his coat) and bring him to the groomer whenever you can first get thim there (they'll all require shots first) - even if he doesn't need it frequently - it's good to get him familiar with going places and having it be a good experience.

I agree with Kristen, it's good to get him used to frequent brushing, it makes it easier later. I had to bath Dancer almost every week when she was a baby, till she was about 14-15 weeks old. Sky on the other hand had only had one real bath and she is 12 weeks old. Other than that I had to rinse her bum off on two occasions. It just depends on the dog I guess. Sky is a neat freak, she doesn't like to get dirty at all. Now Dancer gets a bath about once every 4-6 weeks.
I have always heard with labs that they have natural oils in their skin and they shouldn't be removed and that you shouldn't use shampoo very often. That with bathing, just use water. I am not sure if that is a fact or not, and since he is an OES too, I don't know, but just something to be aware of.
We use a dremel on our puppers nails, but they are translucent. I might would go to petsmart and let them do it. It is only $8 here to do that only. Stormi and co.
Thank you all! As far as the oils, he has OES hair, not Lab fur, so on that point, not really sure what to do! He seemed to like the bath better this time, and the hair drier is soooo funny on the cool setting (of course) pointed at his face he tries to eat the air.

Took him to Petco and the nice groomers trimmed his nails and all of the fur between his pads--my god, it looked like they had shaved another entire dog. They too can't wait to see how he looks as an adult...I told them not to rush it!

By the way, got a coupon book from petco after showing them the adoption contract----what a great gift from them! Free 8 pound bag of dog food, buy a package of greenies, get another one free (that's like $30!) Good stuff!
Awww! He is soooo cute! I must say that getting him used to brushing is a must, especially if you see him developing the OES coat! Mopsey HATED it!!! She fought me babytooth and tail for good two weeks! I mean she really freaked, ran, squirmed, yelled... She is better now, but we still need to get better at it! As far as bathing, I agree with everyone on the bathing issue: do it as needed.
one of my dogs has all except one nail black. I look at the nail, see where the indent starts, which is right after the quick, and trim just a bit in front of it. Easy as pie! :D
OK, so it's about 2 weeks since his last bath and he's a bit stinky again. I attribute this somewhat to the nasty weather we've had, but I've been making sure to wipe him down after walks with a clean towel and that has helped a bit. But the addage, "bathe a puppy when he smells like a dog" is popping into my head.

With that said, I think the monster is getting another bath this weekend. His hair is also getting kinda long, so I may trim at least the hair blocking his eyes.....
I can't wait to see how long his hair actually gets! I wonder if it will be really long like the oes or somewhere in between?
